6 hours after takeout, still crispy: Danyang Heukmaneul dakgangjeong
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a black garlic dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop inside Danyang Gugyeong Market in Chungbuk. Two boxes of the double black garlic flavor (20,000 won each) and two bottles of black garlic makgeolli (10,000 won) were taken away and eaten 6 hours later, and the chicken was still crisp rather than soggy, which the writer's parents especially enjoyed. A good pick in Danyang for a local specialty gift or a late-night snack back at your accommodation.

A review of the Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong I packed to go a few days ago on a trip to Danyang — my parents especially loved this one. You can't skip a market visit on a trip, and this black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong (rice-crust fried chicken) place is a well-known local favorite at Danyang's Gugyeong Market.

Is the chicken still crispy 6 hours after pickup?
I ended up eating it 6 hours after pickup, and I was surprised it was still crispy. The box wasn't even vented to let steam out, yet it hadn't gone soggy at all — kind of amazing, honestly.

With wedge potatoes, fried lotus root, and nurungji mixed in, the flavors were nicely varied too.

True to its reputation as a garlic town, the market even has a garlic alley! I genuinely never knew garlic could smell this good.

Danyang Gugyeong Market isn't huge, so it's easy to walk the whole thing in one go. Finding the Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong shop was easy too!
Original or double black garlic: which box to order?
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong has two menu items: black garlic original and black garlic double flavor. Both are ₩20,000. The original minimizes the garlic taste and comes with garlic chips on the side, while the double flavor is said to have a strong black garlic aroma you can only get in Danyang.

Rather than just garlic topping on top,

since I was in Danyang, famous for black garlic, I went with the double flavor. Standing in front of the shop, the smell was so good I bought two boxes — one extra for my parents. This Gugyeong Market favorite, Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong, seems like something older folks would love even more.

Maybe because it's such a well-known dakgangjeong spot at Gugyeong Market, they were roasting the nurungji fresh on a machine right in front of the shop, and the toasty smell was everywhere.
A visual that makes you want to dig right in..! It looked like it'd be crispy and delicious even eaten on its own, haha.

Black garlic makgeolli on the side, 2 bottles for 10,000 won
Bringing just chicken to my parents' place felt a little plain(?), so I also grabbed some black garlic makgeolli. It's ₩10,000 for 2 bottles. The packaging looked classy too, perfect for a gift. It can sit at room temperature for about a day, so I could pack it without worry on a hot summer day (refrigerate after that).
The black garlic makgeolli tasted more smooth than sharp or fizzy — surprisingly mild for something with 'black garlic' in the name, so my mom liked it more than my dad, haha. It pairs really well with the dakgangjeong, so I'd recommend it.
Packing complete~

Looking back, it's wild that there wasn't even a steam vent hole, yet it wasn't soggy at all.

Seems like a brand started by young people researching garlic dishes. They also do nationwide courier delivery. My mom and sister said it was so good they wanted to order more by delivery, but they decided to hold off since they'd rather go to Danyang and eat it fresh, haha.

What the double black garlic flavor really tastes like, and who may not like it
The double black garlic looks sticky in photos, but it really isn't. It's soft and crispy, and there's not a drop of oily residue left, so it eats clean. Yet the meat isn't dry either — is this some kind of technique? I had to wonder.
Visually it looks like it's coated in syrup or malt syrup, but despite that, it doesn't stick to your teeth at all, so you can eat it really smoothly. Is this the technique? The black garlic flavor is strong but tastes like well-fermented garlic, so I think most people would like it. That said, since the black garlic flavor is intense, people who can't handle strong flavors might prefer the basic nurungji dakgangjeong instead.

Not a single crumb — every piece is solid, meaty chicken.

Not a huge amount, but the potato and nurungji pieces mixed in are a nice little treat, haha.
My first trip to Danyang was already great thanks to good weather, but Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong, the Gugyeong Market favorite, made the city even more memorable. It's a great place to check out and a great Danyang specialty to try, so anyone traveling to Danyang should definitely stop by..! 100% would visit again — that's the Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong post, done!
