Kid-friendly shrimp curry and butter garlic shrimp in Daegu: Rama &

The weather had finally turned a bit cooler, so I took my kid out to see downtown Daegu, and this place immediately came to mind — great location, easy to stop by. Rama & Babana sits on the 2nd floor of a red brick building that stands out right away. Since it's smack in the middle of downtown, even someone with zero sense of direction can find it easily.

Where to park in Dongseong-ro?

Parking is always the biggest worry if you drive into Dongseong-ro, but there's a Geobuk Paid Parking Lot right across from the restaurant, so I parked easily and walked up. The parking fee is reasonably cheap too.

It's also great for setting up wedding invitation meetups or group get-togethers in Daegu, since parking is never a concern.

A Dongseong-ro Indian curry spot that's been around for a long time

This place has held its ground in Dongseong-ro for so long that I've known about it for ages. I used to go often to the Sangin branch of Rama & Babana, and I was so glad to see the Dongseong-ro branch still running as a hygienically certified 'safe restaurant.'

Inside, I took a window seat, and the floor-to-ceiling windows gave a nice, open view of the downtown street outside. It's a really pleasant atmosphere for a leisurely meal in Dongseong-ro, Daegu, while watching the street go by.

The menu

The menu covers a wide lineup of Daegu-style Indian curries — chicken, shrimp, beef, and more — plus Indian fusion dishes like nasi goreng, pu pad pong curry, seafood hot-plate fried rice, butter garlic shrimp, and tandoori chicken. Plenty of choice.

We visited with our kid, and everything looked delicious, so after a long deliberation over what to order, we went with shrimp curry plus extra naan, and a butter garlic shrimp combo.

Is it comfortable to visit with kids?

As soon as we sat down, a staff member brought over a baby chair and immediately set up a kids' tray and cutlery set. Getting that kind of thoughtful care when dining out with a child really puts your mind at ease.

They also gave us a compressed wet wipe that puffs up when you pour water on it. My kid had never seen anything like it before and was fascinated, pouring the water herself and playing with it for a long while, haha.

After we ordered, they brought over utensils, cold water, and pickles.

Shrimp curry, butter garlic shrimp, and pineapple lassi

The pineapple lassi came out first, and it was refreshing and delicious — lassi really does go with curry. Even though it was my kid's first time trying lassi, she took to it right away and drank it happily, smiling.

Next up, the butter garlic shrimp looked fantastic from the moment it arrived! The buttery shrimp were glossy and generously sized, and the salad served alongside was plentiful too, which was satisfying. I was genuinely surprised — the shrimp were about as big as my kid's palm!

The shrimp curry came out with a subtle hint of pepper aroma, and the curry itself was packed with big, plump shrimp too. Tearing off a piece of the chewy naan and dipping it deep into the curry sauce gave this savory flavor with just a touch of spice — such great umami.

Naan really is best eaten by hand, torn apart while it's freshly baked and still steaming hot from the kitchen. We went through a repeating combo of curry-naan-curry-naan on autopilot, haha. It was so, so good!

My kid seemed to fall for the chewy, savory naan too — she tore it apart with her little hands all by herself and kept diligently feeding it to herself.

The spices weren't harsh at all, just smooth and mild, so everyone from little kids to adults left with clean plates, fully satisfied.

Would I go back?

With the nostalgic flavor and the pleasant atmosphere and friendliness of the staff, I'm planning to come back the next time I'm looking for a good meal in Dongseong-ro. If you're downtown and want a satisfying meal, stop by. Recommended, haha.
