Danyang restaurant for a family lunch with parents: Heukmaneul Boribap
In short
Heukmaneul Boribap is a Korean restaurant near Danyang Market in Chungbuk that serves barley rice set meals built around Danyang's local specialty, garlic — black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) and bossam (boiled pork). For a family trip lunch with parents, we ordered the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set together with bossam and got a full table of namul-bibim barley rice, ssam vegetables and doenjang jjigae in a stone pot. With namul, meat and soup all on one table, Heukmaneul Boribap suits a family whose tastes don't match.

If you want a locally flavored Korean meal near Danyang Market, Heukmaneul Boribap (흑마늘보리밥) is a great lunch pick. Bossam and jeyuk made with black garlic come out alongside barley rice loaded with namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) — a satisfying spread for a family trip meal.

What made things easiest was being right near Danyang Market, so we could browse the market and eat in one go! This place is actually the second branch of Danyang's well-known Heukmaneul Ssambap, run under the concept 'Black Garlic Ssambap, Second Story.'

We visited during a family trip and ordered the black garlic jeyuk barley rice together with bossam — the table filled up with barley rice, namul, ssam vegetables, and doenjang jjigae, which worked well for eating as a family. If you're touring Danyang and thinking 'I want a proper meal, not just garlic bread or dakgangjeong,' this one's worth noting.
Where is Heukmaneul Boribap in Danyang?

Heukmaneul Boribap is a Korean restaurant located close to Danyang Market. It's positioned so you can easily walk over for a meal after browsing the market, making it easy to combine the market visit and lunch into one course.

As the name suggests, this second branch centers its menu around black garlic and barley rice. It's notable for building a full table around Danyang's specialty garlic, paired with barley rice, namul, and jeyuk/bossam.
Heukmaneul Boribap menu and what comes on the table
Heukmaneul Boribap's signature menu is largely split into the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set and the black garlic bossam barley rice set. Instead of picking just one, we ordered so we could try both jeyuk and bossam together.

Once everything arrived, a big plate of jeyuk, bossam, barley rice, doenjang jjigae, and a whole lineup of namul and side dishes packed the table. My first thought the moment the spread landed: "This is way more generous than I expected!"

Several side dishes come out specifically for mixing into the barley rice — bean sprouts, carrots, green namul, bracken, and more — so it never felt like eating just one thing on repeat. Ssam vegetables, garlic, and ssamjang (seasoned dipping paste) were also set out separately, so we could wrap the jeyuk or bossam in lettuce too.
Tasting the black garlic jeyuk and bossam barley rice sets

Mixing the barley rice with plenty of namul
We started with the barley rice properly. Rather than just eating it plain, the way to go is to pile the namul on one type at a time, add a generous amount of gochujang seasoning, and mix it all together.

The distinctive chewy pop of barley rice combined with the crunch of bean sprouts and the earthy flavor of the namul made for a genuinely fun texture!

The gochujang seasoning added a real punch of savory depth to what could otherwise be plain barley rice, but it wasn't too spicy or intense, so my parents ate it comfortably too.

Black garlic jeyuk: the dish that keeps the rice going
The jeyuk came with a deep, rich seasoning and plenty of onion, green onion, and vegetables mixed in! It looked glossy and shiny, and eating it, the sweet-salty sauce paired really well with the barley rice. It's good on top of the mixed barley rice, and just as good wrapped in lettuce or perilla leaf. Since the bibimbap itself is fairly plain, I found the balance improved a lot once I added the well-seasoned jeyuk.

Black garlic bossam: the garlic sauce is the highlight
Trying the bossam was definitely worth it! The bossam itself had a nice balance of fat, keeping it moist, and it was topped generously with a black garlic-based sauce. I expected the pungency of raw garlic, but it was actually more on the sweet, savory side.

A single piece of bossam was already delicious on its own, but wrapping it in perilla leaf with the mixed barley rice, bossam, garlic sauce, and extras made for a much richer bite.

Stone-pot doenjang jjigae completes the spread
On the side, a stone-pot doenjang jjigae came out too. It had plenty of tofu and vegetables in it, and it was nice to take a spoonful of broth in between bites of meat or bibimbap. After a while of eating the slightly spicy mixed barley rice, the hot doenjang jjigae broth felt like a perfect reset!

How was Heukmaneul Boribap as a family lunch with parents?
Rather than just jeyuk and bossam alone, having the namul, ssam vegetables, barley rice, and doenjang jjigae all come together made for a much more complete meal. Traveling with parents, it's often hard to cater to just one person's favorite dish.

At Heukmaneul Boribap, someone who loves namul can go for the barley rice, someone who loves meat has jeyuk and bossam, and someone who loves soup has the doenjang jjigae — everyone gets a bit of everything, which worked really well as a family meal!
