Jeju rice cake shop for shaved-ice topping omegi-tteok: Suragan

In short

Suragan Tteokbang is an omegi-tteok (rice cake) shop near Jeju Airport and Dongmun Market in Jeju City. The writer picked up 20 pieces just before closing time, tasting tangerine, black sesame, mugwort, whole red bean, and nut flavors, then had omegi-tteok, pumpkin injeolmi, and black rice nutrition rice cake shipped to her parents. Frozen storage plus 30 seconds in the microwave — even sliced onto shaved ice — made it a solid pick for a Jeju gift.

Why I picked omegi-tteok as a Jeju gift for my parents

You know that dilemma when you're leaving Jeju and can't decide what souvenir to bring your parents? My dad really loves omegi-tteok (a chewy Jeju rice cake), so this time I wanted to skip the usual snacks and bring back proper, delicious omegi-tteok. That's how I found Suragan Tteokbang, known among locals as an omegi-tteok favorite. It's near Jeju Airport and close to Dongmun Market too, so it was easy to stop by on the last day of the trip. If I had to rank the omegi-tteok places I've tried in Jeju, this one is truly number one!

Reserved pickup right before closing

It's close to the airport and also near Dongmun Market, which made it perfect to stop by on the last day of the trip. I arrived right before closing, so I just quickly picked up the rice cakes I had reserved. Walking into the shop, I saw so many steaming baskets lined up neatly. It looked like they make plenty of other rice cakes besides omegi-tteok too, so I wanted to come back a little earlier next time.

An omegi-tteok favorite near Dongmun Market

I picked up the rice cakes for my own home myself, and had the ones for Udoryeong's parents sent by courier.

Five flavors in the box of 20

I bought the box of 20, and it came with a good mix of flavors. Tangerine, black sesame, mugwort, whole red bean, and nuts — five in total, so it was fun picking one after another to try.

The texture is really soft and stretchy. This is exactly the kind of omegi-tteok texture I love — chewy without being too tough, and delicious.

I'm a total rice cake fiend, so honestly I meant to save them for home, but I couldn't hold out — I ate one right after pickup, another before boarding the plane, and yet another once I got home haha.

You'd think eating it over and over would get old, but the soft, chewy, stretchy texture is exactly what I love in omegi-tteok, so I just kept going.

A Jeju gift recommendation

By the end of a Jeju trip, you're always stressing over what gift to bring.

Peanut snacks or chocolate are common picks, but if you ask me for a Jeju souvenir recommendation for parents, omegi-tteok is really solid too. My own parents loved it right away.

Freezer storage and 30 seconds in the microwave

Since Suragan Tteokbang doesn't add any preservatives, they told me it really, really needs to go straight into the freezer. That's probably why they include an ice pack too! I picked mine up on the day I flew home from Jeju and put it straight in the freezer the moment I got in. The next day, when I wanted some, 30 seconds in the microwave made it taste just like freshly made rice cake.

Nationwide courier delivery for omegi-tteok, pumpkin injeolmi, and black rice nutrition rice cake

If you're carrying a lot of luggage, you don't necessarily have to lug rice cakes onto the plane. I ordered the ones for Udoryeong's parents by courier. I sent omegi-tteok along with pumpkin injeolmi (a chewy rice cake coated in bean powder) and black rice nutrition rice cake, and they said the pumpkin injeolmi was really delicious too.

Having tasted the texture of the omegi-tteok, I can already imagine what the pumpkin injeolmi is like — chewy and stretchy, exactly the kind of rice cake I love. Online ordering is available too, so if you'd rather not deal with heavy luggage, courier delivery is convenient. I ordered in the afternoon and received it two days later, but if you order early on a weekday morning, next-day delivery seems possible. So it seems like a good option not just for parents but for holiday gifts too.

How to enjoy omegi-tteok

Sliced omegi-tteok arranged on a plate

Back home, I sliced it up properly to eat, and the next day, while having shaved ice, I cut some omegi-tteok and put it on top. You know this combo can't possibly taste bad, right? Chewy omegi-tteok in cold shaved ice tastes completely different from eating it plain.

Omegi-tteok used as a topping on shaved ice

Cutting up small pieces of the different flavors and layering them on top felt like picking toppings for shaved ice — really fun. If you don't want to agonize over a Jeju gift until the last minute, I think omegi-tteok from Suragan Tteokbang is a solid choice. It's near Jeju Airport, so it's easy to stop by at the end of a trip, and convenient to pick up after browsing Dongmun Market.

Above all, having eaten it myself, the rice cake itself was soft and chewy and delicious, and my parents' reaction sealed the deal. So if you've been looking for an omegi-tteok place near Jeju Airport, or a Jeju rice cake shop that locals actually go to, I'd say give Suragan Tteokbang a try. Next time, I'm not just buying omegi-tteok — I'm getting the pumpkin injeolmi too.
