Sunday lunch date set with abalone and kimchi pancake: Yun Sikdang

In short

Yun Sikdang is a Korean set meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant in Changdong-Bukseong-ro, Changwon. On a Sunday lunch before a Changdong date, the writer ordered the grilled bulgogi set meal for ₩16,000 per person, and the table filled up with seasoned crab, japchae, abalone in soy sauce (jeonbokjang), grilled mackerel, kimchi pancake, seasoned squid, and a soybean stew with crab, with two refills of lettuce wraps. If you love eating lots of different things at one table, this is a place where the price feels almost unfair.

Full spread of the grilled bulgogi set meal at Yun Sikdang in Changdong, Changwon

Today I'm heading to Changdong in Changwon for a date with my girlfriend. Before hitting Changdong, I looked around for something good to eat. That's how I found this place: Yun Sikdang.

What I had was the grilled bulgogi set meal, ₩16,000 per person. Let's eat first, then take a loop around Changdong.

Where to park for Yun Sikdang

I parked at the Bukmasan Furniture Street public parking lot. Yun Sikdang supports 1 hour of parking there — one parking ticket per table.

Walking over to Yun Sikdang now.

Dongnyeong Fortune Telling House — what kind of place is this? Spotting little things like this while walking is half the fun of wandering around Changdong.

Table setting with tablecloth at Yun Sikdang

Came for Sunday lunch and the place was packed. Seems like everyone in the neighborhood comes here. So many people.

Table setting

A tablecloth like you'd see at a raw fish restaurant. Even the spoons and chopsticks were carefully wrapped. This guy gets moved by little details like that.

From basic side dishes to abalone — the full spread

Hold on. What's going on here. Seasoned crab, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), young radish kimchi, bean sprouts. And back there... abalone in soy sauce? For real?

Looking around, there's just too much to eat. This guy has to eat it all. Whew... let's give it a try. Let's go through it one by one.

Starting with the grilled bulgogi

The main dish, grilled bulgogi, arrives. Grilled bulgogi set meal, ₩16,000 per person. Still plenty more to see.

Grilled fish

Grilled mackerel served as part of the set meal

The mackerel flesh is nice and plump. Have a bite. Come here and have a bite.

Abalone in soy sauce (jeonbokjang)

Abalone in soy sauce (jeonbokjang) side dish

It really was jeonbokjang. Chewy and springy. A total rice thief.

Kimchi pancake

Thin, pan-fried kimchi pancake

This was the kicker for me. A thin, evenly spread kimchi pancake. Whoever fried this — please teach me.

Wait, why does it keep coming

Extra plate of seasoned squid and lettuce wraps

Wait, why does it keep coming. Seasoned squid and lettuce wraps show up too. The squid is sweet and tangy. Wraps can be refilled — I got two refills. Heheh.

Soybean stew

You'd think they could go easy on the soybean stew, but no — it's loaded. Peppers, tofu, clams, crab. This guy eats it all.

A spoonful of white rice with seasoned crab

Eating through the variety of side dishes

Wrap up the mackerel, wrap up the seasoned squid, wrap up the grilled bulgogi, dump the seasoned crab straight onto plain rice — so good. This guy loves eating a bunch of different things at one sitting.

Eating along, it suddenly hits me — how much work must have gone into preparing this whole spread? Moved all over again by the care the owner put into it.

Bonus — what 'extra' actually means here

The 'extra' they mean here isn't about paying more for an extra order. It means if there's something you want more of, you just ask and they bring it. I was already too full to ask for extra. This guy lost.

Table at Yun Sikdang after the meal is finished

Onion Guy's final verdict

What stuck with me most at Yun Sikdang wasn't just the grilled bulgogi alone. Grilled mackerel, abalone in soy sauce, kimchi pancake, wrapped seasoned squid, and soybean stew too. Paying ₩16,000 per person for all this felt almost too good.

And the staff are kind. I'm the type of person whose enjoyment of food doubles when the service is kind. Paying so little, eating this much, and getting good energy from the staff on top of it — is that even allowed? This is a great restaurant. I love it.

A guy who loves eating lots of different things at one table just hit the jackpot.
