In short

Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwasun-ro 142beon-gil in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju, near Sanbangsan, known for braised cutlassfish (galchi jorim). Whenever I travel Jeju, I make sure to eat cutlassfish stew at least once. This time I was exploring the southwest side of the island, so I visited a cutlassfish stew spot near Sanbangsan, "Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch."

Inside Sikgwa Hamkke: seating and high chairs for kids

The inside is spacious, and the tables are set far apart so it felt really comfortable. They also had a high chair ready for little ones 👍

Menu board at Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch

Course menus or boneless cutlassfish stew — what should you order?

Let me introduce the menu 🫶 Course A is centered on boneless cutlassfish stew, and Course C is centered on whole rockfish stew. They come in sizes from 2 to 4 people, which was nice to see.

Course menu listing Course A and Course C

Instead of a full course, we ordered the boneless cutlassfish stew for two. But it still arrived at nearly course-menu level! Let me show you ❤️

Items included in the courses — grilled cutlassfish, seafood ramyeon, marinated shrimp, stir-fried cuttlefish, fried whole rockfish, and more — can all be ordered separately as sides. So if a full course feels like too much, I'd recommend doing what we did: order the boneless cutlassfish stew and add on whatever extra dishes you're craving.

Table full of basic side dishes

How generous are the side dishes at Sikgwa Hamkke?

So this is what the basic side dishes looked like 😮 My boyfriend, who came with me, raved that the side dishes were just as good as the cutlassfish stew itself. Potato salad, seasoned eggplant, shredded dried squid, garlic scape with tenderized beef, soy-braised quail eggs, stir-fried kimchi, seasoned fernbrake, and seasoned lotus root (in what I think was a tangerine or hallabong sauce) — and on top of all that, abalone salad ❗️

Jellyfish and cabbage salad with fried cutlassfish belly

And the sides don't even stop there — soy-marinated crab, jellyfish and cabbage salad, and fried cutlassfish belly, all on the house 💛

Complimentary soy-marinated crab

Even though this soy crab was 'just' a side dish, the meat was plump and the soy sauce had wonderful depth. It melted in my mouth 🥺💛

Abalone and conch rice with acorn jelly and sea urchin seaweed soup

And truly last but not least — abalone and conch rice, a cool acorn jelly dish, and sea urchin seaweed soup 💛 The fact that all of this is just the standard setup for the boneless cutlassfish stew doesn't even make sense.

Boneless cutlassfish stew for two set on the table

How does the boneless cutlassfish stew taste?

Finally, the star of the show arrives ✨ We technically ordered two servings of boneless cutlassfish stew, but with such a dazzling lineup of sides and freebies, the main character showed up fashionably late 💛

Plump boneless cutlassfish and radish in the stew

Can you see how big and plump the cutlassfish pieces are 🤤 There's also sweet radish cut into thick chunks. The seasoning is mild enough for anyone who can't handle much spice. The sauce clings deeply to the fish instead of sliding right off.

Every time I eat cutlassfish stew, picking out the bones is such a hassle — but since this was boneless, it was so easy. Just mix the sauce, rice, and fish all together and dig in.

A bowl of boneless cutlassfish stew mixed with rice

They also give you a bowl of rice, but piling the cutlassfish stew onto the complimentary abalone and conch rice was genuinely delicious 🥺 I don't eat much seafood and I'm sensitive to fishy flavors, but this abalone and conch rice had zero fishiness — I cleaned the bowl in no time.

Hallabong pure-pressed juice received as a review event gift

Hallabong juice from the review event, and Naver reservations

On top of everything, they gave us 100% pure-pressed Hallabong juice as part of a review event — you have to drink this. No additives at all, so it's clean and delicious, the perfect dessert to finish the meal.

You can easily book a table through Naver reservations, so if you're planning to visit, I'd recommend reserving ahead of time.
