Oranda and gwajul found inside Jeju Dongmun Market

As I walked near Gate 2 or 9 of Jeju Dongmun Market, a neat, welcoming sign with a yellow background caught my eye.

Even amid the market's lively atmosphere, the tidy storefront made it easy to spot.

Stepping inside, the nutty, sweet aroma pleasantly tickled my nose.

The space farther inside was much more hygienic and systematically maintained than I had expected. Boxes of carefully packaged oranda and gwajul were stacked neatly on one display shelf, making them fun to browse.

Gift-box styles and bojagi (traditional Korean wrapping cloth) wrapping samples were also displayed neatly, so it was easy to choose something suited to the recipient's taste.

Trying the nutty oranda and gwajul

There is always a lot to think about when heading home after a Jeju trip or wanting to show someone you care. The nutty oranda and gwajul I bought this time were easy to give, yet full of thoughtfulness.

Nutty oranda and gwajul gift snacks

Lots of people look for snacks while exploring the market, and I was happy to find such proper gift desserts at Jeju Dongmun Market.

Nutty oranda that was moist rather than hard

First, the nutty oranda was completely different from the hard, tooth-sticking old-fashioned gangjeong (Korean puffed-grain confection) I had imagined. It was coated with jocheong (rice syrup) in just the right proportion, making the texture truly soft and moist. The crisp bite that gently melted away in my mouth was memorable.

Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, and other nuts were packed between the pieces of oranda, so nutty flavor popped with every bite. It was not overly sweet, just nicely sweet, with a flavor that both children and older adults could enjoy. The individual wrapping was neat and convenient for storage, and perfect for taking out one at a time during a trip.

Crisp and chewy gwajul

The gwajul I bought alongside it also exceeded my expectations. With the subtle flavor of Jeju specialties, it had an appealing signature texture: crisp on the outside and chewy within.

The combination of nutty puffed rice on the outside and sweet jocheong was excellent, with the kind of addictive quality that kept me reaching for another piece.

It was light and clean-tasting without any greasy feel, making it ideal as a dessert alongside tea or coffee.

Neat gift wrapping and parking

The packaging was very neat, too. Once placed in a gift box, it looked clean and refined, with a level of finish that would make the recipient feel good.

Neatly boxed gift packaging

Among the many local specialties available in Jeju, these were snacks with broad appeal and excellent value, so I was very satisfied. With flavor, texture, and hygienic packaging all in place, they were a fine choice for a Jeju Dongmun Market gift list.

This was a specialty handmade-snack shop with a perfect balance of soft texture and nutty flavor.

Since it is located inside Dongmun Market, it is convenient to use the nearby Dongmun Market Public Parking Lot or street parking.

I was happy to find thoughtfully made snacks in a traditional market that is great to stop by during a Jeju trip. The soft, not-hard oranda and crisp gwajul are wonderfully suited to giving as easy, no-pressure gifts.
