Mokdong gopchang couple set: hot pot and fried rice at Omokgyo
In short
Omokgyo Gopchang is a traditional handmade garlic gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant on Mokdong-dong-ro in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. Two of us ordered the couple set, which arrived in courses: sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), gopchang hot pot, grilled gopchang and fried rice, with a staff member putting on a gopchang fire show partway through. The sharp, garlicky flavor of the gopchang and the fried rice cooked separately in the kitchen made this a meal worth remembering.

I'd been craving gopchang (grilled beef intestine) for a while, so I searched for a gopchang place near Omokgyo and decided to visit this one.

Why two of us ordered the couple set
Omokgyo Gopchang's signature dish is said to be its traditional handmade garlic gopchang, so I went with the couple set, which lets you try several menu items at once including that signature dish. When two people go for gopchang, there are usually a bunch of things you want to try, but ordering one by one can make it awkward to match up the portions and combination. So this time, without overthinking it, we just ordered the couple set that let us try a variety of dishes together.

Even the interior stands out with all the garlic decorations!! haha

The set was put together nicely for two people, so choosing was easy, and I liked being able to try several things together. The table was already piled full from the start, so it really felt like we'd come for gopchang.

Sundubu-jjigae, the first course before the gopchang
As soon as we sat down, the side dishes came out along with a spicy sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) in a stone pot, which we let simmer while waiting for the gopchang. It was nice to have warm broth to start with before the meat at a gopchang restaurant — the broth was fiery and the soft tofu was tender, making it a flavor that would also go well with drinks. The stone pot stayed hot the whole time, so it was good for spooning up bite by bite while waiting. The basic stew at a gopchang restaurant actually matters a lot, and I appreciated that it came out ready to simmer right away. It stayed warm on the table so we could keep eating a spoonful at a time while waiting for the gopchang.

The gopchang was grilled golden brown on the pan, and once it was cooked enough, the savory smell started rising, making me want to eat it right away. Cooking the gopchang until the surface was nicely browned brought out a good texture along with its distinctive savory flavor.

The gopchang fire show at the table
One of the highlights at Omokgyo Gopchang is the gopchang fire show! Once the gopchang was cooked to a certain point, a staff member turned up the flame for a dramatic fire show — the sudden burst of flame made for a fun sight. It was more entertaining than just grilling at the table by ourselves, and this kind of performance kept us from getting bored while waiting.
After the fire show, as the gopchang browned nicely and the savory smell rose, we started eating in earnest. The well-cooked gopchang had a crisp exterior and a chewy interior, with a savory flavor that built up the more you chewed.

How the signature handmade garlic gopchang tastes
The garlic gopchang in particular was so good, ㅠㅠ. The savory yet sharp flavor of the garlic mixed with the deep savoriness of the gopchang gave it a different charm from regular gopchang. The garlic cut through the richness of the gopchang while adding more flavor — I could see why it's the signature dish.
You could enjoy the distinctive savory taste of the gopchang on its own, or pair it with the side items that came with it, and either way it worked well. Instead of eating just one part the whole time, getting several dishes together with the couple set meant we could switch up the flavors along the way, which was great.

The gopchang hot pot in the couple set
The gopchang hot pot included in the couple set also came out simmering in a stone pot. Rather than being cooked separately on the grill, it arrived already bubbling, so we could dig in right away. The hot broth had gopchang in it, which paired well with the grilled version. The gopchang hot pot broth was spicy and warm, good for spooning up between bites of the grilled gopchang. Alternating between the grilled dish and the hot pot kept things from feeling one-note, and it was easy for the two of us to share back and forth.

Fried rice cooked in the kitchen, not on the grill
The fried rice here wasn't the type made by frying leftover gopchang bits on the grill — it was freshly cooked separately and served on its own. I tried the warm, just-made fried rice, and it was so much better than expected that I kept reaching for more even though I was already full. It was especially great mixed with the fluffy egg. The rice grains were well seasoned, with just the right saltiness, and it had a savory, umami flavor that made it a perfect closer. Honestly, of everything we ate that day, the fried rice stood out enough to be memorable. I'd recommend making sure to try the fried rice even if you're already full from the gopchang!

Is the couple set enough for two? Final verdict
Overall, ordering just one couple set let us go through sundubu-jjigae → gopchang hot pot → grilled gopchang → fried rice, making it a great choice for two people. We got to watch the fire show while eating the gopchang, and finish with the delicious fried rice, making for a hearty dinner. I was seriously stuffed by the end.
If you're looking for a place to eat gopchang near Omokgyo, I'd suggest trying the couple set to enjoy a variety of dishes together. Getting the gopchang along with the hot pot and fried rice made it feel like a proper, complete meal.
