Geomdan tonkatsu restaurant, Saturday katsu curry set: HOKATSU

In short

HOKATSU is a Japanese tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant on Seogot-ro in Geomdan, Incheon. Arriving on a Saturday at 2pm with no wait, the writer ordered Simsim Katsu (tenderloin + pork loin) at 15,000 won, the Choieh Katsu curry set (tenderloin + cheese) at 19,000 won and potato croquettes, all breaded and fried to order in about 15 minutes. Jasmine tea and a natural honey yogurt starter show the same attention to detail, making HOKATSU a place worth returning to.

I was craving Japanese-style tonkatsu (pork cutlet) after a while, so I went to HOKATSU, my Geomdan go-to. From the cutlets to the curry, everything was seriously delicious… I really recommend this place.

Saturday 2pm at HOKATSU: wait time and seating

I visited HOKATSU at 2pm on a Saturday and got seated right away! (But after that, customers kept streaming in, and even during the late lunch hour the seats were nearly full — proof it's a real local favorite.) There's a good mix of 4-person and 2-person tables, so it's great for solo dining as well as coming with friends or family 😊

They have high chairs and disposable aprons too.

You can help yourself to extra side dishes. White kimchi, pickled gochujang peppers, pickles, and cabbage salad! I love cabbage salad, so this was a lucky find for me haha

HOKATSU menu and what we ordered

So many different katsu options~

  • ✔️ Simsim Katsu ₩15,000 (tenderloin + pork loin)
  • ✔️ Choieh Katsu + curry set ₩19,000 (tenderloin + cheese)
  • ✔️ Potato croquettes (2) ₩4,000
  • ✔️ Rice ₩1,000

This is what the two of us ordered~ ⚠️ Because they only bread the cutlets once the order comes in, it takes about 15 minutes to be served! Proof that everything's fried fresh to order 🙌

Jasmine tea served at HOKATSU

Jasmine tea and the natural honey yogurt starter

Even the water here is different 😮 They serve jasmine tea that's fragrant and clean, perfect for freshening up your palate before and after the meal 🍵

House-made yogurt starter with natural honey

And on top of that, a natural honey yogurt starter! Mix the house-made yogurt with the honey and it's not too tart, with a mellow nutty note — the perfect appetizer to build up your appetite. Seemed like a great spot to bring kids too 👶

The table came out fully loaded~ (already want to eat it again..)

Choieh Katsu served with the curry set
Choieh Katsu made of tenderloin and cheese cutlet

How does Choieh Katsu (tenderloin + cheese cutlet) taste?

Starting with the Choieh Katsu (tenderloin + cheese cutlet)! The moment I saw the cheese, I gasped 😳 Fresh cheddar and mozzarella stretched way out, and combined with the crispy, non-greasy coating, it was seriously insane.

You have to dip the cheese cutlet in salt only! Just salt alone lets you taste the flavor of the cheese and meat exactly as they are — so good.

Dipping the cheese cutlet into salt

Salt before the tonkatsu sauce — that's the proper order 🧂

The tenderloin cutlet is best with fresh wasabi + salt! The tenderloin looks moist and tender just to look at, and topping it with a little fresh wasabi and a dab of salt makes it feel like eating at a top-tier omakase tonkatsu place. The juices from the meat itself just burst out..

I basically turned into a monkey who just ate a banana, haha. You've got to try this level of detail for yourself!

Simsim Katsu made of tenderloin and pork loin cutlet

Simsim Katsu (tenderloin + pork loin cutlet): was it worth 15,000 won?

Next up, the Simsim Katsu (tenderloin + pork loin cutlet). The pork loin cutlet has its own different charm — it has more bite than the tenderloin, so try it with wasabi + salt first too! The more you chew, the more the loin's savory juices come through, and dipping it in tonkatsu sauce gives it a whole other flavor!! You can really tell the meat quality is on a different level 😋

Potato croquettes at HOKATSU

Potato croquettes and the curry set at HOKATSU

The sides are seriously well made too! The potato croquettes are crispy outside, soft inside, sweet and tender — just as good as the mains. Two for ₩4,000 is a great deal too!

The curry is packed with meat, and piled on top of rice it's total comfort food 🍛 I highly recommend getting the curry set!!

We ate every last bite.. I'd definitely go back 🙋‍♀️
