Pyeongtaek Jumulleok near Pyeongtaek Station: 50 years, starting with the sign
I visited Pyeongtaek Jumulleok near Pyeongtaek Station with my wife. I'd heard it was a 50-year-old restaurant, but standing in front of the place, the sign itself caught me off guard. You could feel just how long this place had been standing there from the weathered look of the sign alone.

Inside Pyeongtaek Jumulleok: old-school mood, freshly remodeled seats
Stepping inside Pyeongtaek Jumulleok, that distinct old-restaurant vibe lingered everywhere. Traces of decades spent welcoming guests were baked into the interior. But surprisingly, the seats where customers actually sit were neatly arranged — looks like they'd been remodeled.

It felt like old and new coexisting in harmony. The old-restaurant atmosphere stayed intact, but the actual dining space was kept pleasant, so as a visitor I could sit and eat comfortably without any worries.

Looking around, it felt like a place run by generations of the same family. In particular, a young woman was noticeably leading the operation, taking care of everything from tableware hygiene to food prep. It felt like know-how passed down through generations, plus the meticulousness of a younger generation.
The hospitality was also considerable. You could feel the care in every bit of the service, and thanks to that attentiveness, I felt comfortable throughout the meal.

Why Pyeongtaek Jumulleok uses hanwoo cow beef (and what regulars order for lunch)
As we talked, it became clear that Pyeongtaek Jumulleok takes considerable pride in using female Korean beef (amso hanwoo). There was a clear sense of not compromising on ingredient choice, and I think that stubbornness might be the secret behind keeping regulars coming back for 50 years.
Apparently regulars often come by for the hangover soup, and having such a loyal customer base is itself a sign of how trustworthy this place is.

Two servings of jumulleok: how good are the marinade and the beef?
We ordered two servings of jumulleok and fried rice. The jumulleok was really tasty, more than I expected. The marinade was well absorbed into the meat without being overpowering, and the juiciness and savory depth with every bite stood out.

Their pride in using female Korean beef wasn't just talk — I could tell clearly once I actually tasted the meat.

The biggest surprise at Pyeongtaek Jumulleok: the free side dishes
But honestly, what surprised me most during this visit wasn't the jumulleok — it was the basic side dishes. Every single one was genuinely delicious, and my wife ended up happily eating just from the banchan (side dishes) alone. Usually when you're focused on the main dish, the sides get treated as an afterthought, but at Pyeongtaek Jumulleok, you could feel the care put into each and every side dish.

It felt like the hand-honed skill built over the years, true to an old-school restaurant, showed through even in the basic side dishes. Having side dishes that are just as good as the main menu is proof, I think, of how solid the overall cooking skill is.

Finishing with self-serve fried rice at the table
After the jumulleok, we ordered fried rice, and it turned out you make it yourself. They give you seaweed flakes and sesame oil along with it, so there was fun in mixing it up and making it exactly how you like.
The sauce was really tasty, so even though it's a make-it-yourself setup, it wasn't a hassle at all — it was actually a fun way to wrap up the meal. Finishing off with that fried rice made the whole meal feel complete.
