Garlic-aged raw galbi vs LA galbi in Yangju: Manpo Galbi return visit

In short

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch is a charcoal-grill galbi restaurant on Songnang-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi. On a second visit with her husband, the writer grilled garlic-aged seasoned raw short ribs alongside LA galbi and worked through the self-serve banchan bar, six or more standard side dishes, free hamheung naengmyeon and self-serve bbeongtwigi (puffed rice cracker) ice cream. Everything from the side dishes to dessert held up exactly as before, making Manpo Galbi a place worth booking again.

This was my second visit — I remembered how satisfying the first one was, so I went back with my husband. The taste and service were still just as consistent, so I'm happy to write another honest review. Even on a repeat visit, the satisfaction hadn't dropped at all, which made me understand once again why this place keeps getting loved.

What is on Manpo Galbi's self-serve banchan bar and side dish lineup?

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch runs a self-serve banchan (side dish) bar, so you can help yourself to as much as you want. The moment we sat down, the fully stocked banchan bar caught our eye.

Various side dishes set out on the table

Onion strips, tangy radish salad, napa cabbage kimchi, cheongyang chili peppers, crunchy cabbage salad with perilla dressing — all laid out for you to take as much as you like. On top of that, the banchan brought to the table separately numbered over six kinds, including braised dried radish, seasoned bellflower root, cucumber-garlic salad, wild garlic leaf salad, and water celery salad. None of them were overly strong in seasoning — each was mildly and well balanced, so I kept reaching for them even before the meat arrived. Yukhoe (beef tartare) and egg chive pancake also came as part of the standard setting. The yukhoe was fresh and tender, and the chive pancake was studded with spicy cheongyang chili for extra savoriness. Honestly, these sides alone could have finished off a bowl of rice.

The potato salad topped with garlic flakes was especially delicious. It was a late brunch so I was hungry, and having so many hearty side dishes to eat while the meat cooked was great.

Garlic-aged raw short ribs vs LA galbi at Manpo Galbi: which one wins?

The star of Manpo Galbi is, of course, the ribs. The raw ribs, aged with a thick layer of minced garlic on top, were grilled directly on the charcoal grate. The garlic flavor soaked into the meat without being heavy, adding a subtle savoriness.

We also ordered LA galbi, and it was fun picking every bit of meat off the bone. The deep charcoal aroma was exactly as good as our first impression, even on this second visit. The LA galbi has a stronger seasoning, so it's better to eat it last. The seasoned raw ribs felt a bit mild by comparison, but I actually liked that because I could taste the meat's own flavor more. For my taste, it was a tie!

Grilling the ribs together with garlic scapes cut through the richness and added a crunchy texture, so my chopsticks kept going back for more. The staff also checked in on the meat now and then, which made it easy even for grilling beginners, and the smoky charcoal aroma gave a flavor you could never get cooking at home.

Free hamheung naengmyeon served after the meal

After finishing the ribs at Manpo Galbi, hamheung naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) is set out for free. My husband and I chose one water-style and one spicy-style. I usually prefer the spicy version, but the water-style here was surprisingly good too. They said the noodles are house-made — the kind of quality you'd pay at least ₩8,000 for at other barbecue restaurants elsewhere. Hard to believe it's free... it really tastes like a specialty shop's! The mild broth topped with radish, cucumber, and sesame cleaned the palate perfectly, rounding off the meal beautifully. The spicy bibim-style noodles tossed in sweet-and-sour chojang sauce were also so good and refreshing that I kept thinking about them afterward. At the end, we could help ourselves to a dessert of ice cream scooped onto a bbeongtwigi (puffed rice cracker), which made for a satisfyingly full finish.

Why the second visit to Manpo Galbi Yangju worked, plus parking and booking tips

Checking the menu again, the prices were just as reasonable as on my first visit, which reassured me that this is a place worth trusting and returning to even after two visits. Seeing that the overall quality — from side dishes to the main course to dessert — hasn't slipped at all, I think I'll be back again. Parking is easy and the interior is spacious, which I also liked. On the way out I noticed there was a wait, so I'd recommend making a reservation before you visit.
