I'd seen the Bulnaneun Jjukkumi sign every time I went to a restaurant nearby, and it was always full of customers. I kept thinking I should try it next time I wanted jjukkumi, and this time I finally went for lunch.

Bulnaneun Jjukkumi has jjukkumi stir-fry as its base with various set menus. You can order the jjukkumi stir-fry alone, or at lunch there's a set that comes with pot rice and shrimp tempura.

There's also a perilla seed noodle soup set, pot rice sets, and jjukkumi with pork belly, plus sides like seafood pancake, whole fried squid, king shrimp tempura, jjukkumi shabu, boiled jjukkumi, and even pork cutlet — quite the variety.

Since we came for lunch, we ordered the jjukkumi stir-fry + pot rice + shrimp tempura set (₩17,000) at the less-spicy level, for two. By the way, you can choose the spice level of the jjukkumi stir-fry — there are four options: mild, less spicy, original, and spicy!

Eating the 17,000-won jjukkumi lunch set at the less-spicy level

Basic side dishes including radish salad, bean sprouts, and lettuce

The basic side dishes were radish salad and bean sprouts and lettuce that go well mixed into the jjukkumi bibimbap, along with cabbage salad and cold seaweed-cucumber soup.

You can freely grab more side dishes from the self-serve bar if you run out.

Finally, the jjukkumi stir-fry and pot rice arrived.

Two-person portion of jjukkumi stir-fry on one plate
Freshly cooked pot rice with the lid opened

The jjukkumi comes as a two-person portion on one plate, and it looked so plump and springy just from looking at it, really appetizing.

Opening the lid of the pot rice, the freshly cooked rice was glistening with sheen.

First, scoop out the pot rice into a bowl and pour water into the pot!

Plate of large king shrimp tempura

The shrimp tempura size, though, haha — the shrimp tempura was genuinely huge, and the batter looked crispy just by looking at it.

Jjukkumi bibimbap mixed with jjukkumi and vegetables

First I loaded the rice up with plenty of jjukkumi, bean sprouts, radish salad, and lettuce, and mixed it all together enthusiastically.

True to being flame-grilled, the jjukkumi had a lot of that fire aroma. But it wasn't artificial-tasting at all — just the right, natural smoky flavor 🔥. The texture was springy and satisfying to chew.

It wasn't too spicy, just the right level, and the sauce had strong, addictive umami — the bibimbap disappeared in no time, haha.

The shrimp tempura was still steaming from being freshly fried. Crispy outside, tender inside — the real deal, T_T.

Cross-section of a plump, packed shrimp tempura

The shrimp tempura alone was filling enough — packed full and hearty.

Scorched-rice water made in the pot

Once the rice was all gone, I finished up with the scorched-rice water (sungnyung) I'd made earlier in the pot. My stomach felt warm and like it was digesting well ☺️. After finishing, I really felt like I'd had a great meal.

Is Bulnaneun Jjukkumi in Cheonan worth a visit?

The jjukkumi stir-fry had a proper flame-grilled aroma and great umami, and ordering it less spicy made it just right even for someone who can't handle heat like me.

The lunch set in particular was satisfying — you get the jjukkumi stir-fry along with freshly made pot rice and big shrimp tempura. And since you can keep grabbing more side dishes from the self-serve bar, you'll really leave stuffed.

If you want a properly filling lunch of jjukkumi, definitely pay this place a visit!
