Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu is a seafood shabu jangkalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Jogyang-dong, Sokcho. After booking through Naver Reservation, the writer ordered the wonkiboyang haemul poktan shabu jangkalguksu for two (₩50,000), working through octopus, abalone and scallops, a broth simmered with sanghwang mushroom and hutgae extract, and finishing with house-made noodles. Verdict: if you want to skip the wait, book ahead.

Hangover lunch: chicken jjamppong with soft tofu in Yangyang

Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant in a container building on Namun 6-gil in Yangyang, serving only chicken jjamppong (spicy seafood-style noodle soup) and side jajangmyeon. On a last-minute Yangyang trip, the writer stopped for a hangover lunch before heading back to Seoul, ordering chicken jjamppong noodles, chicken jjamppong rice, and side jajangmyeon, and found the soup topped with soft tofu and chicken to be clean and spicy without any stomach discomfort. The verdict: a definite repeat stop on the next winter Yangyang trip.

Buckwheat gimbap 3 ways near Gangmun Beach, Gangneung: Gossi's

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is an ocean-view makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) and buckwheat gimbap restaurant right across from Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. For the first meal of a summer vacation, the writer ordered three kinds of buckwheat gimbap — spicy pepper, eel, and flying fish roe — plus perilla oil makguksu and buckwheat jeonbyeong, then packed the leftover gimbap home in an ice pack. With 1 hour 30 minutes of free parking at Gangmun Beach's public lots and a dog-friendly 3rd floor, it made a great first stop for a Gangneung trip.

Baegya Coffee is a large ocean-view café right in front of Sacheonjin Beach in Gangneung, spanning from the first floor to a fourth-floor rooftop. After playing on the beach with a child, the writer ordered an Americano, chocolate baguette, and the signature corn ice cream, and every single seat had a sea view, so there was no competition for spots. The terrace and rooftop are no-kids zones, which actually made things easier: families simply use the indoor seating.
