Today I want to introduce a clean, filling hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) spot I stumbled on by chance in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, and honestly, I was so satisfied.
I'd been looking for somewhere good for solo dining lately, a place where I could enjoy a neat, well-put-together spread, and I found exactly what I wanted. It's the place known as a Daemyeong-dong favorite — Cafe Dongi.

Inside Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch: seating and how tablet ordering works
Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a hanjeongsik restaurant on Daemyeongbokgae-ro 4-gil in Nam-gu, Daegu, and the exterior's clean interior design immediately caught my curiosity.
Once inside, I found the ordering system was well set up so you could comfortably order through a tablet (hi-order).

Looking at the menu, there were various solo table sets prepared, so it was easy to pick according to taste.
What Cafe Dongi is known for: rice, tangsuyuk and open-flame dishes
Rice made with carefully selected ingredients and health in mind — good rice and filtered water: they use only premium-grade Gimpo geumssal rice milled within 14 days, and cook it with clean filtered water, setting the base rice flavor apart, they say.
- Unlimited refills of healthy five-grain rice: the five-grain rice provided as a base can be refilled endlessly via the self-service bar, they say.
- Dongi nuruk-aged tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork): a signature menu item that reportedly earns praise beyond even dedicated Chinese restaurants despite being a Korean restaurant. It's aged with traditional rice nuruk (fermentation starter), rich in lactic acid bacteria and amino acids, uses no flour at all (gluten-free) so it sits easy on the stomach, and is fried in clean oil monitored daily with acid value test strips.
- Jikhwa (open-flame) dishes: stir-fried quickly at 300 degrees, the standouts are jikhwa jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and seokgalbi (stone-grilled ribs), which keep the smoky char, crisp vegetable texture, and juices intact.
- A cafe-like, comfortable atmosphere: true to its name, it moves away from the typical plain look of Korean restaurants, with a pretty, trendy interior where anyone, any age, can feel good staying a while.
- Reasonable solo tables and brazier hanjeongsik: from neat solo-table formats that solo diners can enjoy without pressure, to 1-person braziers and generous large-set spreads, there's a range of choices.
- Self-service bar: depending on the branch, they run a self-bar offering fried eggs, barley gangjeong, extra rice, and more, freely available, which raises satisfaction.
What comes with the 1-Person Brazier Dongi Jikhwa Bulgogi Hanjeongsik Table
After some deliberation, I ordered Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch's signature menu, the '1-Person Brazier Dongi Jikhwa Bulgogi Hanjeongsik Table,' along with a tasting portion of tangsuyuk to enjoy alongside it, crispy and good for pairing.
A little while later, the food arrived neatly arranged on a solo tray, and the visual alone drew an admiring reaction.
On the warm brazier sat appetizing jikhwa bulgogi full of smoky char, topped generously with fresh baby greens that added to the depth of flavor. There wasn't a hint of gamey smell from the meat, just a subtle smokiness woven through — perfect for whetting the appetite.
Alongside it came a hearty, rich, spicy kimchi jjigae, three neat side dishes, and rice, all served together as a tidy set, and it honestly made me feel well taken care of.

How was the tasting portion of tangsuyuk?
The tasting portion of Cafe Dongi's tangsuyuk that I ordered as a side was also quite the delicacy.
Freshly fried, the batter was very crispy while the inside stayed moist — a textbook example of crispy-outside, tender-inside.

Dipped into the accompanying sauce, the sweet-and-tangy flavor blended beautifully with the crispy texture, pairing wonderfully with the bulgogi hanjeongsik too. The portion was just right for a side dish, not overwhelming at all, and I was glad I ordered it.
Is Cafe Dongi worth it for a solo meal in Daemyeong-dong?
Thanks to the individual brazier, I could enjoy the food warm down to the very last bite, and more than anything, the system of serving each diner a neat individual tray made the meal feel hygienic and comfortable.
If you're looking for a thoughtfully prepared meal near Daemyeong-dong, or a clean hanjeongsik spot that's good for solo dining, be sure to visit Cafe Dongi. You'll be able to fully enjoy a hearty, satisfying meal!
