Craving a crisp pork cutlet in Ingye-dong, I visited Gyewondang Ingye Branch (계원당 인계점).

This is a place that reinterprets the warm feeling of a 1980s Western-style Korean diner and neat home cooking in a modern way. The chicken cutlet, made with whole chicken thigh meat, was crisp outside and juicy inside, and I was also impressed that it came with egg fried rice rather than ordinary white rice. Above all, the portions were very generous, so I put the leftover chicken cutlet into a takeout container from the self-service bar myself.
A retro Western-style restaurant in Ingye-dong
Gyewondang Ingye Branch is in Ingye-dong, close to Suwon City Hall Station.

Photos of the food are displayed in front of the restaurant, so you can check what is served in advance. The menu board clearly arranged photos and prices for the chicken cutlets. Even on a first visit, choosing a menu item was not difficult.

The entrance clearly said “Beware of dog.” But when I looked down, there were four cute dog dolls huddled together instead of a scary dog. What you need to beware of is not the dog, but getting stopped in your tracks by the cuteness. I could not simply walk past them and looked at them for quite a while, haha.
Hours are 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily. Last orders are at 8:30 PM, which is useful to keep in mind if you are visiting late.
How does parking work at Gyewondang Ingye Branch?
The building’s underground parking garage is free to use. If there is no space underground, the restaurant says it can direct you to park in front of the store. According to the restaurant, roadside parking is also available during lunch hours, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. During lunch, roadside parking may be more convenient than the underground garage. We visited at lunchtime and parked on a street near the restaurant.
Easy ordering at the kiosk

We ordered using the kiosk installed in the restaurant. That day, we ordered the Gyewon Set Meal and Gyewon Chicken Cutlet. The Gyewon Set Meal was ₩17,500, and the Gyewon Chicken Cutlet was ₩12,500.
Unlimited drinks and coffee for ₩900

One side of the restaurant has an area for soft drinks and coffee.

Add ₩900 when ordering a meal and you can enjoy unlimited soft drinks and coffee. I liked being able to drink plenty while eating the chicken cutlet. Cups and other necessities were neatly gathered in one place, making them easy to use. You can have soft drinks with your meal and coffee after it, taking care of dessert in the same spot.
A self-service bar with side dishes and takeout containers
The self-service bar has several side dishes that go well with chicken cutlet. You can take only as much as you need. Takeout containers for leftovers are also available at the bar. Pack any leftovers yourself in a container.
Events and dining information checked before ordering

The restaurant monitor explained how to join the review event and the benefits offered at each stage.

It also showed Gyewondang’s own tips for enjoying chicken cutlet crisp to the last bite.

The screen also explained how to use the restaurant, including the basic side dishes, forks and knives, and packing leftovers.

The screen showed Gyewondang’s generous menu spreads too, building anticipation before the food arrived.
A comfortable, warm dining room
The interior is warmly decorated with wooden tables and chairs. The tables did not feel overly cramped, so it looked suitable for a family meal or a date in Ingye-dong. At first I thought they were cute lucky charms, but they turned out to be wet wipes. With phrases such as “Everything will be okay” and “Health charm,” they showed Gyewondang’s cheerful sense of humor—clean your hands and lift your mood at the same time. Customers kept coming in at lunchtime, but the overall atmosphere remained relaxed.
A generously set chicken-cutlet meal

When our food arrived, the first thing I noticed was the generous amount. Large chicken cutlets, egg fried rice, cabbage salad, soup, and side dishes filled the table. The chicken cutlet was generously topped with Western-style diner sauce. The plate was so full that it looked satisfying before I even started eating.

Small flags with the menu names were placed in the food. It was nice to be able to distinguish the types of chicken cutlet easily.

The Gyewon Set Meal lets you taste Gyewon Chicken Cutlet and fried chicken cutlet together on one plate.

I could alternate between chicken cutlet with smooth sauce and chicken cutlet that preserved the crispness of the fried coating.

