Korean restaurant near Daepo Jusangjeolli, Seogwipo: mackerel ssam-bap

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant specialising in mackerel and tilefish, set in a 3,500-pyeong garden on Ilju-seoro in Seogwipo, Jeju. Stopping in as a late breakfast before the Daepo Jusangjeolli cliffs, the writer ordered the aged kimchi braised mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice set (18,000 won per person) and went back for seconds at the self-serve bar of free abalone porridge, farm-grown ssam greens and black pork stir-fry. With pink roses in full bloom in early September, breakfast at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap felt like a sightseeing stop in itself.

I was looking for somewhere good for breakfast-lunch around Seogwipo and ended up at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥). Whenever I travel Jeju, I always want at least one Korean restaurant on the list where I can eat a full, hearty meal without feeling weighed down. If you haven't tried a mackerel restaurant in Jeju yet, pay attention!

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is pretty famous as a Seogwipo restaurant, and after actually visiting I understood why it's known as a breakfast spot in Seogwipo. From the garden outside to the food itself, it was satisfying all around — here's my honest review.

Where is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, and what are its hours and parking?

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is located at 1240 Ilju-seoro, 1st floor, Seogwipo-si, Jeju, and it's open daily from 09:30 to 20:00 (last order 19:00). It's near the Jungmun tourist complex, so getting there by car is really convenient.

It's only about 5 to 10 minutes by car from major Seogwipo attractions like Daepo Jusangjeolli (columnar joints), so it's a perfect stop for breakfast before starting your day.

We went right before visiting Daepo Jusangjeolli, and eating a hearty meal here before heading to see the cliffs was such a great route to take.

The restaurant itself is quite large and I was surprised by how huge the parking lot was — there's a massive dedicated lot right next to the building.

It's big enough for dozens of large buses or cars to park comfortably, so even people who aren't confident drivers or who are using a rental car can park without any worry and just walk right in.

This restaurant is famous for Seogwipo mackerel and tilefish, and it even has an annex building! Personally, my rule of thumb for judging good restaurants in Jeju is whether they have an annex beyond the main building, haha.

If you're traveling with family, I'd especially recommend this as a dog-friendly restaurant in Jeju.

The 3,500-pyeong garden: pink roses in full bloom in early September

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has a massive garden of about 3,500 pyeong on its grounds. The moment I walked up, the exterior was so pretty my jaw dropped — I have to show it off.

This is actually the restaurant — I kept asking my husband to take more photos of it.

Right in front of the building it's all beautifully decorated like this,

When we visited in early September, the pink roses were in full bloom and I was completely blown away. Beyond the roses, there were all kinds of pretty flowers I couldn't even name, so walking a loop around the garden before eating was really lovely.

Flower-lined entrance path at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

This is the path leading into the restaurant — amazing, right? I grow a few plants at home myself, so I know how much work flowers and trees take. From watering to weeding to pruning, you need to be really diligent to keep landscaping like this — I genuinely wonder how the owner manages it.

It felt less like a restaurant and more like an arboretum. Apparently pink muhly grass starts blooming from September too, so if you love flower photos, it might be worth a visit for the perfect shot.

Missing the pink muhly is genuinely a tear-inducing point for me — I love muhly grass, T_T.

The flowers along the path in were so pretty, but I was hungry so I told myself let's eat first, photos later — went back out after the meal and had my husband take pictures, haha.

The flowers are gorgeous. I've taken so many photos around Jeju, and even though this is a restaurant, it's basically a tourist photo spot.

Menu, prices and what the dining room is like

Spacious dining hall interior with garden view through floor-to-ceiling windows

Walking inside, an open, spacious hall greeted us.

Since the outside is pretty, of course the view from inside is pretty too — through the floor-to-ceiling windows the garden we'd just seen filled the view, so there was no cramped feeling at all,

and the wood-toned tables were kept clean and well-maintained. The spacing between tables was generous too, so it felt comfortable for families or groups. Signatures from famous celebrities covered the walls, and a tablet showed clips of the restaurant on TV, which built up my anticipation while waiting for the food. Ordering is done conveniently through the tablet at each table.

We ordered the restaurant's signature old kimchi braised mackerel + abalone hot-pot rice set. Note that the boneless flower mackerel stew is only sold for 30 servings a day, so if you visit past lunchtime, there's a good chance it'll be sold out.

Here are the signature menu items for reference!

  • Old kimchi braised mackerel + abalone hot-pot rice (per person): ₩18,000 (minimum 2 orders)
  • Grilled fatty mackerel + abalone hot-pot rice: ₩18,000
  • Grilled tilefish + abalone hot-pot rice: ₩30,000
  • Black pork hand-cut cutlet: ₩15,000
  • Grilled abalone (4 pieces): ₩15,000
Overview of the self-serve bar at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

What's on the self-serve bar: abalone porridge, ssam greens, black pork stir-fry

The self-serve bar at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap includes complimentary abalone porridge, farm-grown ssam (wrap) vegetables, black pork stir-fry and japchae, over ten side dishes, and homemade sikhye (sweet rice drink). After ordering, I went over to the self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant, and the spread genuinely surprised me.

