Rooftop café in Danyang with garlic-shaped ice cream: JB Coffee

In short

JB Coffee is a two-story rooftop café on Byeolgok12-gil in Danyang-eup, Chungbuk. Its new dessert, Maneulinjularatdanyang (garlic-shaped ice cream), comes in banana, melon and strawberry at 10,000 won each, and all three were ordered and eaten at a rooftop seat with espresso poured over the top. The sherbet-textured ice cream only looks like garlic, making JB Coffee a good fit for anyone after an offbeat dessert in Danyang, Korea's garlic city.

Garlic-shaped ice cream at JB Coffee in Danyang

A few days ago I took an impromptu trip to Danyang🏕️ True to its title as the city of garlic, every restaurant, café, and market stall seemed to have garlic in something — and when I heard there was even garlic ice cream, I ran straight to JB Coffee~~

Wait, is this actually garlic...? It was such a genuinely unique menu item haha

It ended up being an unforgettable ice cream. Let's go with my honest review of JB Coffee, a recommended Danyang café.

Open, airy 1st-floor interior of JB Coffee

Even though it's indoors, the café felt open and airy, almost like an outdoor space — very pleasant.

Covered outdoor tables at JB Coffee

Once you go inside there are also outdoor tables. There's a cover overhead, so it's a great spot to chat whether the weather's nice or it's raining.

2nd-floor rooftop space at JB Coffee

The second-floor rooftop is JB Coffee's best feature

This recommended Danyang café feels like a standalone house, and that's why there's this 2nd-floor rooftop space — this is the café's real kick. The inner part of the 2nd floor is indoors, while the outer part can be enjoyed as a rooftop. There are even camping-style tables, which would be especially perfect on a rainy day.

JB Coffee menu and the price of the garlic-shaped ice cream

The menu lineup was genuinely diverse — coffee, lattes, smoothies, ades, tea, even bingsu (shaved ice dessert). A place like this feels like it needs at least two visits.

JB Coffee menu board

After some deliberating, since we'd come all the way to Danyang, the city of garlic, we decided to try the new menu item, Maneulinjularatdanyang ("I thought it was garlic"). But every flavor looked like something I wanted to try, so after more deliberating we ordered one each of banana, melon, and strawberry. It's ₩10,000 each.

Garlic-shaped ice cream set on a rooftop table

There wasn't a single cloud in the sky that day~ so we grabbed a rooftop seat haha. The view looking out from inside was so clear, it's a shame it doesn't come through in photos ㅠㅠ

There were a lot of figurines on both the 1st and 2nd floors — if you're into figurines in Danyang, this café is worth a visit. With so much variety, I wasn't bored at all while waiting.

Three-flavor Maneulinjularatdanyang set

The three-flavor Maneulinjularatdanyang set >< Seriously, isn't this garlic?? The thing sitting at the bottom is genuinely garlic in both color and shape.

A mountain view mingled with garlic,, makes me want to go back to Danyang.

How to eat it: pour the espresso, then crack the garlic with the stick

After taking pretty pictures, I came back to the table to get ready to eat the ice cream. You pour an espresso shot over the top of the ice cream, and unlike a regular affogato, it doesn't melt fast or drip everywhere, which I really liked. Once it all melts, it just becomes a latte anyway,, You stick the long stick the owner gave us into the center of the ice cream, then scrape at it with a spoon~

Strawberry-flavor ice cream cracked open with a stick

It was oddly fun to crack it apart lol. The texture is like sherbet, so it wasn't heavy and had a clean, refreshing taste. The strawberry flavor was exactly the delicious strawberry flavor we all know! Even though it's shaped like garlic and has garlic in the name, this ice cream is only garlic-shaped, not garlic-flavored! Hence the name Maneulinjularatdanyang — basically "thought it was garlic, didn't you~" haha

Banana-flavor garlic-shaped ice cream with white chocolate

Banana flavor

This one's banana flavor — blended banana and ice frozen into a garlic shape? At the bottom there's garlic-shaped white chocolate too. The chocolate had a slightly jelly-like texture,, one that doesn't melt easily?

Melon-flavor garlic-shaped ice cream

Melon flavor

This one's melon flavor~ personally, melon was my favorite! haha I love melon anyway~ it felt even better than a Melona bar! haha

Verdict: an offbeat dessert stop in Danyang

If you're looking for a café in Danyang, JB Coffee with its unique menu is worth a visit at least once! In particular, Maneulinjularatdanyang has a different charm from bingsu, and it also works well as a palate cleanser after a meal.
