Second-floor beef katsu restaurant in Seongsu, Seoul: Gyuen Dang
In short
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a gyukatsu (beef cutlet) and omurice restaurant on the second floor of a building 3-4 minutes' walk from Exit 3 of Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. Arriving at 11:40am with her sister, the writer ordered tenderloin gyukatsu, hamburg omurice and two colas; the tenderloin was tender and the portion reasonable, though big eaters may want more. Because Gyuen Dang sits on the second floor rather than in a basement, the ventilation is good, and with solo seats it works for a Seongsu date or a meal alone.

My sister and I decided to grab lunch together while hanging out in Seongsu. Seongsu is such a hot spot that good restaurants are everywhere, and I'd heard the waits can be insane — and among all those restaurants, the one we picked was Gyuen Dang!!! A place where you can have gyukatsu (beef cutlet) and omurice together! Plus that omurice had been showing up all over my Instagram as this famously hard-to-make dish, so I went in with pretty high expectations.
How to find Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch: 3-4 minutes from Exit 3, second floor
Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch

We walked maybe 3-4 minutes from Exit 3 of Seongsu Station. Gyuen Dang, tucked in an alley, wasn't hard to find at all. The 1st floor was a taco shop, and Gyuen Dang is on the 2nd floor, so up the stairs we went~

The exterior is full of Japanese lettering. What I especially liked was that every gyukatsu place I'd been to before was, for some reason, underground — the other gyukatsu spot in Seongsu I'd visited, and even the ones I went to in Japan, all underground. Ventilation was never great because of that, so I already loved that Gyuen Dang is on the 2nd floor.

As you'd expect from a popular spot, there's a wait notice posted up. Even though I visited at 11:40am, the place was already pretty packed inside.
Seating at Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch: solo seats on the second floor

I didn't get many shots of the interior, but there are 2-tops, 4-tops, and even solo seats, so people eating alone don't have to feel awkward. I'm the type who gets self-conscious sitting alone at a big table when it's crowded, so having solo seats available is genuinely such a relief~

This is where we sat! Right in front of the kitchen, and there was air conditioning too, so it was a great spot. (Though because of the AC, one downside was that a lot of smoke kept blowing right at me,,,,,, that part was a bit rough.)
What we ordered: tenderloin gyukatsu, hamburg omurice and cola
Order details, for two women

They're currently running a review event giving out a mini okonomiyaki, so write a review and try one if you visit. We ordered the restaurant's signature dishes — striploin gyukatsu and hamburg omurice — plus a cola each to keep things refreshing.

Before the food arrived, they read us instructions on how to eat the gyukatsu and how to eat the omurice.

Since we were right by the kitchen, the food came out fast, which was so nice.
How the tenderloin gyukatsu tasted: first bite off the grill, second bite with butter

The gyukatsu came out first and the staff member torched it to fire it up.

Ah, that moment when gyukatsu gets grilled like that is always the most exciting... Being striploin, it was really tender and delicious. I'm someone who can't eat much beef (I get sick of it fast), but the portion was just right, so I could finish it cleanly before getting tired of it. But it does seem like it would be way too little for big eaters — you can order extra meat separately, so I'd recommend adding some if needed. First bite: eat it plain, straight off the grill. Second bite: with butter on top! Eating it with butter had richer flavor, but since I'm not great with oily, heavy food, eating it plain felt cleaner to me!
Hamburg omurice at Gyuen Dang: the egg didn't slide open, but the taste passed

Hahaha the omurice is supposed to slice smoothly and slide right open,,,,,, (I'd seen it all over Instagram) but nope, none of that happened for us. I was filming it and it was so funny that in the end I just cut it open with a knife myself haha.

Once the sauce goes on, it photographs pretty appetizingly, right??? The hamburg steak was well cooked with good juiciness, and the egg was moist inside with a nicely cooked, soft exterior. The sauce, hamburg, and egg all came together really well — perfect for a satisfying, quick meal. Since the omurice comes with both the hamburg and the egg, I personally felt the portion was generous and very filling. Oh! And that pickled radish side dish? Total MVP. One bite whenever it gets too rich and it cuts right through.