The self-serve bar here is on a completely different level from what you'd normally picture — there's clearly a reason this bar is famous.

First, the fact that you can help yourself to as much complimentary abalone porridge as you want was such a nice touch. It's rich and savory with the right amount of abalone innards mixed in, and it was perfect for warming up your stomach before the main dish. There's no better treat for people coming for breakfast. This was so good — eat plenty of it.

Second is the freshness of the ssam vegetables. The quality of the wraps was ridiculous — apparently the vegetables are grown on their own farm, and instead of the wilted lettuce or perilla leaves you get from a supermarket, the leaves were sturdy and clean, as if freshly picked from the field.

Vegetable prices are so high these days, but these were so well maintained that I ate them freely without worry. Places often charge ₩7,000-8,000 just for a ssam vegetable side, so getting to eat this quality of farm-grown vegetables freely was fantastic.

Third, I was surprised to find black pork stir-fry and japchae laid out on the self-serve bar so you could really enjoy the ssam properly. Does this even make sense — the pork stir-fry was amazing. This is a mackerel place, and yet you can help yourself unlimited amounts of pork stir-fry too — the value felt incredible.

And the japchae here is also great, so eat up. While I was there, staff kept managing the self-serve bar continuously — I watched them wipe and refill it in real time, which put my mind at ease about hygiene.

Japchae and side dishes at the self-serve bar

On top of that, there were over ten side dishes — from seasoned greens to pickles to salads — so the table was already full before the main dish even arrived. This place is amazing for side dishes.

There's even homemade sikhye ready, so have a bowl after your meal.

How were the aged kimchi braised mackerel and abalone hot-pot rice?

Old kimchi braised mackerel set on the burner

Finally, the main dish — old kimchi braised mackerel — was set on the burner. It came out in a large earthenware pot with a whole well-fermented head of old kimchi laid on top, and the moment it arrived, the spicy-tangy seasoning smell hit us and made my mouth water.

They pulled the old kimchi up with tongs and cut it into bite-size pieces with scissors right there. Digging underneath, there were generous, thick chunks of plump mackerel.

The flesh was insanely thick and the mackerel chunks were huge — exactly as the photo shows. Fish can easily turn fishy if you're not careful, but there wasn't a hint of fishy taste — even the inner flesh was tender and moist,

A large chunk of mackerel underneath the old kimchi

look at how the mackerel chunk is as big as the kimchi piece. The seasoning wasn't just aggressively spicy — the deep tanginess of the old kimchi and the sharp seasoning had soaked well into the mackerel flesh, making it a perfect side for rice.

It was packed with flesh, and having no bones was so, so, so nice — boneless really is the best. I don't like overly intense flavors, but this was healthy and lightly savory, which I loved.

The rice wasn't just a regular bowl either — it came as abalone hot-pot rice, which made the whole set feel much higher quality.

Lifting the lid, the fluffy rice was topped generously with sliced abalone, tot (seaweed fusiforme), and sweet pumpkin.

I love both abalone and tot, and it was full of exactly what I love — such a happy surprise. After scooping the rice out into a bowl, they poured hot water into the pot to make a scorched-rice water (nurungji).

I put a spoonful of the freshly made abalone rice on a fresh perilla leaf and cabbage leaf from the self-serve bar, added a thick piece of mackerel, well-cooked old kimchi, and even some pork stir-fry from the self-serve bar, and wrapped it all up into one big bite.

But seriously, look at the thickness of that flesh, isn't it amazing? It had been a while since I ate braised fish wrapped in a ssam, and the crunch of the vegetables, the clean taste of the mackerel, and the savoriness of the pork stir-fry came together beautifully.

Being able to enjoy pork stir-fry and braised mackerel to my heart's content at the same time made the whole meal incredibly satisfying. At the end, they finished it off with the savory scorched-rice water made in the hot pot. The saltiness of the old kimchi seasoning was washed away nicely by the nurungji broth, leaving my stomach warm and settled.

Finishing with a cup of the homemade sikhye from the self-serve bar made it a truly perfect meal. After eating it myself, I completely understood why so many people visiting Seogwipo, Jeju come here for breakfast.

Closing photo after finishing the meal at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

From the spacious garden scenery to the generous self-serve bar to the clean, non-fishy old kimchi braised mackerel, this place would be more than suitable to bring your parents or kids to. And since it's dog-friendly too, if you're planning a Jeju trip with your dog, keep this one in mind!
