Where to eat braised cutlassfish near Sanbangsan: Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch

Let me introduce a cutlassfish stew spot in Jeju! I was looking for somewhere to eat while touring around Sanbangsan and ended up at Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch!

Exterior of Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch

It's near Sanbangsan, so it's a great spot for sightseeing and eating, and best of all, they serve my favorite cutlassfish stew boneless, so it's easy to eat haha. I love cutlassfish but picking out the bones every time is kind of a hassle, isn't it? 😂 They have boneless cutlassfish stew here, so I got to eat properly without that hassle. Hehe.

Inside Sikgwa Hamkke: the main hall and the solo-dining area

Interior with spacious main hall seating
Separate space good for solo dining

Once I stepped inside, the space was bigger than I expected. It wasn't flashy at all — more like an actual home, which I liked even more!

Such a real Jeju-restaurant vibe!! It seemed good for visiting with family too. And there was a separate space made for solo dining, which was nice!!

Sink and restroom entrance inside the restaurant

The restrooms were also inside, separated by gender, so they were easy to use. And there was a sink right in the middle, which was nice!!

What comes with the 45,000 won cutlassfish set for 2

Cutlassfish stew table loaded with side dishes

A table piled full 💛 We had the boneless cutlassfish stew for 2 (₩45,000)! The dishes started coming out one by one, and it wasn't just the main stew — side dishes just kept coming.. I was honestly startled!! Would you believe fried whole rockfish, soy-marinated crab, AND abalone-turban-shell-rice all showed up too?!!

Meat-packed soy-marinated crab and Jeju-style side dishes

There were a lot of very Jeju-style side dishes. Rice, sea urchin seaweed soup, lotus root salad, bracken, pickles, kimchi, neobiani, potato salad, and more. Out of all of them, the soy-marinated crab caught my eye the most 🦀 You can tell from the photo how packed with meat it is?! The salty soy sauce soaked right in and went so well with rice. A spread like this makes a bowl of rice disappear fast just from picking at side dishes before the main dish even arrives lol

Abalone and turban shell rice served as a side dish

And they also serve abalone and turban shell rice as a side dish!! This is genuinely amazing, so good. It's as delicious as the main dish, so make sure to try it. There was such a generous spread of dishes to eat alongside the cutlassfish that it really felt like a proper full Korean meal in Jeju.

Full Jeju table with accompanying dishes

Thick sauce, braised radish and bone-free cutlassfish fillets

The main event is, of course, the red boneless cutlassfish stew 🔥 It comes out bubbling in a big pot with bright red sauce, and just the look of it already seemed so delicious 🤤❤️

Red boneless cutlassfish stew bubbling in the pot

The sauce isn't a thin style — it's thick and clings richly to both the cutlassfish and the radish, total rice-thief style!! The radish pieces are big too, and the sauce soaks all the way through, so putting a piece of radish on rice and mixing it with the sauce is genuinely delicious.

Big chunks of radish soaked in sauce

I love radish, and honestly the sauce-soaked radish was as good as the fish itself lol. Eaten together with rice... it's moist and so good!! The radish is the real MVP of this cutlassfish stew.

A boneless piece of cutlassfish meat

And what I liked most, of course, is that it's boneless!! Even if the stew is tasty, picking out bones one by one can break the flow 😂 but since it's boneless, you just grab a big piece, put it on your rice, done!
