Beef tantanmen with mini tangsuyuk at Starfield Anseong: Chibao

In short

Chibao Starfield Anseong Branch is a Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of Eatopia in Starfield Anseong, Gyeonggi. A couple trying tantanmen (peanut-based noodle soup) for the first time ordered beef tantanmen and shrimp fried rice, then added mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) for 8,000 won to make it a set, and the peanut sauce with chili oil turned out nutty and addictive rather than spicy. Chibao is worth going back to when you want Chinese food that is a step beyond the usual at Starfield Anseong.

We shop at Starfield Anseong pretty often, and although there are tons of restaurants there, we always end up going back to the same handful that suit our taste. But now my husband and I have another Starfield Anseong favorite to add to the list — a Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant that completely won me over~

Where is Chibao in Starfield Anseong's Eatopia food hall?

This is Chibao Starfield Anseong Branch. It's located on the 2nd floor of Eatopia in Starfield Anseong.

It was our first time at Chibao, and since we didn't really know what tantanmen was, we asked — the owner kindly explained it's a nutty, peanut-sauce-based dish. Also, the kitchen can close early, so hurry over before 8pm!

Chibao sits between Shiba Sushi and Baekjeong Bulgogi. There are also plenty of tables right beside the Chibao storefront.

There's also a bar seat right attached to the store. Looks great for solo dining at Starfield too.

Chibao Starfield Anseong Branch's menu board

Chibao menu and set: two dishes plus mini tangsuyuk for 8,000 won

Here's Chibao Starfield Anseong Branch's menu.

  • Yuni jjajangmyeon, Sichuan yuni jjajangmyeon
  • Original tantanmen, beef tantanmen
  • Beef jjamppong (noodle/rice), seafood jjamppong (noodle/rice)
  • Shrimp fried rice
  • Crispy-outside-juicy-inside tangsuyuk, chili tangsuyuk
  • Hearty fried dumplings, jjamppong dumplings, jjajang dumplings, mixed dumplings

It was far more interesting than typical Chinese food. Since I especially love trying new dishes, tantanmen caught my eye. We went with beef tantanmen and shrimp fried rice. The dumplings also come in unusual flavors like jjamppong, so I'm curious to try those next time ◟(⑅•ᴗ•⑅)◞

Sign explaining Chibao's set menu with mini tangsuyuk included

They had set menus that were more than cost-effective — practically a steal. The set includes mini tangsuyuk, but oddly there was no tantanmen set listed on the menu board. We asked, and it turned out a tantanmen set was possible too — pick two menu items and add +₩8,000 (mini tangsuyuk) to get the set price.

Our dishes came out at the same time. Nice touch that the fried rice even came with jjamppong broth on the side.

Shrimp fried rice

The fried rice is tasty plain, but topping it with the jjajang (black bean) sauce is really the way to go, right? Tasting the sauce, I bet Chibao's jjajangmyeon is great too — it's a flavor that everyone, young and old, would like. Slightly sweet jjajang taste, just right.

The shrimp were well-cleaned and plump, so I snapped a photo.

Beef tantanmen on a first try: nutty peanut sauce, barely spicy

Beef tantanmen

Chibao's beef tantanmen piled high with beef

It was my first time trying tantanmen, so I was half excited, half nervous. But the visuals alone were nearly impossible to resist — my favorite chadol-style thinly sliced beef piled high on top of the noodles, with a peanut-sauce-based broth and chili oil giving it a distinctive look.

The noodles paired well with this style of broth — they held onto the tantanmen sauce nicely instead of sliding off. A pass in my book.

Shake it, shake it! Me mixing the sauce. Can you see how thick and creamy it's getting? I love that thickness (ノ´ з `)ノ—̳͟͞͞♡ Mixing the tantanmen with that delicious smell wafting up.

It came out looking like a magma volcanic eruption, but the taste was amazing. I don't even like peanuts normally, but the not-overpowering nutty peanut sauce and the red chili oil worked together so well ჱ̒⸝⸝•̀֊•́⸝⸝)‪ ̖́ It's not spicy at all, and definitely not that mala kind of heat. Curious? You should definitely try it, haha — I think it'd be seriously addictive even spicier.

Mini tangsuyuk with the original sauce: how was it?

Mini tangsuyuk

Chibao's mini tangsuyuk ordered with original sauce

Ta-da, this is the mini tangsuyuk you can add for just ₩8,000. Can't miss out on this incredibly cost-effective set menu. You can choose original or chili sauce — we went with original. But apparently reviews say the chili sauce is delicious too, so I'll have to try that next time.

Cross-section of mini tangsuyuk packed full of meat

Even though it's mini, it was packed full of meat inside. The owner's intro said they hope customers leave full — well deserved praise.

Once you're done eating, just return your empty dishes yourself.

If you're looking for a meal at Starfield Anseong, why not try Chibao? We left fully satisfied. Definitely coming back (⸝⸝ᵕᴗᵕ⸝⸝)ノ♡
