Seongsan restaurant after snorkeling: grilled tilefish, Jejurowoon

In short

Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon Seongsan Ilchulbong Branch is a braised hairtail and grilled tilefish set-meal restaurant a 7-minute drive from Seongsan Ilchulbong in Seogwipo, Jeju. After snorkeling with our child at Sumapo Beach, we ordered the A set (24,000 won per person) and added two more grilled tilefish at 8,000 won each because our child finished the first one in minutes. Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon suits family travelers who want a warm home-style meal after a day in the water.

If I had to pick the most memorable moment of this Jeju trip, it's easily the time we spent snorkeling with our kid at 'Sumapo Beach,' right below Seongsan Ilchulbong. After playing in the clear Jeju waters, our stomachs were growling loudly. Right after swimming, we were craving a proper, warm 'home-cooked meal.'

That's how we found the place I'm introducing today: Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon.

Where is Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon, and what are its hours?

Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon is located just 7 minutes by car from Seongsan Ilchulbong, making it a perfect route for people like us who'd spent the day near the peak and were heading onward. It's also near the entrance to Aqua Planet and Seopjikoji, so it's a great spot to fit into your sightseeing schedule before or after a meal.

When we walked in, every table was packed with families. 'Ah, this is a real family dining spot trusted by both locals and travelers,' I thought, and my confidence in the place shot up before I'd even taken a bite.

What comes with the 24,000 won A set at Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon?

At Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon, we ordered the A set (₩24,000 per person), which lets you try braised hairtail along with a variety of side dishes all at once.

The A set comes with [braised hairtail + grilled tilefish + sticky pot rice + soy sauce crab + seafood stew (or sea urchin seaweed soup, choose one)] — the sheer abundance felt like they'd put the entire Jeju sea on the table.

Braised hairtail from Seongsan Port, delivered every morning

The braised hairtail (galchi-jorim) at Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon apparently uses only fresh hairtail caught that very morning at Seongsan Port.

Braised hairtail is usually so intensely seasoned or salty that you're left thirsty afterward, but here the seasoning was just right — not too strong — so it was great even without rice.

The sauce was so good we scraped the broth clean to the last drop. The thoroughly cooked radish, an essential part of any braised hairtail, had soaked up the sauce beautifully and melted in the mouth.

Seafood hot pot: a clean soybean-paste broth that is not salty

We debated between the seafood stew and the sea urchin seaweed soup and went with the 'seafood stew.' Excellent choice! Instead of a spicy red-pepper broth, it was based on savory soybean paste, which soothed our stomachs after being chilled from snorkeling. It wasn't salty at all and was packed with fresh seafood, giving the broth a depth all its own.

Soy sauce marinated crab good enough for its own restaurant

The soy sauce crab (ganjang gejang) was seriously something else. The meat was packed full, and the umami exploded with every bite — quality on par with dedicated soy crab specialty restaurants. Sweet and salty at once, it alone could finish off a whole bowl of rice.

Glossy sticky pot rice and the scorched rice that follows

The finishing touch to a proper Jeju home-style meal is, of course, the rice! The sticky, chewy pot rice elevated the flavor of every side dish. And the scorched rice (nurungji), made by pouring hot water over the leftover rice at the bottom of the pot, was the perfect way to close out the meal.

The grilled tilefish our child ate twice over (and how we ordered extra)

Honestly, the biggest surprise of this meal was the grilled tilefish (okdom-gui). Fresh tilefish grilled almost like it was fried — crispy outside, moist inside — with unreal nuttiness. It was already part of the A set, and the moment it hit the table, our notoriously picky-eater kid demolished a full 2 fish in what felt like seconds. Since our kid loved it so much, we felt like we were missing out and ordered 2 more grilled tilefish (₩8,000 each). The freshly grilled batch was just as crispy, clean, and nutty as before.

The funny (and slightly sad) part: our kid ate almost all of the plump body meat from the 2 extra fish too, leaving mom and dad to just barely taste the crispy heads and tails...

Hallabong jelly from the receipt review event

After finishing a delicious and filling meal, we joined the receipt review event and got ourselves some sweet 'hallabong jelly.' It was the perfect little dessert to cleanse the palate. The owner was generous and the staff were kind, so the whole meal left us in a great mood.
