Seongsu gyukatsu restaurant with private mini grills: Gyuen Dang

In short

Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on the second floor of an alley off Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil in Seongsu, Seoul. For lunch the writer ordered the tenderloin gyukatsu at 24,000 won and the hamburg omelet rice at 17,000 won, grilled the cutlet with a pat of butter on the private mini charcoal grill at the table, and dipped it in ginger sauce so it never tasted heavy. With a grill for each diner, Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch suits a lunch date and solo dining equally well.

I went to 'Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch' for lunch in Seongsu. Gyukatsu (beef cutlet) grilled on your own personal mini charcoal grill! The vibe was relaxed and not too fancy, making it great for a lunch date too.

Walk into the alley and you'll find Gyuen Dang. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor! There's usually a wait, so I'd recommend booking a reservation before you go.

The interior isn't super open, but the tables aren't packed too closely together, so it never felt cramped while eating. And since it's a place where you grill your own gyukatsu on a mini grill, the AC was blasting inside the whole time. So I got to eat comfortably without ever feeling hot.

Individual mini grill set on each table

With the mini grills on every table and the overall interior, it really feels like you've stepped into a gyukatsu spot in Japan. Since each table has its own grill, it seems like a great place to go solo too!

Menu listing gyukatsu, rice bowls, and omelet rice

The menu isn't just gyukatsu — there are rice bowls, omelet rice, curry, and udon too. I was debating between tenderloin and striploin gyukatsu, but I saw a lot of people around me ordering the omelet rice and it looked delicious, so I gave that a try too.

Table card explaining the butter mini-grill method

There's a card explaining how to eat the dish, which you can read while waiting for the food. Turns out the gyukatsu is grilled in butter! Sounds delicious already — my expectations went up.

What we ordered: tenderloin gyukatsu 24,000 won and hamburg omelet rice 17,000 won

Here's the omelet rice! It's covered in a soft, fluffy egg blanket. Can you see the hamburg steak underneath?

You split the egg open and pour the sauce over it so it flows down! The seasoning was just right, and the sauce wasn't too strong, so the flavor was pleasant and never overwhelming.

The softness of the egg and the juiciness of the hamburg steak blend really well with the sauce.

How to grill tenderloin gyukatsu with butter on the mini grill

The tenderloin gyukatsu looks thick and delicious, right? Honestly, it looks even better than the gyukatsu I had in Japan, haha! And gyukatsu has that extra perk of letting you grill it exactly how you like it~ You can keep every last bite warm, and I found the whole process of grilling it on the mini charcoal grill pretty fun too.

Gyukatsu grilling together with butter on the charcoal grill

You place the meat on the grill and grill it together with butter! Before I even started grilling, I lightly brushed the grill with butter. Then I placed the gyukatsu on top and added more butter.

Gyukatsu absorbing butter as it grills

The meat is soft and tasty. Once you pile on plenty of butter, the gyukatsu absorbs it as it grills, and the buttery flavor in every bite is insane! The butter aroma takes it to a whole other level of delicious!!

Wasabi, salt, and ginger sauce served alongside the meal

Does the ginger sauce cut the richness of the beef cutlet?

It tastes even better dipped in the wasabi, salt, and ginger sauce that come with it! The ginger sauce was genuinely delicious~ After a few bites, you might start to feel like it's getting a bit rich, but thanks to the ginger sauce, I never felt that at all! The ginger sauce is the real kicker.
