Daegu Korean restaurant for a school-break family lunch: Geumdeungeo

In short

Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is a wood-fired mackerel restaurant on the hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) street of Deulan-ro in Suseong-gu, Daegu. Three generations — a mother, her son on school break, and his grandmother — had a weekday lunch of wood-fired mackerel for three (19,000 won) and cockle salad, plus siraegi doenjang guk (dried radish green soup) and a self-serve banchan bar. With private rooms and a parking tower, Geumdeungeo suited a family outing or a group gathering.

Full table spread with wood-fired mackerel at Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch

On a day when I wanted to have lunch with my son, who's on school break, my mother turned out to be free too, so the three of us went out for a good meal. We headed to Geumdeungeo Main Branch, well known as a go-to spot on Daegu's Deulanguil restaurant street. It's a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) style place where grilled mackerel comes with a full spread of side dishes, so I figured it would work for both kids and adults.

In person, the atmosphere was clean and tidy, and there were even private rooms, so it seemed great not just for a family meal but for group gatherings too. Here's my honest review of a meal that worked across generations :)

Where is Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch, and where do you park?

Exterior of the Geumdeungeo Main Branch building on the Deulanguil main road

Geumdeungeo Main Branch sits right on the main road of the Deulanguil restaurant street in Suseong-gu. It's also close to Suseong Lake, so it's easy to plan things before or after the meal. I got a little confused finding the parking entrance when I arrived, haha. Follow the arrow into the building's ground-floor pilotis.

When you're bringing parents along for a family meal or meeting a group of people, parking matters more than you'd think. There's a parking tower, and staff are on hand to guide you in. Park the car and head up to the second floor, and the restaurant is right there — a simple route. I thought this was one of the more convenient Deulanguil restaurants to visit by car.

Inside Geumdeungeo: atmosphere and private room seating

Front desk and award frame at the entrance of Geumdeungeo Main Branch

The first thing I noticed walking in was a framed award related to Korea's food service management and consumer-preferred brand awards. Oh, did I pick the right place? My expectations went up a notch, haha. Here you choose your menu at the front desk as you walk in and then get seated. It might help to decide what you want beforehand.

High ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows kept the space from feeling cramped, and overall it felt neat and well kept.

Private room-style group seating at Geumdeungeo Main Branch

Besides regular tables, there were private room-style seats too, which would work well for a parent's birthday, a family meal, or a company gathering. It also seemed like a good fit for anyone looking for a quiet place to talk over a meal.

Banchan and the self-serve corner — the top pick was siraegi doenjang guk

Hanjeongsik table set with japchae, green onion kimchi and other banchan

As the table setting began, the table filled up fast as side dishes landed one after another. This is what coming for hanjeongsik feels like! Japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), green onion kimchi, seasoned seaweed, seokbakji (radish kimchi), even doraji (bellflower root) and lotus root salad — more variety than I expected. It didn't feel like they were just padding the count; each one was fun to try.

Anything you run out of, you can freely refill at the self-serve corner.

Being able to go back for seconds of the ones you liked, guilt-free, is a plus too!

A bowl of savory siraegi doenjang guk

And my unexpected favorite was the siraegi doenjang guk (dried radish green soybean paste soup). One spoonful and the savory flavor really came through. Just salty enough with real depth — a spoon of rice, then a sip of soup, perfect combo. Even before the main dish arrived, I thought about packing this one to take home separately. Seeing even the basics done this well, I get why so many people look for this place as a Daegu Deulanguil favorite.

Wood-fired mackerel for three at 19,000 won — how did it taste?

What we ordered that day was the wood-fired mackerel for three at ₩19,000. If you want more fish only, you can add a single serving for ₩7,000. The golden-brown skin looked delicious just at a glance.

The name Geumdeungeo apparently comes from combining '금' (geum, from nuruk salt) with '고등어' (godeungeo, mackerel). It's cured in nuruk salt made with natural sun-dried salt from New Zealand's clean waters and rice, then grilled in a 450°C wood-fired oven.

Nuruk salt served alongside the wood-fired mackerel

I also tried a bit of the nuruk salt served alongside — surprisingly, it wasn't as strongly salty as I expected.

Now for the real thing. I lifted a piece of flesh off with my chopsticks and it glistened. One bite in, and 'crispy outside, tender inside' fit perfectly. Barely any of that fishy smell, just a deep, savory flavor coming through. A moment where I thought, glad I made the trip to this Daegu Deulanguil favorite.

Flesh pulled apart from the wood-fired mackerel

And the most excited person there was my son, who loves mackerel more than any other fish, haha. One bite in and he went, 'Mmm, this is good.' 'Mom, this place is really good.' Then he went full praise mode for Geumdeungeo Main Branch. In the end he cleared two bowls of rice and two pieces of fish.

Cockle salad and gim-ssam (seaweed wraps) ordered alongside

Spicy seasoned cockle salad

The cockle salad we ordered alongside turned out to be a great pick too. The sauce was spicy with real umami and paired so well with plain rice.

A bite of rice topped with cockle salad

It's tasty on its own, but put a bit on rice and take a bite and your appetite comes roaring back. Roasted gim (seaweed) came alongside too, so I wrapped rice and cockles in it for a bite. 💜💚🩷

I think this kind of spread is exactly why Geumdeungeo Main Branch comes up so often as a place to bring parents for a family meal. With something for both kids and adults, there's less of that awkward back-and-forth when a group is deciding what to order.

Dessert at Geumdeungeo: coffee and apricot juice

Dessert corner with coffee and apricot juice

After eating our fill, dessert had to happen too. After the meal, coffee and apricot juice were available. The coffee uses Starbucks beans and comes iced or hot. Adults with a coffee, kids with apricot juice — perfect way to wrap up.

Not having to go find a café after the meal and just having a simple drink and rest right there was convenient. Especially on a day when a group gathers, it's nice to have a bit of time to chat before everyone splits up.

Final verdict — a Deulanguil Korean set meal that worked for three generations

Finished hanjeongsik table at Geumdeungeo Main Branch after the meal

A lunch trip to Geumdeungeo Main Branch with my son on school break and my mother. A Daegu Deulanguil hanjeongsik favorite I'd want to return to, since it worked well across generations. The interior is spacious with private rooms, making it a good option to keep in mind for a family meal or group gathering. Between the tasty grilled fish, the generous banchan, and the tidy atmosphere, I came home from a satisfying meal :)
