Dongtan weekend brunch kalguksu with nurungji fried rice: Deungchon
In short
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is a shabu kalguksu (hot pot noodle) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gran Passage Green Zone, right in front of Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A couple came for weekend brunch and ordered the basic mushroom kalguksu (clear broth) for two with added shabu beef, getting vegetables, beef, noodles and fried rice for about 15,000 won per person. The kimchi made with Korean napa cabbage and chili powder was crisp, and the fried rice, stir-fried in the pot at the table, came out crunchy like nurungji (scorched rice) for a great-value lunch.

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is located on the 2nd floor of the Green Zone in the Gran Passage building, right in front of Dongtan Lake Park in Songdong, Dongtan-gu, Hwaseong. There are lots of great restaurants inside Gran Passage, and Deungchon is one of the shabu-shabu spots locals often visit. We came for a weekend brunch, my husband and I hadn't had shabu kalguksu together in a while ^^
Inside the restaurant: clean tables and kimchi made with Korean cabbage
The whole restaurant is clean overall, and the interior is quite upscale for Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch. With tables for 4 to 6 people, it's also a popular spot near Dongtan Lake Park for small gatherings ⭐️

With Chinese-made kimchi being a hot topic lately, it's reassuring that Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu sells kimchi made with domestic napa cabbage and domestic chili powder — one more reason to trust this place.

What we ordered: basic mushroom kalguksu (clear broth) for two plus shabu beef

We ordered two basic mushroom kalguksu (clear broth) and separately added shabu beef. They brought out the shabu beef, kalguksu, and porridge one after another.

Then came the mushroom shabu pot, packed with minari (water celery)! I really love minari, and I could already catch its fragrant aroma. The vegetables and ingredients here are pretty fresh overall, which makes it taste even better ^^
And the kimchi, made with domestic napa cabbage and chili powder, didn't have a strong fermented smell and was crisp and delicious haha

How does the clear-broth shabu-shabu taste?
Once the mushroom shabu started boiling, they added the extra beef we ordered and boiled it again for another 2–3 minutes. You can choose clear, perilla, or spicy broth — we like savory broths, so we went with clear.

The beef was tender, not tough at all, and the broth, infused with various vegetables and beef, was clear in color but rich and delicious. The mushrooms, minari, and bean sprouts were all fresh with nothing spoiled, which made the broth taste even cleaner and deeper ><

Once we'd eaten all the vegetables and beef from the shabu, we dropped in the kalguksu noodles and dumplings right away so the broth kept boiling! The noodles here are chewy, and eating them with the kimchi added even more savory depth ><

Finishing with fried rice as crunchy as nurungji
Even after the kalguksu, we were full, but this nurungji (scorched rice)-style fried rice was not to be missed. Here, they take the pot itself away to fry the rice separately, and the texture isn't porridge-like at all—it's crunchy and savory, really like nurungji fried rice.
Nothing too different flavor-wise, but with egg and a savory taste, and topped with kimchi, it was all delicious—kimchi makes everything taste good haha
