Mixing mint choco and mango at a Konkuk ice cream shop: Beurre Beurre

In short

Beurre Beurre Konkuk University Rodeo Branch is a premium butter ice cream shop in Gwangjin, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 6 of Konkuk University Station. On a Sunday evening walk the writer took out a single Mint Choco Prince (₩4,700) and a double Mellow Mango + Oh! Lemonzy (₩6,500) and mixed the flavors: mint with lemon turned bitter and failed, while mint with mango was only so-so. Mellow Mango was the tastiest scoop of the day at Beurre Beurre.

ⓒ Something about REILA

Last Sunday I was out for a walk nearby, had dinner with my boyfriend, and on the way home I suddenly got a huge craving for something sweet haha. And then Beurre Beurre just caught my eye?! I'd seen it a few times passing through Seongsu, and I heard they opened a branch in Konkuk too, so I thought, oh, I have to try this — and went in!

The Beurre Beurre storefront and the Goodbye Summer event

The exterior really catches your eye~ Something like an authentic American style, and at night the neon signs make it stand out even more!

They're also running a 'Goodbye Summer' event. The Quadruple, which lets you try 4 flavors, was on a limited-time promotion from ₩18,900 down to ₩16,900.

Inside Beurre Beurre: can you eat your ice cream there?

Compact store interior with tables

Since Beurre Beurre Konkuk University Rodeo Branch is an ice cream shop that's mainly about takeout, the interior is on the compact side~ Still, there are tables, so you can definitely eat in without packing it to go!! We took ours to go since we were on our way home anyway!!

You order at a kiosk. Being a hot spot in Konkuk, Beurre Beurre even offers foreign language service... oh.

Sign for cup bingsu and other café menu items

There are other café menu items besides ice cream~ There was also a cup bingsu (shaved ice) topped with ice cream, and it all looked delicious!

A premium butter base, with free tastings before you choose

Apparently all the ice cream is on a premium butter base. They say they only use French butter with 82% milk fat, and maybe that's why it looks so thick and creamy~ Everything looked delicious so it was hard to choose, but if you're struggling, you can ask for a taste! Since I'm on Team Mint Choco (well, more precisely Team Mint... I don't love chocolate...), I picked the single-size Mint Choco Prince, and my boyfriend went for double-size Oh! Lemonzy + Mellow Mango :D

Single Mint Choco Prince, ₩4,700: peppermint-forward with winning chocolate shards

Beurre Beurre's Mint Choco Prince single is ₩4,700. Even though I'm on Team Mint, I'll be honest — this is peppermint, not spearmint, so the mint flavor was very strong right off the bat~ (toothpaste vibes...) Anyone who loves that cooling sensation, gather here now!! But I liked the chocolate haha. Instead of finely crushed chips, the chocolate is in bar form, so it stays in your mouth with a satisfying chew and tastes much richer~ A pass even for me, who doesn't like chocolate!!!

Double cup of Mellow Mango and Oh! Lemonzy

Double Mellow Mango + Oh! Lemonzy, ₩6,500

The double was Mellow Mango and Oh! Lemonzy for ₩6,500. I get why Mellow Mango is a BEST — melon and mango flavors come through lightly without being overdone, and the butter base leaves a rich, creamy finish. This was the best one I had that day. It hits that sweet-tooth spot without getting sickly!!

Close-up of the refreshing Oh! Lemonzy ice cream

Oh! Lemonzy was refreshing~ Not an artificial lemon flavor but a real fruity lemon taste!!! And since it's butter ice cream rather than sorbet, it's not actually sherbet, right? But it did have a slight sherbet-like feel, so it was the lightest and had the softest texture haha.

Mixing Mint Choco Prince with another flavor

What happened when the Mint Choco Prince was mixed with the other flavors

Since Mint Choco Prince has such a strong mint flavor, I figured mixing it with another flavor might balance it out, so I gave it a try lol

  • Mint Choco Prince + Oh! Lemonzy = fail lol. The cooling mint and the lemon's tartness met and weirdly a bitter taste came right up~ Guess lemon mint just doesn't work... haha
  • Mint Choco Prince + Mellow Mango = not bad. Mellow Mango's softness and sweetness tone down the mint, so the balance isn't perfect, but it kind of works.

So mint choco fans, you have to try Beurre Beurre!!

One drawback at Beurre Beurre: ask in advance if you want a cone

Oh, and one thing that bugged me a little! At the counter I misheard the staff asking if a 'single cup' was fine as just a size check, so it came in a cup instead. But I wanted a cone!! If you want a cone, don't forget to say so when ordering!! Or I'd recommend ordering at the kiosk instead!
