Uiwang outlet café power-outlet seats, peanut sandwich: Jeong Jiyoung

Jeong Jiyoung Coffee Roasters Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang Branch is a two-floor café in Uiwang, Gyeonggi, set in a glass-walled building at the end of the outlet's Glass Ville beside a lawn. Visiting alone at 11am on a weekday, the writer took a second-floor seat with a power outlet and worked on blog posts over a decaf flat white (6,500 won) and a peanut sandwich, until food court customers came up and filled the café from 12:30. For quiet laptop work, weekday mornings are the right time at Jeong Jiyoung Coffee Roasters Uiwang.

Hyehwa pub with shrimp gangjeong and gopdori-tang: Hyehwahwa

Hyehwahwa is a Korean pub near Hyehwa Station in Jongno, Seoul, and its signature dish is straw-fire seared spicy gopdori-tang, a hot pot of gopchang and chicken. Arriving just after 6pm on a weekday, the writer found Hyehwahwa nearly full an hour later, and ordered the gopdori-tang at 26,000 won and shrimp gangjeong (sweet crispy fried shrimp) at 15,000 won. The gopchang had no gamey smell at all, and with its open window seats Hyehwahwa is an easy pick for dinner and drinks in Hyehwa.

Beomgye Station bar, corn cheese pancake and Kelly: Bueongi Sanjang

Bueongi Sanjang Beomgye Branch is a Korean-style bar (anju pub) in Anyang, Gyeonggi, a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of Beomgye Station on the second floor of Pyeongchon 1st Street Culture Street. The table at Bueongi Sanjang held gopdoritang (spicy chicken and tripe stew, 31,000 won) and corn cheese pancake (15,000 won) with Kelly beer and yuja ade: the stew's broth grew richer the longer it simmered, and the pancake turned sweet and nutty with condensed milk and injeolmi (sweet rice cake) powder. With wood interiors and group seating, Bueongi Sanjang Beomgye Branch suits a company dinner and a date alike.

Yuil Jangeo is a freshwater eel restaurant that sells direct from its own tanks on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, near Pyeongdong. Urban Slow City is a riverview caravan and glamping campground in Nam-myeon, Chuncheon, facing the Bukhan River. Traveling with another family, we stayed one night in a caravan with bunk beds and an electric mat, added the charcoal and fire-watching set for 35,000 won, and grilled barbecue at sunset before trying the trampoline and water slide. The caravan has its own toilet but showers are in a shared shower house, so bring your own towels and amenities.

Paju Nori Cloud area: kid-friendly jjajangmyeon lunch at Mimi China

Mimi China is a Chinese restaurant on Cheonjeong-guro in Unjeong, Paju, Gyeonggi, about 10 minutes by car from the Paju Nori Cloud playground. On a Sunday lunch with a 6-year-old, one table shared jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) at 8,000 won, sinmi jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) at 12,000 won and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) at 20,000 won, and Mimi China had high chairs and kids' spoons ready. The mildly sweet jjajangmyeon was easy for the child to eat, making Mimi China a handy lunch stop after a Paju Nori Cloud outing.

Bar-table solo lunch at a Dongtan gomtang restaurant: Baekok Dongtan

Baekok Dongtan is a gomtang (Korean beef bone soup) restaurant in the basement 1 food court of Lotte Department Store Dongtan in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. After buying books at Youngpoong Bookstore, the writer ate a solo lunch at the food court bar table with the herbal gomtang set (herbal gomtang, cabbage dumplings and a drink) for 21,000 won, and the broth simmered with neungi mushrooms and milkvetch root was so rich that not a drop of soup or grain of rice was left. Baekok Dongtan is worth recommending as a refuelling meal in the middle of a department store shopping trip.

Pick your own beef cuts at a Jungsan-dong buffet: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch is an all-you-can-eat cypress-steam and shabu-shabu restaurant in Jungsan-dong, Yeongjong, Incheon. Dinner is 20,900 won per adult, and the meal starts with cypress-steamed beef before moving on to shabu-shabu in a half-and-half broth, with usamgyeop (thin-sliced beef belly) and umoksim (beef chuck) laid out separately so you take only the cuts you want. The steamed beef portion is large, so one tray is enough if you still want room for the shabu-shabu.

Jeongju Ilga is a Korean bar (hansik jujeom) at 66 Poeun-ro, 1st floor, in Mangwon-dong, Mapo, Seoul, where Korean dishes are served alongside drinks. Over dinner and drinks with a friend, the writer ordered hanwoo cheese yukhoe (seasoned raw Korean beef with cheese) and janchi guksu (warm noodle soup in light broth), a nutty-and-warm pairing that worked both as a first-round meal and as bar food. Between the window seats with an outdoor-tent feel and the friendly service, Jeongju Ilga is a place worth going back to.

Apgujeong Chinese restaurant with gisu-myeon noodles: Bobo Sikdang

Bobo Sikdang Apgujeong is a Chinese restaurant with private rooms on the first floor of Robin Myeongpumgwan in Apgujeong Rodeo, Gangnam, Seoul. On a booked weekday lunch, the meal was butter tenderloin tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) at 35,000 won, abalone jjajangmyeon at 25,000 won and gisu-myeon (shredded chicken noodle soup) at 16,000 won, with gungchae stem lettuce served in place of the usual pickled radish. Even though the butter is melted and tossed through the sauce, the tangsuyuk stayed crisp to the last piece, scoring 4.6 out of 5.
