Suwon Korean restaurant for smoky spicy octopus and makgeolli: Daseon

In short

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. After installing a ceiling fan all day, I paired ₩35,000 smoky spicy octopus stir-fry and ₩15,000 boiled pork with makgeolli, plus refillable barley rice. Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a satisfying pick for both dinner and drinks.

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, a Suwon Station favorite that stayed on my mind because the kal-nakji (knife-cut noodles with octopus) I had a few months ago was so much better than expected! Last time, I came for a hearty meal.

This was the day I completely wore myself out installing a ceiling fan by hand all day ㅜㅜ

I need alcohol,,

Once I finally managed to finish the installation, it felt a shame to go straight home, and I was desperately craving a glass of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) with something spicy,, 🥹 Then I remembered how much I enjoyed Daseon Kalguksu last time, so I came back—this time for a drink! ❗️

The kal-nakji I had on my first visit surprised me from the first bite, and the spicy octopus stir-fry I ordered this time also exceeded expectations. Another properly satisfying day..❣️ I returned to the same place, but with a different menu and purpose, so it had a different charm from last time 〰️

A relaxed setting for a meal with makgeolli

Rather than looking flashy or overly decorated, the interior has the warm, familiar feel of a Korean restaurant where you can comfortably enjoy a meal.

I had used up nearly all my energy installing that ceiling fan, so I had a glass of makgeolli as soon as I sat down 😎

Happiness recharged^,, haha. Last time I came for a proper meal, but this time it felt like I had come to unwind with a drink after a long day, so the very same space felt a little different.

It is lovely for a meal near Suwon Station, but it also suits a day when you want makgeolli with Korean food to snack on 👏

Ordering spicy octopus stir-fry and sliced boiled pork

Since I had tried Daseon Kalguksu's signature kal-nakji on my last visit, I decided to choose dishes I had not tried this time ✅

Daseon Kalguksu menu and prices

I ordered spicy octopus stir-fry for ₩35,000, sliced boiled pork for ₩15,000, and makgeolli! I had enjoyed the sliced boiled pork last time too, so I ordered it again.

I thought the spicy, intensely smoky octopus stir-fry and mild boiled pork would make just the right combination.

How I ate the free-refill barley rice

Once you order, barley rice, shredded radish, and kimchi are served as the basics.

At first, it is nice to lightly mix the barley rice with just the shredded radish~ But once the spicy octopus stir-fry arrives, mixing in a little of its sauce is another special treat 🥹👏❗️

The kind of person who cries when food is delicious,,

With the pleasantly chewy barley rice and spicy sauce together, I just kept reaching for another spoonful.

What is more, the barley rice comes with free refills! It would have been such a waste to leave the spicy octopus sauce behind, so I got another bowl of barley rice and mixed it all up. A perfect finish ෆ

Spicy octopus stir-fry with the flavor of a high-heat wok

The star of the day: spicy octopus stir-fry.

Looking toward the kitchen, I could see an auntie tossing it in a wok over high heat 🔥 Maybe that was why the smoky flavor burst through from the very first bite!

Spicy octopus stir-fry with a high-heat smoky flavor

It did not simply taste like octopus coated in spicy sauce. The savory smoky flavor and umami from a quick, high-heat stir-fry were truly there.

With dishes like this, the sauce can sometimes be overly sweet or taste strongly of artificial seasoning, and you get tired of it after just a few bites. Daseon Kalguksu's spicy octopus stir-fry barely had that feeling at all 🤔

It was definitely spicy and smoky, but the sauce was not excessively sweet; it had the natural, familiar flavor of something seasoned and stir-fried at home 📍

Spicy octopus stir-fry with sauce that is not overly sweet

This is exactly what “comforting like home cooking” feels like. It was not bland or plain—the smoky flavor and umami were clear—but the seasoning did not taste artificial, so I could keep eating it without feeling weighed down. And honestly, makgeolli goes down so easily with this..ෆ

Octopus as plump as octopus tentacles

What impressed me most about the spicy octopus stir-fry was the size of the octopus 🐙

Spicy octopus stir-fry with plump octopus pieces

When you order spicy octopus stir-fry, sometimes the octopus is thinner or smaller than expected, so the sauce is strong but the octopus itself barely makes an impression.

Here, the octopus was seriously so plump 🔥 It was thick enough to make me wonder whether I was eating octopus tentacles, and every bite had such a bouncy texture.

Even though it was thick, it was not tough. The spicy sauce clung well and the smoky flavor came through, so it was delicious even when I picked out just the octopus. I initially ordered it as a makgeolli snack, but after mixing the sauce into the barley rice, it seemed filling enough for a full meal too ✨ It is a dish that does not miss either drinks or dinner.

Sliced boiled pork to balance the spice

I ordered the sliced boiled pork again—it was delicious last time too!

Sliced boiled pork paired with spicy octopus stir-fry

Having mild boiled pork between bites of the smoky, spicy octopus stir-fry made for such a great balance! The pork was moist and tender, so it was good on its own; with kimchi or a little salted shrimp, its savory flavor was,, beyond words,, 💓

When my mouth got a little spicy from the octopus stir-fry, one piece of pork.. ahh, and the makgeolli disappeared in no time ^^*..

Spicy octopus stir-fry, boiled pork, and makgeolli combination

Alternating bites of spicy octopus stir-fry, sliced boiled pork, and makgeolli made it feel as though the fatigue built up from installing the ceiling fan all day was finally melting away, haha.

A return visit satisfying for both a meal and makgeolli snacks

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch near Suwon Station stayed in my memory because the kal-nakji was so good last time. This time, I tried the spicy octopus stir-fry for the first time, and I was happy with the stir-fried dish after the kal-nakji too, which made this return visit even more satisfying.

Because “kalguksu” is in the name, I expected it to be a place focused on noodle dishes, but after trying the spicy octopus stir-fry, I can say they really know their stir-fries too..! 💯 Above all, the plump, octopus-like pieces and deep smoky flavor from the high-heat wok were impressive. The sauce was neither overly sweet nor artificial, so it stayed enjoyable to the last bite.

Last time I enjoyed it as a hearty meal; this time, as makgeolli food. The reasons for visiting were different, but I was happy both times! If you are near Suwon Station and craving spicy octopus stir-fry with plump octopus, or Korean food that goes well with makgeolli, I recommend the spicy octopus stir-fry at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch ◡̈ Next time, I would like to try another dish I have not had yet.