When we placed the food ordered for two people together, it was a considerable amount. It seemed filling enough even for someone with a large appetite. The big chicken cutlets and their lively, crisp coating looked delicious.
Crisp outside, juicy whole chicken thigh inside
Gyewon Chicken Cutlet comes generously covered in Western-style diner sauce. The sauce softly coats the chicken cutlet, while a crisp texture remains around the edges.

With the fried chicken cutlet, you can taste the crisp fried coating first, then add sauce separately.

Gyewon Chicken Cutlet uses 100% whole chicken thigh meat. Unlike a typical pork cutlet, the meat inside was tender and juicy. When I cut it with a fork and knife, I could really feel the crispness of the coating. The chicken thigh was thick, so the texture of the meat came through well. The coating and meat went together nicely.
The miso soup served alongside was savory, light, and not salty. A warm spoonful between bites of crisp chicken cutlet helped clear away the richness. The mild chicken thigh and sauce were also a good match. You can see the thickness of the whole chicken thigh inside in the cross-section. It was not a thin patty, so you could properly enjoy chewing the meat. I could clearly taste Gyewondang chicken cutlet’s characteristic crisp-outside, juicy-inside texture.
Egg fried rice instead of white rice
One especially distinctive thing at Gyewondang was the rice served with the chicken cutlet. Most cutlet restaurants serve ordinary white rice. At Gyewondang, you get egg fried rice with egg and vegetables. The fried rice was nutty and tasty on its own, and it also went well with the chicken-cutlet sauce. Eating egg fried rice between pieces of chicken cutlet kept the meal from becoming repetitive.

When I cut into the thick chicken cutlet, the meat inside was cooked juicy. I enjoyed taking a bite with both the crisp coating and tender chicken thigh.
Seasoned pepper leaves that cut through the richness
If you keep eating chicken cutlet, the richness of fried food can start to build up. The side dish that went especially well at that point was seasoned pepper leaves.

There was also crunchy seasoned bean sprouts, which were good for refreshing the palate now and then.

I tried placing the seasoned pepper leaves directly on the chicken cutlet. Their spicy, salty flavor cut through the richness of the cutlet. The combination of seasoned pepper leaves and chicken cutlet worked far better than I expected.

Pairing seasoned pepper leaves with sauce-topped chicken cutlet gives you smooth and spicy flavors together. If rich food is difficult for you to eat in large amounts, it would be nice to add some seasoned pepper leaves on top.
Pack leftovers yourself
The portions were so generous that we could not finish everything.

The self-service bar has containers for leftovers. Rather than asking a staff member to pack food, you simply take the container you need and put your leftovers in it. I neatly packed the remaining chicken cutlet in a container myself and brought it home. Since the portion is generous from the start, you do not need to force yourself to finish it all. Use the containers at the self-service bar to pack up leftovers comfortably.
An Ingye-dong restaurant busy at lunchtime

Customers kept coming into the restaurant while we ate. It looked like a good place for office workers seeking a filling lunch near Suwon City Hall Station, or for people looking for a date restaurant in Ingye-dong.

After eating, you place your used dishes and tray on the return shelf yourself. From using the side dishes to packing leftovers and returning dishes, the system is self-service and easy to follow.
Retro charm throughout the restaurant
Various retro-style objects are displayed near the entrance. The self-service dish-return area was neatly organized too. Brick décor and an old wall clock added the feeling of a modern reinterpretation of an old-fashioned Western-style Korean diner. You can find Gyewondang’s retro sensibility not only in the food, but throughout the restaurant.
Gyewondang Ingye Branch visit recap
Gyewondang Ingye Branch was an excellent Ingye-dong spot for chicken cutlet made with 100% whole chicken thigh meat. The donut-shaped Gyewon Chicken Cutlet had plenty of crisp fried sections, while the chicken thigh inside stayed juicy. The egg fried rice served instead of ordinary white rice was also special. When things felt rich, adding seasoned pepper leaves on top of the chicken cutlet was spicy and worked very well. I also liked that ₩900 gives you unlimited soft drinks and coffee. If you want generous chicken cutlet, egg fried rice, and a retro Western-style diner atmosphere near Suwon City Hall Station, Gyewondang Ingye Branch is worth a visit.
