Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is a Korean snack bar in Jung-gu, Seoul, near Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station. Its 25,000 won combo pairs chewy wheat-rice cakes with gimbap, sundae, liver, and fried snacks. A satisfying mild tteokbokki spread, though the fish-cake broth could be saltier.

It has been sooo, sooo, SO long since I went on a Korean-snack outing. This place kept popping up as a Cheonggyecheon favorite, so I was curious—and fiiinally made it here.

Quick Korean snacks near Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station
I visited Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch (현선이네 청계즉석점) while looking for somewhere quick to eat near Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station. It is a good nearby option when you have plans around Euljiro 1(il)-ga, need a lunch spot as an office worker, or want a light dinner after work. It also seemed perfect for those sudden moments when you are out running errands nearby, get hungry, and desperately want tteokbokki. That was me.
(This is a review of the Cheonggye Instant Branch.) If you are looking for chewy wheat-rice cakes plus a sweet-and-spicy sauce, this is the spot!

First of all, that sign gets the heart racing. It is way too cute.
The shop did not feel overly formal, which I liked—it was somewhere you could just walk into and eat comfortably. It did not feel awkward to chat while eating tteokbokki, either; it had an easy, friend-friendly vibe.
There are so many kinds of tteokbokki these days, with loads of options depending on your taste, but I think the one I crave most often is still tteokbokki that sticks to the basics. There were lots of reviews, and when I arrived I thought there was a line—but nope, it was the kiosk lol.

Check for a table before ordering at the kiosk
Unusual! You have to order at the kiosk out front before going inside ‼️‼️ Still, please make sure there is a table before you place your order!

Cute.

I was wondering what to get, then went for the classic set. But every single table—the one beside me, the one in front, even the one by the kitchen—was having instant tteokbokki, so I did regret it a little. (And I overheard that the spicy instant tteokbokki is doggone hot,,)
So the staff member asked whether I would be okay with it, or whether I would prefer medium spice with the sauce served separately. . . . I was like, ah ㅠ just how spicy is it lol. I am such a spice weakling that I ordered even regular tteokbokki mild, so just hearing that made my mouth feel hot ㅠㅠ

A ₩25,000 combo set with mild wheat-rice cakes
This is the combo set (₩25,000). The wheat-rice cakes had that properly chewy texture, and the sauce had soaked in well, so the first bite was good. Next time I want to challenge myself with medium spice!! It had a lovely balance of sweet and spicy, the kind of flavor that keeps you reaching back in.

I considered rice balls, but I am going with the classic gimbap-tteokbokki-sundae lineup.
Beyond tteokbokki, there were plenty of Korean snack dishes such as sundae (Korean blood sausage), fried snacks, gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and fish cakes, so it was great for enjoying several things at once! If choosing is difficult, there are also sets with multiple items, a nice option for anyone who wants to try a bit of everything.
With the tteokbokki as the star, of course,, add gimbap. Add sundae. Add liver. I still cannot get used to places not giving you makjang dipping sauce. They give you salt,, 🧂

My heart is pounding over this three-item combo lol. The sweetness of the wheat-rice cakes made me happy. Mild spice, as expected 👍 I absolutely hate mild Jin Ramen, but for everything else I am level-zero spice; I do not casually take on even the mild option at Yupdduk either lol.

I think the fish cakes would have been better a little saltier. The broth,, if it had just been a touch saltier ㅠ it would have scored 50,000 points, but I will call it a healthy flavor!

So I just put them into the tteokbokki and ate them that way 🔥

A small but roomy interior
The fried snacks were delicious, the sundae was nicely springy, and altogether it was a very satisfying set 👍 There are branches in several places besides Euljiro, so I should try collecting them all lol.
The interior felt roomier than I expected from the outside. They used the space all the way to the kitchen really well, and I think there were around eight or nine tables. The space itself was compact, but it had the warm, familiar atmosphere characteristic of an old neighborhood shop, which I loved.
The basic side dish, danmuji (pickled yellow radish), is self-service ‼️ Being able to take as much as you need was a pass, too. As befits globally loved K-food, there were international customers, and the staff member was also from abroad—lovely to see! 🤤
