Two-box dakgangjeong takeout near Guui Station: Mr. Kim's Chicken
In short
Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch is a dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites) and old-style whole fried chicken restaurant between gates 4 and 5 of Jayang Market in Gwangjin, Seoul. A medium-spicy special dakgangjeong and a medium fried chicken, boxed together, stayed crispy even after a 40-50 minute trip home, with the fried version pairing well with beer and the seasoned version pairing well with rice. Two boxes together cost about ₩20,000-something, enough for a single-person household to eat over two days.

Jyoni here, I love touring markets :) Came to Guui-dong and stopped by Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch, the dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites) spot in Jayang Market — here's my review

Between gates 4 and 5 of Jayang Market — the vibe
Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch sits between gates 4 and 5 of Jayang Market. A great pick near Guui Station if you want to do chimaek (chicken and beer) in a nice cool space with draft beer. Like Jyoni, plenty of customers were taking out, but others were eating in too — a real local favorite in Jayang Market.

The dakgangjeong is pre-fried once, then fried again fresh and hot as soon as the order comes in. Besides the dakgangjeong Jyoni ordered, they also sell old-style whole fried chicken with its charmingly thin crust, chicken by parts, and crispy savory fried gizzards :) All the chicken is domestic, so it felt extra trustworthy — a solid Guui-dong pick.

Nostalgic little wooden skewers for the dakgangjeong lol. They also gave plenty of salt for dipping the fried chicken, which was nice
Mr. Kim's Chicken started in a Myeonmok-dong market and has spread to markets all across Seoul, well-rated wherever it goes

Dakgangjeong fried, medium — peppery, salty base flavor
Dakgangjeong fried, medium size. Unlike regular fried chicken, dakgangjeong has its own thick crust with a hint of spicy pepper and a salty base flavor
It was already well-seasoned even without any sauce, so it was easy to pick up piece by piece~ Clean oil and good-quality ingredients made it taste even better — a real Jayang Market favorite from Mr. Kim's Chicken

Still crispy 40–50 minutes after packing?
For Jyoni it took about 40-50 minutes to get home after packing, but it wasn't soggy at all — totally crispy~ The crust had that thick, nostalgic dakgangjeong texture from childhood, plus savory chicken, so it wasn't greasy and tasted great

No gamey or off smell from the chicken, just savory and clean — the portion is so generous it never seems to run out. Would be great for a whole family to grab takeout dakgangjeong from Jayang Market for a weekend meal

The chewy, savory fried rice cake skewers you only get with dakgangjeong were amazing too. They're open late on weekdays and weekends, so this Guui-dong spot is great for grabbing takeout as a late-night snack on the way home from work

Great paired with cold draft beer in-store, but also highly recommended for taking out and drinking solo at home like Jyoni did. Anyone heading to Ttukseom Resort or the Han River could also grab some from Jayang Market for a picnic

Two boxes together, still about ₩20,000-something
These days, ordering from a fried chicken specialty shop can easily run past ₩28,000 for one whole chicken, but at Mr. Kim's Chicken in Jayang Market, this generous a spread came to about ₩20,000-something!!

Dakgangjeong seasoned, medium spicy special — where on the 3-level scale?
Dakgangjeong seasoned, medium spicy, special size. This seasoned dakgangjeong tastes even better eaten together with the fried version

A sweet-and-spicy seasoned dakgangjeong made with Mr. Kim's Chicken's own special ratio. The sauce comes in three spice levels~ from mild, which even little kids can enjoy, to medium spicy (a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun), up to hot (spicier than Buldak Bokkeum Myeon)
The dakgangjeong is fried fresh right when you order, then tossed in the sauce, so the crispiness stays alive — so good

Jyoni loves spicy food so I ordered medium spicy, and it tasted like a mix of hot and mild in equal parts — just the right level of sweet-and-spicy, which I liked. The glossy shine on the seasoned dakgangjeong looked great, and it paired perfectly with rice too

Fried or seasoned — which to pick?
It's not tongue-burning spicy, just nicely spicy in a way most people would enjoy regardless of preference. If I had to choose between fried and seasoned, seasoned was a bit tastier~ Go fried if you want it with cold beer, seasoned if you want it with rice — highly recommend

Eating the chewy, savory fried rice cake skewers together with the chicken made for a perfectly balanced meal of protein, carbs and fat — recommend this Guui Station spot, Mr. Kim's Chicken. The portion is so generous that a single-person household could easily eat a medium size over two days
Great for a whole family to eat out affordably, and also perfect for taking out to the Han River or Children's Grand Park for a picnic — recommend Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch. The friendly owner runs it with real care, so if you're craving chicken, take a stroll around Jayang Market in Guui-dong and do chimaek at Mr. Kim's Chicken :) A Guui Station favorite, within 11 minutes of the station
