When you want cockles and yukjeon together in Gijang

I was out in the Gijang area and wanted a proper, filling meal, so I stopped by Kkomak Hansang Gijang Main Branch. Plenty of places serve cockles simply as bibimbap, but here I could have them as a full set with yukjeon and side dishes, which made the meal feel quite substantial. It seemed like a good place to remember for a day when you want cockles and yukjeon together, with the feel of a Korean set meal at one of the best restaurants in Busan.

I ordered the cockle bibimbap and yukjeon set for two, listed on the menu at ₩24,000 per person. It was a great set to choose when I wanted both cockle bibimbap and yukjeon.

Window seats and generously sized tables

From my seat by the window, I had a refreshing view outside. The spacing between seats did not feel cramped, and the light wood-toned tables and tidy interior created a comfortable atmosphere. I had expanded my route from Songjeong in Busan out toward Gijang while looking for a good place for a meal, and it was nice to sit down and eat at an unhurried pace.

There were plenty of tables farther inside as well as by the windows. Since this menu arrives on several plates, space on the table matters, but even with small plates and side dishes laid out, it never felt tight. Even after ordering a full set, the flow of the meal did not feel complicated, and it was an easy atmosphere for eating slowly while chatting.

The whole set arrived at once, starting with the side dishes. Seasoned cockles, rice to mix into cockle bibimbap, yukjeon (Korean egg-battered beef pancake), ssam vegetables, soup, and several accompaniments filled the table so thoroughly that there was hardly any empty space even for two people. At first there were so many bowls that I wondered where to start, but once I mixed the cockles into the rice and paired them with the yukjeon, it all came together naturally. Rather than ending with one bowl of bibimbap, I could alternate between the side dishes and yukjeon, so the two of us could each make the combinations we wanted as we ate.

Mixing seasoned cockles into rice

I started by adding the seasoned cockles to the rice and mixing them in. The sauce had a sweet-spicy coating, while the cockles retained their characteristic chewiness; the more I mixed in vegetables, the fresher each bite became. The seasoning was not overly heavy, so I kept mixing more rice, and there was a pleasing amount of cockles too.

Perilla-leaf wraps with bibimbap

The combination of rice and cockles on a perilla leaf also worked really well. The fragrant leaf balanced the savory depth of the seasoned cockles, and the rice made each bite much more filling. Instead of mixing all the cockles and rice together from the beginning, I portioned out small amounts, which made it easier to adjust the strength of the sauce and the ratio of vegetables. If spicy food feels like a lot, it is better to add the ssam vegetables; if you want to taste the cockle seasoning as it is, mixing it straight into the rice works better. Even within the same set, the impression of the flavors changed depending on how I ate it.

Tender yukjeon to follow the cockles

The yukjeon came with thin slices of beef in a soft egg coating. Topped with scallion salad, it gained a pleasantly sharp aroma and offered a different flavor from the cockle bibimbap. The yukjeon had enough presence that it did not feel like a supporting player in the cockle set, and it was especially good after the spicy cockles.

The yukjeon was divided into pieces that were easy to pick up one by one, and the thin egg coating kept the texture from feeling heavy. When the seasoned flavor of the cockle bibimbap lingered in my mouth, eating the yukjeon with the scallion salad let the nutty flavor and aroma continue naturally. I was glad I had chosen this set because I wanted to enjoy the yukjeon as much as the cockles.

A variety of accompanying side dishes, too

There was also a varied selection of side dishes, so I kept reaching for them between bites. Soy-sauce-based cockles, dressed vegetables, and dishes such as eggplant changed up the textures and kept the full set from becoming monotonous. I could add extra side dishes or make wraps to suit my taste, which was fun too.

If you are with a friend who loves cockles, you may end up debating whether to have only cockle bibimbap or add yukjeon too, but this menu solves both at once, which I liked.
