Yangsan bakery café for sopa croissant and airy-cano: Choi Main Branch

Choi Main Branch is a Nakdong River-view bakery café in Hopo, Yangsan, that carries on the same baking as Haewoldang under a new name. On a weekday after lunch the writer and her husband shared the sopa croissant, green onion salt bread and chapssal balls (glutinous rice balls) with an airy-cano and an iced americano, and the airy-cano tasted nutty from the coffee foam even without syrup. With full-height river-view windows on the second floor, Choi Main Branch is an easy Yangsan bakery pick for a quiet coffee date.

Turmeric rice and sanghwang broth loach soup, Milyang: Ilpum Irojeong

Ilpum Irojeong is a South Jeolla-style loach soup (chueotang) restaurant in Milyang, Gyeongnam, a 2-minute drive from Milyang City Hall. After a weekend dawn hike, a couple ordered the signature Boiled Pork + Mackerel Sanghwang Loach Soup Set for two at 18,000 won per person, which came with a rich loach soup simmered in sanghwang mushroom broth with dried radish greens, turmeric rice and two grilled mackerel. The seasoning was gentle rather than salty, so Ilpum Irojeong sat easy afterwards and paired well with a walk to Yeongnamnu Pavilion and Wiyangji Pond.

31 side dishes, cold spicy pork lunch at Masan Ssamjangjip, Changwon

Masan Ssamjangjip is a Korean set-meal restaurant (hanjeongsik) near Daetgeori in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, close to the 3·15 Marine Park. A visit around 1pm meant a 30-minute wait for the spicy pork set, which arrived with 31 side dishes and a free self-serve Hangang ramyeon bar, but the main spicy pork stir-fry wasn't warm and the dessert bar wasn't refilled. Masan Ssamjangjip impresses with the sheer number of sides but leaves something to be desired in its main dish and operations.

Yun Sikdang is a Korean set meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant in Changdong-Bukseong-ro, Changwon. If you love eating lots of different things at one table, this is a place where the price feels almost unfair.

Three naengmyeon names tasted in one visit: Song Giwon, a Jinju

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Modeok-ro in Jinju serving Jinju-style naengmyeon (cold noodles) with a seafood-based broth. Trying all three versions in one visit — water naengmyeon (Sunjo 1800), mixed naengmyeon (Song Giwon 1997), and spicy naengmyeon (Nongae 1593) — showed off the self-made noodles, yukjeon (egg-battered pan-fried beef) topping, and even the vinegar set on every table. First-timers to Jinju naengmyeon should start with the water naengmyeon for its full seafood broth flavor.
