Haeundae makgeolli bar with boiled pork suyuk: Namcheonjip

In short

Namcheonjip is a makgeolli and Korean liquor bar in Jung-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan. A couple stopped in for dinner and ordered the small boiled pork suyuk (38,000 won) with Jipyeong draft makgeolli (5,500 won), wrapping the pork in lettuce with dried radish, garlic and chili. The suyuk was tender rather than dry and the light makgeolli matched it well, and Namcheonjip has its own parking lot for anyone driving.

Why we chose Namcheonjip in Haeundae

Today's drink of choice was makgeolli ~!! My husband and I had decided before I even left work. Dinner-slash-anju naturally became boiled pork belly. We debated between Haeundae and Gwangalli, and Haeundae won us over — so off we went to Namcheonjip, Haeundae.

About a year or two ago I went to the Gwangalli branch of Namcheonjip and loved the street-side vibe..! So I had high hopes for the Haeundae branch too. The best part is there's parking!! We were on foot this time so it didn't matter, but if you're driving, park in the lot and please, please get a designated driver after drinking !!

First page of the Namcheonjip menu, listing jeon dishes

Namcheonjip menu: jeon (savory pancakes) and Korean traditional liquors

Menu At the Haeundae branch, everything is apparently cooked to order the moment you place it. Also, if there's a wait, they cap your table time at 2 hours 30 minutes. The first page of the menu is all jeon (savory pancakes) — assorted jeon, beef jeon, shrimp jeon, seafood kimchi jeon, pollock jeon, mung bean pancake, and more. The variety rivaled a dedicated jeon restaurant.

Menu page listing specialty dishes, soups, and meals

Specialty dishes, grilled fish, house specials, soups, meals — but our pick today was, without question, boiled pork belly. On our first visit to Namcheonjip we had the mussel-and-pork sampler and it was delicious ><. Hoping today's suyuk delivers too.

Drinks Saengtak, Albam, Jipyeong Draft, Sansung, Horangi, Neurin Maeul, Dalbit Yuja, Boksoondoga, Haechang — this place feels tailor-made for makgeolli lovers! They also carry plenty of other traditional Korean liquors, so no need to worry about anju or drinks. No fights breaking out here even if you come in a big group.

Banchan (side dishes) Before the anju arrives, they bring out a few simple side dishes. Not a huge variety, but the taste was solid.

Jipyeong draft makgeolli on the table

Jipyeong draft makgeolli, 5,500 won: the first glass

Jipyeong draft makgeolli (5,500 won) I don't drink makgeolli that often — occasionally with a meal at home — but drinking it out after a while, it tasted absolutely amazing.

It was my husband's first time trying Jipyeong draft makgeolli, and he said it was clean and light, easy to drink — he liked it. If my husband's happy, I'm happy ~~~ ♡

Toasting with glasses of makgeolli

Cheers to the two of us for a hard day's work .ᐟ ☆ We said we'd cut back on drinking,,,, ▪︎0▪︎

A plate of Namcheonjip's boiled pork belly with dried radish

Small boiled pork suyuk, 38,000 won, with dried radish wraps

Small boiled pork belly (38,000 won) This time, meat and nothing else! The nicely cooked suyuk arrives with savory dried radish on the side. Looks tidy and well put together!

Close-up of boiled pork belly with a good fat-to-lean ratio

The suyuk had a good ratio of fat to lean meat!! There were a few pieces still on the bone, but isn't that the real flavor of suyuk anyway? The lean meat was soft and clean-tasting with no dryness.

Dipping sauce and myeoljeot served with the pork belly

To dip: a sauce and some myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce, I think?)

A bite of pork belly topped with dried radish, garlic, and chili

A familiar flavor is the scariest kind ,,, so we kept it to just the right combo! Suyuk + dried radish + garlic + chili — pop it right in ~

Boiled pork belly wrapped in lettuce

Wrapping it in lettuce is also so good !!! I've been eating a lot of ssam (leafy wraps) lately — if I don't make a point of eating vegetables separately, I guess this is how I end up getting them in ,,!!!! Let's all eat our vegetables and stay healthy (out of nowhere?)

A wrap with fillings sandwiched between two pieces of pork belly

My signature ssam sandwich !! One piece of meat isn't enough — suyuk on top and bottom, with dried radish, garlic, and chili sandwiched in the middle, one more time

For the last bite, finishing off the rest of the Jipyeong draft ~~♡ nom nom nom,,, so good

Finishing off the last of the Jipyeong draft makgeolli

Stuffed full again today — my husband and I cleared the whole table !

Celebrities have come through, and there were foreign tourists too — clearly Namcheonjip is hot, hot, hot !!

Is Namcheonjip in Haeundae worth a visit?

※Final verdict on Namcheonjip, an old-school Haeundae favorite※ This was our first visit to Namcheonjip, Haeundae. It's the kind of place to seek out when you're craving suyuk with makgeolli, or jeon with a glass of makgeolli. The space spans two floors so it works well for groups, and best of all there's a parking lot, making it convenient to visit. If you're looking for suyuk in Haeundae or an old-school restaurant in Haeundae, give Namcheonjip a try !
