Cheonan beef noodle house: kalmyeon and gabrisal bossam, Yukdaejang

In short

Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch is a yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) restaurant on Handeul 2-ro in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan. Not usually a yukgaejang fan, the writer shared saengyuk kalmyeon (12,000 won), a version made with thick udon-like noodles, and a gabrisal bossam platter (17,000 won) between two people, drinking the broth to the last spoonful and clearing the whole bossam platter. The wide surface parking lot in front of Yukdaejang also makes it an easy choice for groups or family outings.

Today I visited Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch, a well-known spot in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan! I don't think I'd seen this restaurant around here before, so it might be fairly new. The yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) here was delicious, so let me start the review.

Parking space in front of the restaurant

Wide surface parking lot in front of the restaurant

One of the perks of this place is how spacious the parking is. There's a surface lot right in front, and since there's a row of restaurants there, it's surprisingly huge. It looked totally fine for coming with a big group too.

Spacious interior with many tables

Can the dining room seat a group?

The dining room at Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch is pretty spacious with a lot of seats. There were 4-person and 2-person tables among others, and since the place is so big, it looked like it could handle group parties too.

What's on the menu at Yukdaejang Cheonan Baekseok Branch?

There were so many kinds of yukgaejang: traditional old-style yukgaejang, yukkalmyeon, saeng-yukkalmyeon, chadol (thin-sliced brisket) yukgaejang, gopchang-loaded yukgaejang, budae (army-stew style) yukgaejang, dakgaejang (chicken version), sundubu yukgaejang, and more. There were also other dishes like yangji seolleongtang (beef brisket ox-bone soup), sagol tteok-mandu-guk (rice cake and dumpling soup), budae jeongol, yukgaejang jeongol, sundubu jeongol, and gabrisal bossam han-pan, so there was plenty of variety to enjoy.

Self-bar with tableware and banchan

Self-bar and the side dishes that come with the meal

The self-bar had baby chairs, tableware, and banchan (side dishes), all kept clean.

Kkakdugi, stir-fried fish cake, and chives banchan

For basic banchan we got kkakdugi (radish kimchi), stir-fried fish cake, and chives, and you could grab more from the self-bar. Even the side dishes were delicious here! There was salt and pepper on the table too, so you could adjust the seasoning yourself. Though honestly the seasoning was spot-on already, so we didn't need to add anything.

Ordering saengyuk kalmyeon and a gabrisal bossam platter for two

We ordered saeng-yukkalmyeon for 12,000 won and gabrisal bossam han-pan for 17,000 won.

Since it's known for yukgaejang, we ordered one from that category along with the gabrisal bossam han-pan. The yukkalmyeon came with a generous amount of broth and a big portion. The food also came out fast, which was nice.

The two of us shared everything, and it left us exactly full.

What comes on the gabrisal bossam platter, and is it enough for two?

The gabrisal bossam han-pan came with gabrisal (pork skirt meat), napa cabbage leaves, baechu kimchi, chili peppers, and garlic. The bossam portion itself was generous too.

The baechu kimchi was well-fermented and delicious enough to eat on its own. They also gave us ssamjang (dipping paste) and saeu-jeot (salted shrimp) to dip the gabrisal in. It paired great with the yukgaejang too, going down easily.

Can you see how glossy the meat looks? It was genuinely so delicious. Even the gabrisal on its own was tender and tasty.

Eating the gabrisal plain, then piled on kimchi, then wrapped in cabbage with chili and garlic — before we knew it, the whole bossam platter was gone. It was so good I wanted to order more. At 17,000 won, the price felt just right too.

What kind of noodles go into the saengyuk kalmyeon?

They told me the saeng-yukkalmyeon comes with udon-like noodles. There was also a regular yukkalmyeon on the menu. Honestly, I'm not usually a big yukgaejang fan, so I went with a noodle version — and looking back, it was a great choice!

First off, the yukgaejang broth itself was so tasty that even I, not really a yukgaejang person, could thoroughly enjoy it. The noodles were chewy and the broth flavor soaked into them nicely. There was also plenty of beef and other ingredients in it, which I liked. The portion was big enough to fill you up, and it wasn't too spicy — just right for a satisfying meal.
