Incheon tonkatsu restaurant with a self-bar, weekday dinner: HOKATSU

In short

HOKATSU is a handmade tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet) restaurant in Dangha-dong, Geomdan, Incheon, a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Dokjeong Station on Incheon Line 2. On a weekday evening visit, the Signature 3-Cutlet Set (18,000 won) brought two pieces each of pork loin, tenderloin, and cheese katsu, alongside HOKATSU's yogurt-aging fridge, a pre-meal yogurt, and a self-bar with salad and side dishes. The stretchy cheese katsu and the deep, rich miso soup are what stay with you longest.

There's a Blue Ribbon-awarded tonkatsu place in Geomdan?! I had to go check it out. < Recommended tonkatsu in Dangha-dong, Incheon > HOKATSU

HOKATSU is located near the Megabox by Dokjeong Station. I've only ever come here for the movies, never for a meal — turns out there's a handmade tonkatsu restaurant, HOKATSU, that's been holding down this exact spot for over 10 years!

On top of that, it's a Blue Ribbon restaurant~~ but once I ate there, I got why.

Yogurt dry-aging you can see in the dining room

Inside the fridge showing pork meat currently aging

That's because HOKATSU apparently uses Korea's first dry-aging method with handmade yogurt!! I'd never heard of aging with yogurt before, so it was pretty fascinating — there's literally an aging fridge sitting in one corner of the store, and the kitchen staff pull meat out of it whenever they need it. Being able to watch the aging process right there in the shop made me trust the place even more, and it was just cool haha.

What HOKATSU feels like on a weekday evening

If you already know Geomam-area restaurants, you probably know HOKATSU — plenty of well-known people have eaten here too. When I visited on a weekday evening, the place was already full of people mid-meal.

The inside was bigger than it looks from outside. Lots of solo diners, families, and groups of friends eating together. Apparently there's even a wait on weekends!

They also have baby chairs, so families with young kids can come eat comfortably.

HOKATSU's self-bar with salad and side dishes

There's a self-bar too, so if you run out of salad or side dishes mid-meal you can just go grab more, and every table has salad dressing, tonkatsu sauce, and perilla oil already set out!

What makes HOKATSU good #1 — brewed tea instead of plain water

The water isn't just plain bottled water — it's brewed tea! It had a savory, subtle flavor that I really liked, and personally, I love when restaurants serve tea like this instead of plain water.

What makes HOKATSU good #2 — a yogurt starter before the meal

As a starter, HOKATSU serves the same handmade yogurt actually used to age the tonkatsu. There's honey underneath, and they told me to stir it well before eating.

HOKATSU's handmade pre-meal yogurt with honey underneath

I love dairy — milk, cheese, yogurt, all of it — so a pre-meal yogurt was already a total win for me lol. And it was way tastier than expected! It tasted like a regular plain yogurt, but mixed with the honey underneath it turned just slightly sweet, which was perfect for whetting my appetite before the meal.

We ordered the #1 best-seller, the Signature 3-Cutlet Set!! Honestly, part of why I picked it was because I was curious about that yellow cheese katsu lol.

They also run a bunch of in-store events — review events, KakaoTalk channel-friend events, and more — so it's worth joining in to get a little extra.

How do the pork loin and tenderloin cutlets taste?

Signature 3-Cutlet Set: ₩18,000. This is an assorted platter with 2 pieces each of pork loin, tenderloin, and cheese katsu! Since you get to try all three types at once, it's great for first-time visitors!

I started with the pork loin katsu. It included some of the fatty portion, and they recommended drizzling perilla oil over it. I did as told, and the moment I poured it on, this nutty aroma rose off the cutlet~~ the crispy coating combined with the nutty perilla oil scent made the meat taste both tender and full of that distinct loin chewiness — so good.

The tenderloin katsu was so tender that just a light press released a rush of juices! I usually prefer loin over tenderloin, but here I could've eaten the tenderloin alone — it was that tender, with just the right amount of chew too. Genuinely delicious cutlet.

Mozzarella and cheddar cheese katsu: half cheese, half pork

And then the one I was most excited for — the cheese katsu!! HOKATSU's cheese katsu is made with mozzarella and cheddar cheese together, giving it that signature yellow center. I'd never seen a cheese katsu look like this before, so I was hyped even before taking a bite.

There was so much cheese packed in that the moment I bit into it, cheese stretched and dripped everywhere!! The visuals alone screamed real cheese katsu lol.

Stretchy mozzarella-cheddar cheese katsu

Unlike cheese katsu made with just mozzarella, the addition of cheddar gave this one a richer, more savory cheese flavor. It was packed with so much cheese you could call it half cheese, half meat — cheese lovers would seriously love this!

The complimentary miso soup served with the meal

Even the standard miso soup comes out rich

And even though it's a tonkatsu place, the complimentary miso soup was surprisingly great too! Miso soup is usually pretty light-tasting, but here the broth was richer and more savory than I expected. Taking a sip between bites of tonkatsu cut through the greasiness, and honestly I kept reaching for it again and again haha.

Final verdict: is HOKATSU worth it near Dokjeong Station?

From the special yogurt-based aging method to the delicious loin, tenderloin, and cheese katsu — HOKATSU delivered on all fronts! If you're hunting for good restaurants in Incheon, in Geomdan, or specifically for tonkatsu in Dangha-dong, this place is worth a visit haha. Next time I'll be back to try something else off the menu!
