Chewy dumplings and chicken noodle soup in Yangsan: Eonyang Dak

With the seasons changing, I went back after a while to Eonyang Dak Kalguksu, a Tongdosa favorite where a whole half chicken goes into every bowl, to get some body-warming nourishment. I was craving hot broth and came away full and satisfied?! I've gone here on and off for years because you get to enjoy chicken and kalguksu (noodle soup) together, and the Tongdosa branch was really tasty too 🤤

The Yangsan Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa branch had a spacious interior. It's pretty big, so it seemed like a good spot to visit with a group too!!!

Outdoor restrooms are always a hassle, so I was glad this one had the restroom right inside!

Menu and prices, from chicken kalguksu to jjimdak

The main dishes were chicken kalguksu ₩10,000, chicken gomtang (chicken soup) ₩10,000, Eonyang-style kalguksu ₩8,000, spicy braised chicken (gochu jjimdak) ₩27,000, soy braised chicken (ganjang jjimdak) ₩26,000, and chewy dumplings ₩5,500 hahahaha

There were also sides: extra chicken ₩4,000, large portion ₩1,000, rice ₩1,000, soju ₩4,000, beer ₩4,000, and soft drinks ₩2,000!!!! I'd never ordered anything but chicken kalguksu here before, so this was the first time I realized they had jjimdak too — definitely trying it next time!

Self-serve bar: kimchi and spicy chili paste

The self-serve bar has utensils, salt, pickled radish and kimchi! You can choose spicy or mild kimchi — since my stomach wasn't great that day, I went with mild 🌶️

They set out salt for dipping the chicken and kimchi to go alongside. Eonyang Dak Kalguksu is actually known for its kimchi — did you know that ~.~

And for anyone who wants it spicy, there's spicy chili paste and pepper on hand too!

What half-chicken kalguksu and chewy dumplings are like

I ordered two chicken kalguksu and the chewy dumplings, and the sight of it was no joke ヾ(´∀`)ﾉﾞ Glossy dumplings and a whole half chicken sitting right there....!!!

The noodles were chewy yet soft, a perfect match with the broth. So good 🤤

It's great on its own, but eating it with pickled radish and kimchi also worked so well!!!!!

The chicken wasn't dry at all — moist enough to eat together with the noodles :) Rather than being overly seasoned or salty, the milky broth had a savory, clean flavor, which made it a great meal for my unsettled stomach that day!

Chewy dumplings dipped in sweet soy sauce

True to their name, the dumpling wrappers were chewy and springy, satisfying to bite into, while the filling was moist, savory and light.

I kept dipping one after another into the sweet soy sauce and before I knew it, they were all gone........

They're tasty with spicy kimchi too, but since the dumplings themselves are light and delicious, they're great eaten plain as well haha

Is it worth it? A clean-tasting, warming meal

Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch, a clean and light-tasting Tongdosa favorite. They have chicken kalguksu with a whole half chicken inside and Eonyang-style kalguksu with a deep, rich flavor, and I hear the chicken gomtang comes with a half chicken plus rice too!

They also have spicy and soy braised chicken, so it seems like a great choice for a satisfying dinner or as a drinking snack. The broth is savory and made from chicken gomtang stock, so it's not overly seasoned but has real depth, and it left me feeling warmed all the way through.
