Korean BBQ in Chimsan-dong, Daegu with a pregnancy freebie: Gogi 9dan
In short
Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch (고기9단 침산직영점) is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant in Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. Visiting with a wife 36 weeks pregnant, the writer ordered the signature fresh galbi (short rib) and the 9-step set, and after showing proof of pregnancy the couple received a free tortilla pizza with honey. Between sushi topped with fresh wasabi and just-grilled galbi, three group rooms seating 12 to 30, and a dessert corner with patbingsu and Starbucks bean iced coffee, Gogi 9dan was worth remembering from the first bite to the last.

My wife is 36 weeks pregnant now, really in the home stretch. After a day of getting blood drawn for her late-pregnancy checkup, I figured today was the day to feed her some solid beef — so we headed to Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch.
But once we were there, it wasn't just the meat that stuck with me. The awards and certificates on display right at the entrance, the beef being trimmed right in front of us, the spacious group rooms and the pregnancy perks, and the 9-step set that really shone once paired with the meat.

By the end of the meal I naturally thought, "Ah, I get why this place is so busy."
Gogi 9dan, a beef restaurant in Chimsan-dong, Daegu that stands out from the entrance
Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant at 197 Chimsannam-ro, Buk-gu, Daegu. There was plenty to look at just walking in — a wall of awards and related materials displayed right by the entrance.
It's one thing to just say "we're good at this," but seeing the proof laid out like that made a real difference from the first impression. Famous places are famous for a reason, haha.
Then, heading further inside, another thing caught my eye: the beef being trimmed right there in front of us.

Instead of just bringing out beef already prepped in the back kitchen, when I visited they were trimming fresh-looking beef in full view. Watching the meat get prepped right in front of you adds a certain energy, and more than anything, being able to see the condition of the meat yourself builds trust.
At a beef restaurant, the meat is ultimately what matters most. Being able to watch how the ingredients are handled before you even eat made it feel that much more premium — the first sign that told me "there's a reason this place has so many customers."
How big is Gogi 9dan inside?
Looking around the restaurant, I was surprised again — the place is huge.
The whole space felt open and airy, so even though it's a charcoal-grill spot, there was no cramped feeling at all. It's great for a couple like us out for a family meal, but walking around, I could see it would also catch the eye of anyone looking for a spot for a group gathering or company dinner.
Three separate group rooms at Gogi 9dan
From what I saw walking around, Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch has three separate spaces for group dining.
- A private group room for about 12-14 people
- An open-hall group room for about 20-22 people
- An open-hall group room for about 24-30 people
It looked like a good setup for anything from a small family gathering to a fairly large company dinner, choosing the space based on headcount. Especially for meals with multiple families or bringing along parents, where the numbers get awkwardly large, it's hard to find the right restaurant — and this seemed like a pretty solid option for that.
Why my wife sent a photo straight from the restroom, lol
As expected, being in her final month, the first place my wife went looking for was the restroom. A little while later she sent me a photo, and I wondered what it was —
They even have mouthwash here!
Lol. She liked how clean the restroom was, but apparently this little detail was what really caught her attention. She said when the bathroom is clean and pleasant, the food somehow tastes even better.
What was even more fun was the hallway leading to the restroom. It wasn't just a plain restaurant corridor — it had a vibe like walking through a small art gallery, and my wife really liked it.

I never thought I'd end up taking pictures of the hallway at a beef restaurant, haha.
Free tortilla pizza for birthdays, pregnant guests and soldiers
At Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, if you're celebrating a birthday, pregnant, or a soldier, you can get a free tortilla pizza and honey. We'd just sat back down at our table when a staff member noticed my wife and kindly explained the service menu to us first. (This is the info we were given during our visit.)

Birthday guests can get the service on their actual birthday with an ID, or even on another day if they show an actual cake brought for a family celebration. Pregnant guests can confirm with a pregnancy badge or pregnancy certificate, and soldiers with a military ID or leave papers.
Since my wife is pregnant, we got the tortilla pizza for free. Honestly, at first I thought, "it's just a free item, probably something light," but... it was surprisingly good, lol. Dipping the warm tortilla pizza in honey, my hand kept reaching for it even before the meat arrived.
The main event: fresh galbi plus the 9-step set
What we chose that day was Gogi 9dan's signature fresh galbi (short rib) and the 9-step set.

If it's your first visit, I'd personally recommend ordering the 9-step set alongside the meat rather than just the meat alone.

