Mokpo ox tail soup restaurant with ₩3,000 drinks: Mujinjang Sik-yuk

In short

Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang is a third-generation Korean beef tail soup (kkori gomtang) restaurant near Peace Square in Mokpo. A ₩27,000 bowl of Korean beef tail soup brought 4–5 palm-sized chunks of tail in a rich, already-seasoned bone broth, served with a chive salad seasoning mix and well-aged radish kimchi. Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang has no dedicated parking, so roadside or a nearby public lot is the option, but with drinks at ₩3,000 it is worth it for a truly filling meal.

A bowl of ox tail soup at Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang in Mokpo

Looking for a filling meal in Mokpo?

Deep, rich broth made only with Korean beef tail. I visited Mujinjang Han-u Kkori Gomtang, a third-generation restaurant famous among locals.

Where is Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang, and where do you park?

It's near Peace Square and there's no dedicated parking lot. You can use the roadside or a nearby public parking lot. I parked on the roadside.

We had the kkori gomtang (ox tail soup). It's ₩27,000 and they say they use 100% Korean female cattle. I was already excited before even eating. Female cattle has no gamey smell and is tender.

What the tail soup broth tastes like

The kkori gomtang came out within 10 minutes. At Mujinjang you don't need to season it yourself. Pepper and salt are already added. You can add more after tasting. The broth was already seasoned, so the moment I took my first sip my whole body warmed up and I let out an involuntary 'kya~'

It was enough for me so I didn't add any. And instead of chili paste, you can eat it with the seasoned chive salad. This is genuinely delicious.

Four to five palm-sized chunks of beef tail

There were 4-5 large chunks of ox tail inside. About the size of my palm. The meat falls off easily in big pieces. My husband and I picked them up with our hands and ate.

It's delicious if you pick the meat off and dip it in the sauce here. The sauce has a tangy, salty flavor. It really wakes up your appetite.

I mixed rice into the soup and ate it with radish kimchi, and once the meat cooled down a bit I'd pick it off and eat it. I can't handle really hot food well. Steam was rising up from it.

The portion of meat was so generous it seemed like it would cover my daily protein needs and then some. I've been really into protein lately and try to make sure I get some at every single meal! Meat really is the king of protein. I'm turning 40 soon so I can't not care about my health.

My husband, eating well. My lunch date. Thank you.

The broth was rich and deep, so the flavor was great. Since it's hot, I took out the meat first before mixing in the rice. The broth is piping hot and the bone broth is intense. The chive relish is a stroke of genius too.

Radish kimchi, thin noodles and eating here with kids

I already like radish kimchi, but the one here was fully fermented and tangy, totally my style. Of course radish kimchi goes with gomtang. If your kids like soup, they'd probably eat this well too. If your child is very young, it'd be good to ask them to leave out the pepper before ordering.

They also gave us thin wheat noodles, and mixing them into the soup and slurping them down filled me up quickly. It was just the right amount for two or three bites.

Drinks are only ₩3,000 at Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang

A distinctive point here. Drinks are ₩3,000. Given today's prices, most places charge ₩5,000, so ₩3,000 is a pleasant surprise! Drinkers could probably go for round four or five here with their soup.

Koreans really do run on rice. Bread and cake alone aren't enough for a meal. You need to eat a proper hearty soup to feel like you've had a real meal. Am I getting old...

They said this place has been running for three generations. We ate well and enjoyed it, and my husband said he used to come here a lot back when it was at its old location. Being around that long is proof the taste holds up too.

They said if you leave a receipt review for the review event, you get a free drink, so it'd be nice to eat a hearty meal and have a cola too. We passed since we were already full.

Notice about the receipt review event

Next time I should try the knee-cartilage soup my husband likes. If you want a hearty, filling meal, I recommend Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang.
