Songnidan-gil charcoal beef with tableside grilling: Sutbul Seonghwa

In short

Sutbul Seonghwa is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant on Songnidan-gil in Songpa, Seoul, serving 1++ top-select cuts. After a weekday evening concert, the writer and a friend ordered the seonghwa sirloin, and a grill server cooked every piece at the right moment so they only had to sit and eat. With room-like divided seating and soft lighting, Sutbul Seonghwa makes sense as a spot for a blind date as much as dinner with a friend.

Beef grilling over charcoal at Sutbul Seonghwa on Songnidan-gil

My friend and I had just come out of a concert on a weekday evening, and I was quietly starving. I was about to just head home, but half-joking, half-serious, I said, hey, should we grill some beef that doesn't make you gain weight? There's obviously no such thing as beef that doesn't make you gain weight, but that night I just wanted to believe it. So here's my review of the clean, satisfying beef dinner I had at Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화), a charcoal Korean BBQ spot on Songnidan-gil in Songpa-gu.. 🫶🏼

How long does it take from Seokchon Station, and is there parking?

Seeing the building at night, it looked really flashy. There's no parking support, so you'll need to use a nearby paid parking lot!

Right as I walked in, something caught my eye — an autograph from a famous chef, haha. Okay, let's go in and decide on the menu right away.

What to order

Sutbul Seonghwa's 1++ top-select beef menu board
Menu board listing shrimp meat, skirt steak, and tenderloin

Looking at the 1++ top-select beef menu, the lineup was solid — shrimp meat (top round), skirt steak, tenderloin, and more <33 From shrimp meat to sirloin to tenderloin, and there was even a whole plate of sea urchin as a side.

There's a full range of soju options too, so it's easy to pick to your taste. They're also running a highball event, so check it out! And today's whisky is on promotion — Macallan 12 Double Cask on the rocks for ₩12,000.

Since I'm a creator who needs wifi anywhere, anytime, here's a shot of that too.

The interior and the mood inside

After ordering, I looked around. Inside, there's a display of aged meats hanging in a row — the display was unique and pretty.

Restaurant interior with soft, ambient lighting

Overall, the seating is divided up like separate rooms, so we could talk comfortably without worrying about the next table. The whole hall has wide spacing between tables and soft lighting, which made for a really nice mood.

Bar area displaying whisky and wine bottles

Does it work as a blind date spot?

That's why I totally got it when people say they come here for blind dates too. The bar area also had an insanely varied lineup of whisky and wine.

Neatly arranged side dish spread

The seonghwa sirloin and side dish spread

Ta-da — they set out the side dishes first, and each one was neatly arranged. There was a nice variety, from geotjeori (fresh kimchi) to gimchi-mari (rolled kimchi) to seasoned vegetable dishes.

A plate of well-marbled seonghwa sirloin

The seonghwa sirloin we ordered! The marbling was truly a work of art. There were even buttered mushrooms set beside it, and I was drooling ㅠㅠ

Sirloin and buttered mushrooms placed on the charcoal grill

The moment the server placed it on the charcoal, smoke and aroma spread everywhere — genuinely hard to resist.

The server who grilled every single piece for us also had an amazing voice.

What is it like having a grill server cook everything for you?

If I had to pick the best thing about this place, I'd say it's hands down the server's service. They grilled each piece themselves and curated the perfect timing, so all we had to do was sit back and eat!!

Their voice was so nice too, so every time they explained something, it was a treat for the ears as well — a lovely evening.

Up close, both the sizzle and the visual were mouthwatering.

A bowl of rice served alongside the beef

Rice was set out too, so beef and rice were fully preheated for the perfect combo.

Beef browning nicely over the charcoal fire

Watching the meat brown nicely over the charcoal while chatting with my friend — a moment full of happiness!

A piece of sirloin served with salt and wasabi

A finished piece of meat, dipped in salt and wasabi, just melted in my mouth ㅠㅠㅠ And this too was plated for us by the grill server, so all we had to do was eat — how easy is that..💗

Final verdict

If we'd just gone home after the concert, it really would have been a shame..! We wandered in by chance and ended up having a relaxed evening catching up with my friend over beef — totally satisfying. Next time, I'd love to come back with a blind-date kind of concept in mind.
