Saturday 6pm grilled mackerel dinner in Masan: Masan Ssamjangjip

On a day I really wanted a full Korean set-meal spread in Masan, I went looking for a place with lots of side dishes served generously — and ended up at Ssamjangjip.

From main dishes like the spicy pork set, braised beef rib set, and grilled mackerel set, to about 30 side dishes filling the whole table, this place seemed great for a family meal or dining with parents. !!

We ordered the mackerel set for two that day — ₩17,000 per person, so ₩34,000 for two! To cut to the verdict: it was a "wait, this many side dishes for this price?" kind of spread.

These are the set-menu options, and after some back and forth we went with the mackerel set.

Inside Masan Ssamjangjip: seating and atmosphere

An interior that suits a Korean set-meal restaurant well haha.

The tables are covered with plastic wrap — kind of gives it a raw fish restaurant vibe haha.

They also have alcohol, so it's good for pairing a drink with your meal, and there are high chairs too, so it's a good Daetgeori restaurant to bring a baby to.

What comes with the grilled mackerel set for two and its 30-dish spread?

The grilled mackerel set at Masan Ssamjangjip is ₩17,000 per person, ₩34,000 for two. The side dishes started filling the table one by one until suddenly it was completely packed.

Centered on grilled mackerel and rice, a huge variety of side dishes — namul (seasoned vegetables), kimchi, pickled vegetables, mixed dishes and more — fill the whole table. With so many different dishes, even as two people we had fun each picking our own favorites.

The star of the meal: grilled mackerel. It came out golden brown with a slice of lemon on top. The outside was crispy, and when you pulled the flesh apart, the inside was moist — great piled on warm rice.

The kimchi pancake was also crispy and delicious,

and I was happy there was tofu kimchi too, which I love. What I especially liked was that if you tell the staff a side dish is running low, they'll refill it.

Fresh geotjeori (quick kimchi) isn't hard to make but it's kind of a hassle, so I don't eat it often — having it again after a while really got my appetite going, it was delicious!

And even japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), which my partner loves 🫶🏻 Such a generous spread altogether~~~

Free unlimited Hangang ramyeon at Masan Ssamjangjip

Since there are a lot of customers, it can take a bit of time for the food to come out. If you're feeling peckish while waiting, they offer free Hangang ramyeon (Han River-style instant noodles) you can cook yourself, as many times as you want!!

That said, let's only use it if we're actually going to eat it, so we don't leave bowls with just a bite taken out.

The ramyeon options are Snack Wrap, Yeul Ramyeon, and Jin Ramyeon (mild or spicy).

There's one Hangang ramyeon machine.

We were already full from the meal so we didn't try it, but I thought it was fun that this kind of service even exists.

The self-serve fruit and rice cake dessert corner

After the meal, there's a dessert corner too. Fruit and rice cakes are set out buffet-style so you can help yourself to as much as you want.

The grapes and shine muscat grapes were refreshing and made a great dessert!

Rice → ramyeon → fruit — it really feels like they take care of you all the way to the end!

I think there's also omija tea (five-flavor berry tea) or coffee, but it was gone by the time I left, so I couldn't try it ㅠㅠ

Separate men's and women's restrooms inside

Having separate men's and women's restrooms inside the restaurant is convenient too! And above all, they were clean.

There's hand wash by the sink so you can wash your hands before and after eating, and it smelled nice too~🫧🧼

Visiting Masan Ssamjangjip on a weekend evening: what to know

When we visited Masan Ssamjangjip, it was a weekend evening so there were quite a lot of customers. Past 6pm on Saturday there were clear signs of a wave of diners having just come through — it seems like a lot of people looking for good Daetgeori restaurants come here these days.

During meal times there can be enough of a wait that if you want a relaxed visit, avoiding peak hours might be a good idea. We came at 6pm on Saturday and got seated right away without waiting, but people who came around 7pm afterward were turned away because the kitchen had closed.

If you're looking for a generous Korean set-meal spread in Masan, Ssamjangjip was pretty good! With main dishes, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and a 30-dish spread, you get to try a wide variety of side dishes, plus side dish refills, free Hangang ramyeon, and dessert — a solid, well-rounded meal. Weekends can come with a wait, so I'd recommend visiting early, before the 7pm kitchen close.