The 9-step set comes with 80g of Hanwoo salt-seasoned yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), fresh wasabi with sushi, fresh pork kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), and spicy jjolmyeon (chewy noodles). It doesn't feel like a bundle of random side dishes — each item is good on its own, but the real magic starts once you pair them with the beef.
First bite: Hanwoo salt-seasoned yukhoe
While waiting for the meat to grill, we started with the yukhoe, and it was the first thing in the 9-step set that really woke up my appetite. As I was eating the yukhoe on its own, I glanced at the sushi and fresh wasabi that came with it and immediately thought —
Wait... what if I put freshly grilled galbi on top of this?
How to eat the fresh galbi at Gogi 9dan
Grill the fresh galbi over the charcoal until it's just right, put a bit of fresh wasabi on top of the sushi, then add a piece of the freshly grilled galbi on top. Eat it all in one bite.
Ah... this combination was genuinely great. It turns into a completely different dish compared to eating the galbi alone. With rice, wasabi, and just-grilled beef all in one bite, it feels like making your own beef sushi on the spot. Once we discovered this combo, we kept putting meat on the sushi for as long as it lasted, lol.
If it's your first time at Gogi 9dan, don't think of the 9-step set as just "a set with a few side dishes" — try combining it like this.
The surprise rice-thief: fresh pork kimchi jjigae
It's always a pleasant surprise to find a beef restaurant with good kimchi jjigae. This one was very much to my taste — plenty of meat inside, and rather than the clean, tidy kimchi jjigae flavor common these days, it had that rich, familiar taste like the ones from old-school rice restaurants.
One spoonful and you're naturally craving rice. I was about to name it my top rice-thief of the day, but I paused — there was a strong contender. The seasoned crab that came as a basic side dish, lol.
Do the side dishes go well with the beef?
At a beef restaurant, you're already fairly satisfied if the meat alone is good, but when even the basic side dishes keep drawing you in, the whole meal feels that much richer. Salad, pickled onion, seaweed side dish — plenty of things to snack on between bites of meat, and every single one paired well with the beef.
Among them, the seasoned crab really stuck with me — the second of the day's two great rice-thieves, alongside the kimchi jjigae. And the japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) deserves a mention too. I kept picking at it between bites of the main meat, almost like a snack, and somehow my hand kept going back for more.
Spicy jjolmyeon with beef: don't skip it

Don't let the spicy jjolmyeon from the 9-step set be just a side dish either. A chopstick-full of jjolmyeon with a piece of grilled beef on top makes for another great combination. After eating a lot of meat, there's a certain heaviness that lingers, but eating it with the jjolmyeon completely shifts the mood.
So we didn't even need to add extra rice dishes — the 9-step set alone kept giving us new ways to eat.
- Eating the yukhoe,
- then making beef sushi with the fresh galbi,
- then rice with the kimchi jjigae,
- then jjolmyeon topped with beef...
This is exactly why I'd recommend the fresh galbi + 9-step set combo.
Why we skipped the dessert café afterward
I thought we'd just leave stuffed after the meal, but they had the ending pretty well covered too. When we visited, ordering meat came with a free patbingsu (shaved ice dessert).

There are times after a big meat meal when you crave something cool and sweet. Not having to go find a café or dessert shop and just finishing it off with patbingsu right at the table was surprisingly satisfying. And looking at the dessert corner, patbingsu wasn't the only thing there.
The self-serve dessert corner at Gogi 9dan
Personally, what won me over again here was the iced coffee. Why is a cold iced coffee after a beef meal so good, lol. Especially since they had Starbucks beans and ice cups set up separately, so you could make your own iced coffee right there — that was a nice touch.
It wasn't just "here's a cup of coffee prepared for you" — having ice cups ready too showed a real attention to detail. And it wasn't just coffee either. There were crispy ppeongtwigi rice puffs to snack on, plus plum drink and other beverages, good for cleansing the palate after the meat.

A bite of patbingsu, a rice puff snack, and finally an iced coffee with an ice cup. Even with a full stomach, you end up grabbing one more thing at the dessert corner, lol. It might seem like a small thing, but it felt like they really cared about sending customers off happy even after the meal was over — and I really appreciated that.
What stayed with us before and after the meal
We came here originally just to feed my wife some beef in her final month of pregnancy, but looking back, there were memorable points from the entrance all the way to dessert.
- The awards and materials displayed at the entrance
- Watching the beef get trimmed right in front of us
- The spacious dining room and three group spaces
- Being offered the pregnancy service before we even asked
- The combination of fresh galbi and the 9-step set
- Everything from patbingsu to Starbucks bean iced coffee

Any one of these might seem like a small detail on its own, but put together, they naturally made me think, "Ah, there's a reason this place is so busy."
Is Gogi 9dan a good pick for family meals and work dinners in Chimsan-dong?
What especially stood out to me was the group dining space. With rooms split between a private space for 12-14 people and open halls for groups of 20 or nearly 30, it would be quite practical for anyone looking for a company dinner spot in Chimsan-dong or a family gathering restaurant in Buk-gu, Daegu. It also felt good to be looked after with the pregnancy service, visiting the way we did.
Food-wise, if we come back, I'd order the fresh galbi + 9-step set combo again. Especially the combo of a bit of fresh wasabi on the sushi topped with a piece of galbi fresh off the charcoal — you really have to try that at least once.
With unexpected rice-thieves like the kimchi jjigae and seasoned crab, plus jjolmyeon and yukhoe, there was a lot of fun in constantly building new combinations at the table. And once you're done eating, don't just walk straight out — make sure to stop by the dessert corner. From patbingsu to plum drink, rice puffs, and cold iced coffee made with Starbucks beans, that's how you properly wrap up the meal, haha.
If you're looking for a place to eat beef with family in Chimsan-dong, or a spacious beef restaurant for a group, Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is worth checking out. For my wife and me, this was a hearty meal we shared in her final month of pregnancy, so I think it'll stay in our memory a long time. :)
