It opened last December, but instead of promoting right away, they spent 8 months making sure the staff had everything down perfectly, and only started actively operating this August. Hearing that really touched me~ Made me realize there's a reason the food at this Idong bar-slash-Chinese-restaurant tastes so good!!!

On top of that, they give free jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) to children who can't afford meals.. Idong bar-slash-Chinese-restaurant Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan is officially a good-hearted business!!!!

The moment I walked in, I felt that cozy yet upscale atmosphere that's so distinctly Chinese-restaurant! Along the window there were bar seats set up for solo diners~ Even though the storefront looks wide across two sides, there weren't as many tables as I expected, so it's a fairly compact space~ But honestly that made it feel more private and let me focus on the food!

And what really surprised me was just how many kinds of liquor they had!! With such a wide range of drinks that pair well with Chinese food, this place felt like it could be a total sanctuary for anyone who likes trying different drinks! It's great for company dinners or group gatherings, and also perfect for a family meal out!

We ordered the stone-plate seafood jjajang and the mini kkanpung shrimp at Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan, this local-recommended bar-and-Chinese-restaurant in Idong, Pohang, and both were completely amazing~ 😭

The visual alone when it arrives is overwhelming!! The seafood is piled on generously and in big pieces, with shrimp, squid, and more packed in without holding back, so every bite has that satisfying chew~

Honestly, when it comes to stone-plate jjajang, there's always one worry! The heat from the stone plate turning the noodles soggy too fast~

But the stone-plate seafood jjajang at this Idong bar-slash-Chinese-restaurant, Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan, stayed warm all the way through while the noodles kept that chewy texture right to the last bite!!

This was seriously touching ㅠㅠ The jjajang sauce wasn't too sweet, and its deep, rich flavor blended with the seafood in a way that made the whole dish burst with flavor 😋

Mini kkanpung shrimp: how big are the shrimp?

I originally thought about getting the full-size kkanpung shrimp, but worried it'd be too much, so I ordered the mini size instead!! But when it arrived, the shrimp were genuinely plump and hefty!!

The moment I bit in, the springy, firm texture of the shrimp meat literally left me speechless~ The sweet-and-sour kkanpung sauce was a fantastic match with the shrimp, and...

The sauce wasn't overly sharp — the sweetness hit first and the tang followed right after, so my chopsticks kept going back for more!

Every single shrimp I picked up from this local-recommended spot's mini kkanpung shrimp had me going "wow, this is good" out loud ㅋㅋ

You could really feel that mindset — opening last December, then spending 8 months preparing before starting to operate at full strength — reflected right in the quality of the food! There isn't a separate self-serve bar, but the owner said if they're too busy, feel free to grab side dishes yourself haha

From the stone-plate seafood jjajang's generous seafood and chewy noodles all the way through, to the mini kkanpung shrimp's plump, springy shrimp with that fantastic sweet-and-sour sauce, plus a full lineup of drinks — this place feels like it could be a true sanctuary for anyone who wants to enjoy both food and drink!
