Italian restaurant in Jamsil with free 2-hour parking: Mano di Chef

Mano di Chef Jamsil Branch is an Italian restaurant on basement level 1 of Tower730 on Songpa-daero, near Jamsil Station in Songpa, Seoul. On a Sunday lunchtime the writer drove over with her younger sibling and ordered red shrimp bisque linguine (₩33,900), gamtae seaweed pesto and octopus gnocchi (₩31,900), a red grapefruit ade and a stick ice cream. Parking is free for 2 hours, and with a spacious dining room and a separate private room, Mano di Chef Jamsil Branch works just as well for a group gathering as for a relaxed weekend lunch.

Toowoomba pasta and jambon oat risotto in Yeonnam-dong: Hôtel de

Hôtel de Couture is a Western-food restaurant in a Yeonnam-dong alley in Mapo, Seoul, within walking distance of Hongik University Station. Seated by the sunny window, the order came through the table QR code: oat risotto piled with jambon, nutty once the egg yolk is broken and stirred in, and Toowoomba pasta with thick-cut bacon in a rich, creamy sauce. Hôtel de Couture is cozy rather than spacious, which makes it a good stop on a Yeonnam-dong date course.

Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Yuryang Direct Branch is a stir-fried jjukkumi (baby octopus) restaurant on Yangjimal 1-gil in Yuryang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. The spice level is chosen on a tablet from mild, medium or hot, and the mild set came with hot pot rice and shrimp tempura. Seongsu tonkatsu restaurant with high chairs and Mickey dishes: Kosi

Kosi Seongsu Branch is a tonkatsu and udon restaurant in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Ttukseom Station Exit 6. On a daytime outing to Seoul Forest with a baby, the writer ordered fresh pork loin half-and-half katsu at 13,500 won, Sanuki mazeudon at 11,000 won and gyudon at 10,500 won, and the staff brought a high chair and Mickey Mouse baby dishware without being asked. With the baby in a window bar seat watching the street, Kosi Seongsu Branch turned out to be an easy lunch stop for parents.

Euljiro gimbap shop for a Cheonggyecheon picnic with a kid: 29 Tamago

29 Tamago Euljiro Branch is a gimbap (seaweed rice roll) restaurant in Euljiro3-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul, where the keto gimbap is filled with egg instead of rice. For a walk along Cheonggyecheon stream with a 7-year-old, the writer packed three keto rolls from 29 Tamago Euljiro Branch — tuna, chicken breast and carrot rapé — and ate them on a bench. The three flavors were different enough that ordering all at once never got dull, and the pieces were easy to share, making them a good picnic lunch for a day out with a child.

Suji shabu-kalguksu with clear broth and neungi mushroom: Dongchundang

Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Sinbong Oesik Town Branch is a shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Sinbong 1-ro in Suji-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a family visit the writer picked the clear broth, added 160g of beef for 13,000 won and a sanhyang neungi mushroom topping for 5,000 won, then ate through shabu-shabu, kalguksu noodles and a final porridge. The broth at Dongchundang is mild rather than spicy, so adults and children could share the same pot.

Gyeongju lunch-only abalone restaurant: Wando Cham Jeonbokjip

Wando Cham Jeonbokjip is an abalone specialty restaurant on Alcheonnam-ro in Gyeongju, open only from 11am to 3pm. Arriving at 1:30pm after seeing the Gyeongju media art show, the writer ordered the small abalone seafood stew for 31,000 won and abalone porridge for 12,000 won; the stew's sauce never thinned out and the porridge was thick and nutty. Wando Cham Jeonbokjip is also a big takeout spot, with customers driving over from Busan just to pick up an order.

Sushi add-ons and soba at a Jamsil Japanese restaurant: Susi Seon

Susi Seon Bangi Branch is a sushi and Japanese restaurant that has stayed in the same spot in the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul for more than 13 years. The special set brought 10 pieces of sushi with complimentary soba, porridge and jjolmyeon (chewy spicy noodles), and after the rich soba broth was gone came à la carte add-ons of sea urchin, eel, salmon, octopus, scallop, egg and flying fish roe maki. The rice-to-fish ratio at Susi Seon Bangi Branch is spot on and the maki and tako wasabi (octopus with wasabi) are worth ordering, making it an easy recommendation for sushi in Bangi-dong.

Gangneung burger spot with DJ visuals and a golden retriever: Moana

Moana Burger is a handmade burger restaurant on Nanseolheon-ro in Chodang-dong, Gangneung. A family of three ordered the signature Moana Burger and the Moana Double Burger, ate them hot and cooked to order, and spent the rest of the visit playing with Yeoreum, the shop's golden retriever. Between the burgers, the dog and the hip DJ-video atmosphere, Moana Burger is an easy pick for a meal out with a child.

Daeyeon-dong hamburg steak set with soft-boiled egg: Misikga-ui Udon

Misikga-ui Udon Daeyeon Direct Branch is an udon and tonkatsu restaurant right outside Exit 6 of Daeyeon Station in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan. The combo set (udon) brought house-made udon noodles, a whole tonkatsu cutlet and curry rice, while the hamburg steak set came topped with a soft-boiled egg, and a self-serve coffee machine and parking stamp waited by the door. Draft beer and soju at 1,990 won make Misikga-ui Udon a lunch spot by day and an izakaya at night.
