What is the atmosphere like inside The Bangpaje?

The inside of The Bangpaje had a warm, comfortable atmosphere overall. Instead of feeling like a flashy sashimi restaurant, it's a neatly arranged space, so it's good for a family meal and also comfortable for drinks with friends or a date. Inside, there was an actual fish tank, which really gave off that sashimi restaurant feeling.

Right at the entrance, the phrase 'today's best seasonal sashimi' caught my eye. I liked that you can taste a good seasonal sashimi lineup that changes day to day, and once the table was actually set, it was much more generous than I expected.

The Bangpaje's seasonal sashimi: thick cuts that won mom over

The sashimi we'd been waiting for arrived, and it looked delicious right away. Several kinds of sashimi came out thickly sliced, so we could pick whatever we liked, and each piece had enough thickness that you could really feel the texture. It's great just dipped simply in soy sauce and wasabi, but wrapped with aged kimchi or in a lettuce wrap it had a completely different feel, so I kept reaching for more. Personally, I find it disappointing when sashimi is cut too thin, so I liked that each piece here had real bite.

She was so happy, which made me really happy too.

What side dishes come with the seasonal sashimi?

We ordered mostly the seasonal sashimi, and along with the main sashimi came a variety of side dishes. From seafood to aged kimchi (mukeunji), wasabi, and kimchi — all good pairings for sashimi — it was fun trying each one. The seafood was especially fresh, which I loved, ㅠㅠ good stuff.

Even the side dishes weren't ordinary. There were dishes meant to be eaten with seaweed (gim), from nutty snacks to items that switched up the flavor along the way — the variety made the whole meal feel much richer than if we'd just eaten sashimi the whole time. Putting a nutty side dish on crispy seaweed and eating it in one bite seemed like it would pair really well as a drinking snack too.

The finish: a spicy broth with cheongyang chili

At the end, you can't skip the warm broth. After eating sashimi, having the spicy broth felt like it really cleared everything out! With cheongyang chili in it, it was spicy yet refreshing, so I kept spooning it up. Finishing cold food like sashimi with a warm broth felt like it properly completed the meal.

Who is The Bangpaje best for?

Overall, it was a satisfying place, not just because of the sashimi's freshness but also because of the variety of dishes served alongside it. Rather than just eating one plate of sashimi, it'll suit people who want to sit down and slowly enjoy a generous spread of different things. Looking at the photos afterward, the table was full of plates, and it really does look like we ate well haha.
