Appetizers and side dishes that passed mom's picky palate

A colorful, appetizing array of appetizers and side dishes was set out, giving that upscale, well-cared-for feeling at this Jisan-dong, Gwangju restaurant 'Tams Badaetgaja.' Each dish came with a detailed explanation, which helped me understand the food better and even seemed to bring out the flavor more.

Every single side dish was neat and clean, and not one of them was lacking in flavor. I brought my mom along, who has a picky palate, and it won her over right away.

Black sesame dressing salad with accompanying plate

The salad topped with sprouts, nuts, and tomato in black sesame dressing was generously portioned, with a nutty sweetness that was great for whetting the appetite.

With Western-style courses you often still feel not-quite-full afterward, but here the variety and volume of appetizers, lobster soup, lobster broth, noodles, and Korean side dishes made for a truly satisfying meal.

The salad was fresh, and the lobster soup was rich and smooth — so delicious. Its depth of flavor was on a completely different level from an ordinary cream soup, and the cold noodles were also based on a broth simmered with lobster, giving them extra depth too. The warm soup before the meal was perfect for settling the stomach and getting the appetite going.

Rich lobster soup with garlic bread

The tableware was also well matched to each dish.

Shine Muscat baguette and vegetable canapés

A baguette topped with Shine Muscat grapes and canapés topped with vegetables were also served. Nude gimbap and sushi are the standard items, but on our visit they'd been swapped for canapés, which I personally liked since they were light and easy to just pick up and eat.

They were easy to pop in your mouth in one bite, and each one was delicious, working well as an appetizer. You could feel the chef's care and skill in every bite. The jellyfish salad was also great, and my mom kept complimenting the food throughout the meal, haha.

Even before the main dish arrived, there were so many dishes and such generous portions that I was already full.

Half a seasoned grilled lobster: still a generous portion

As I was eating away, the star of the show finally arrived — lobster! The main of the Tams half course is half a seasoned grilled lobster, and even at half a portion, the amount was so generous it moved me 🥹. Genuinely great value for a course like this!

Called the king of the sea for its superior taste and nutrition, lobster lives in the cold waters at 100–200m depth off the coasts of Canada and the eastern US, has a lifespan of 80–100 years on average, and can grow up to 20kg.

Main dish of half a seasoned grilled lobster

In Southeast Asia, warmer water temperatures make lobsters grow faster, but as a result they turn out dry and tough, with noticeably worse flavor. That's why Tams Badaetgaja, a meet-the-parents restaurant in Gwangju, only uses fresh, A-grade live lobster and only the highest-quality lobster from Canada.

Canadian lobster takes about 10 years to grow to 1kg, and the Tams course serves lobster at 600–700g, roughly 7–8 years old, while the couple's course serves 1.6–2.0kg lobster, 16–20 years old.

Full lobster meat with two dipping sauces

You could tell it was going to be delicious just by looking at how full the meat was. The texture was tender and chewy, and the meat came out easily without a struggle, making it easy to eat. The seasoning was seasoned just right — even with two sauces provided, I honestly didn't need to dip it at all.

There was no bitterness or dryness at all, and no fishy smell, either — it was the best lobster I've ever had. You could immediately tell just how much freshness and grade make a difference.

Close-up of lobster meat that's easy to pick clean

I was glad to get such a generous portion of the chewy, sweet lobster meat, and dipping it in mustard or chili sauce brought out an even deeper savory flavor. But it was also perfect just as it was, seasoned. Even the tomalley was soft and nutty, incomparable to ordinary lobster — no bitterness at all.

It got more delicious the more I ate, and it was a truly satisfying lunch half course. I've searched hard and visited many pricey restaurants for anniversaries or birthdays before, and a lot of them were disappointing for the price — but this is a lobster course restaurant in Gwangju that's great for dates, blind dates, or any special day. It's also a top stamina food, so it's great to bring your parents along too.

Special fried rice and lobster leg soup to finish

The lemon water tip for eating lobster at Tams Badaetgaja

The spicy, tangy lobster leg soup cut through any richness beautifully — a real standout. With cold and warm dishes served alongside each other in good balance, it made for a very filling meal.

They also served lemon water for each person — not for drinking, but for washing your hands while eating lobster. It cuts the fishy smell so your hands stay clean and odor-free, which was such a nice touch. It's a handy tip for any hands-on dish like fresh spring rolls, too — normally even repeated washes with soap won't get rid of the smell, but with this, there was no smell on my hands at all. Genius!

Sujeonggwa served as dessert after the meal

We were so full I'd completely forgotten about dessert, but then sujeonggwa or coffee was served. The sujeonggwa had a sweet cinnamon fragrance and was so refreshing — the dessert rounded off a perfect meal at this Gwangju restaurant.

The owner and staff were all kind and gracious, which made for a comfortable meal, and with so many varied private rooms, it's well suited for meet-the-parents dinners, first-birthday parties, 70th birthday celebrations, and other group gatherings — this Gwangju lobster course restaurant, 'Tams Badaetgaja.' It's also great for company dinners or family gatherings in Gwangju, with a relaxed, scenic setting where you can take your time. I'd recommend it as a Gwangju restaurant for spending special time with people who matter to you!
