In short

Sinseong Agujjim is a steamed monkfish restaurant across from Korea Hospital near Asan Terminal in Asan, Chungnam. We had the small level 4 steamed monkfish, loaded with monkfish and bean sprouts, then finished with savory fried rice. For spicy steamed monkfish, level 4 or higher is our pick!

Introduction to Sinseong Agujjim near Asan Terminal

Today, I’m introducing Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch (신성아구찜 아산점), a great steamed monkfish spot near Asan Terminal! I think many people immediately think of Sinseong Agujjim when they think of steamed monkfish around Asan Terminal.

We’d visited a few times before, and regulars keep coming back every time we go. Once we fell for the flavor of the steamed monkfish sauce here, it became one of those places that often comes to mind whenever we crave it!

We especially like spicy food, so we order level 4. This time, it felt a little hotter than before! Still, it was just right for us, since we love that spicy kick.

And Sinseong Agujjim has the most generous portions of steamed monkfish in Asan! There’s plenty of monkfish meat, so even two people can leave feeling quite full. Let me show you the steamed monkfish we had this time in detail.

Sinseong Agujjim menu and spice selection

Sinseong Agujjim steamed monkfish menu

Sinseong Agujjim has several menu items including steamed monkfish, but we’ve only ever ordered the steamed monkfish when we come here. They also always run an event that gives you an extra portion when you order steamed monkfish!

Order two portions and they add one more; order three portions and they add one more. So even if two people order just two portions, you can actually enjoy a generous amount equivalent to about three portions. It’s a pretty great place for steamed monkfish lovers because the serving is so generous, too.

You can also choose a spice level from 1 through 5 to suit your taste.

Steamed monkfish spice level options

The basic side dishes include salad, baekkimchi (white kimchi), and pickled vegetables.

The sides are mostly nice and crunchy, which makes them great alongside the spicy steamed monkfish.

Warm seaweed soup served with steamed monkfish

Warm miyeokguk (seaweed soup) also comes as a basic side. It’s nice to have a few spoonfuls before the steamed monkfish arrives.

What does the small level 4 steamed monkfish taste like?

Small level 4 steamed monkfish order

This time, we ordered the small steamed monkfish and chose level 4. It comes with monkfish, bean sprouts, and mideodeok (sea squirt).

Steamed monkfish with monkfish and bean sprouts

There are lots of bean sprouts here, but the amount of monkfish is truly impressive!

At other places, you often find yourself continuously picking at only the bean sprouts while eating steamed monkfish. Here, though, the bean sprouts disappear before we even finish the monkfish! The meat is easy to pick off the bones, and while this isn’t boneless steamed monkfish, the pieces of meat are large, so there’s plenty to eat~

Dip it into the soy sauce and wasabi, and it’s savory with a sharp little kick.

Have it with the bean sprouts, and the crunch makes it a perfect combination!

Personally, I think the sauce is incredibly important when it comes to steamed monkfish.

The sauce here isn’t aggressively spicy in a harsh, heavy way. It has plenty of savory depth and a clean spicy finish.

So rather than being overwhelmingly intense, it’s closer to that familiar, delicious steamed monkfish flavor that adults would enjoy~

Level 4 spicy steamed monkfish

We always get level 4 whenever we come, and this time it was much spicier. I actually found this version much, much tastier.

Monkfish meat infused with spicy sauce

The spicy sauce had really soaked into the monkfish meat, making it the kind of flavor that gets your appetite going more with every bite. If you love spicy steamed monkfish, I recommend level 4 or higher!

Is the fried rice at the end a must?

Fried rice ordered after steamed monkfish

We ordered fried rice at the end, too! They set aside some of the steamed monkfish sauce and fry it separately, so you can order it midway through the meal or from the start.

We ordered one portion, and it was quite a lot. It was deliciously fried with a nutty flavor! The fried rice at the end isn’t optional—it’s a must, so definitely try it.
