Jeju café for colorful dol hareubang madeleine tasting: Today Jeju

Before heading home, I stopped by Today Jeju while looking for a special dessert you can only find in Jeju. The Jeju-inspired shapes caught my eye right away, and they looked like great gifts too.

Going by the address, I thought it would be inside Shilla Duty Free Shop, but it is actually in a separate spot behind the building. I wandered around a little at first because I could not find the entrance, but just head around to the back of Shilla Duty Free Shop and you will find it.

A shop with the feel of a Jeju souvenir store

As soon as I stepped inside, the bright, cheerful atmosphere caught my eye. The orange-toned interior, together with the cute Jeju-inspired madeleines, made it feel exactly like a Jeju travel souvenir shop. They were colorful, and every single shape was adorable, so naturally I kept looking.

What do the dol hareubang madeleines look like?

Up close, the madeleines were even cuter. They looked as if dol hareubang, Jeju’s iconic stone grandfather statues, had been turned directly into cakes, and each one had a different color, which made them fun to look at. These desserts really captured the Jeju mood, with a charm quite different from an ordinary madeleine.

It was fun looking around every corner of the shop too. Along with the madeleines, there were Jeju-themed goods to browse, and everything was arranged so you could take your time choosing according to the recipient or your taste. Before I knew it, I had spent ages deciding what to take home 😂

Finally, I completed my purchase with a set I loved! They packed it neatly in an orange shopping bag, so I walked out feeling happy with it in hand.

What is in the Harubangne 8-flavor set?

The one I chose was the Harubangne 8-flavor set. It included eight different flavors: hallabong, matcha, carrot, prickly pear, Earl Grey, black sesame, chocolate, and fig. When I opened the box, colorful dol hareubang were lined up inside, and they were so cute.

The storage instructions were clearly written inside the box, which was convenient since I did not need to look them up separately. Each madeleine was individually wrapped, making them easy to store too. I also liked that the set was not limited to one flavor, so I could try each variety one by one. They were all the same dol hareubang shape, but the color changed slightly with each flavor, which made comparing them fun.

How were the hallabong and matcha flavors?

I started with the hallabong and matcha flavors I was most curious about. One bite in, they were soft and moist, so I found myself reaching for more than I expected. The hallabong had a delicate fresh citrus aroma, while the matcha was gently bittersweet and sweet, making it easy to enjoy without feeling heavy.

I meant to try just one, but before I knew it, I had no idea how many I had eaten, haha. Even after getting home from the trip, it was such a treat to take out and eat the Jeju desserts one at a time 😆
