Gangnam Japanese restaurant for sirloin gyukatsu double: Ichigyu

In short

Ichigyu Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, where diners grill sirloin gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) over individual tabletop grills. I ordered the gyukatsu double with mini curry and mixed and matched butter, sauces, wasabi, and grillable cheese. Verdict: a lovely place for two people to talk over a slow meal.

Gyukatsu visit at Ichigyu Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch

The day I had sirloin gyukatsu double in Sinnonhyeon

I’d been craving meat lately, and the thought of gyukatsu with a crisp exterior and juicy center came to mind, so I visited Ichigyu Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch. This time, I ordered the gyukatsu double and added mini curry, too! It was fun grilling as much as I wanted myself, making it a nice date-menu option in Sinnonhyeon.

Introduction to a gyukatsu meal in Sinnonhyeon

It is a three-minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinnonhyeon Station, which was nice and convenient.

A relaxed setting that does not feel awkward for solo dining

The restaurant had a clean, cozy atmosphere that brought Japanese restaurants to mind. The tables were spaced nicely, and the layout did not feel uncomfortable for eating alone, so it also seemed like a good choice for anyone looking for a solo-dining spot in Sinnonhyeon.

Ordering gyukatsu double and mini curry

Ichigyu’s menu had a variety of options centered on gyukatsu, including steki, hamburger omurice, and curry. You can choose between a single and double gyukatsu, and I went for the double because I wanted a hearty meal. There were also Japanese-style dishes such as karaage and fried shrimp. The brief explanations of the cuts were fun, too.

They were also running a receipt-review event when I visited. I participated and received thin-sliced mochi and grillable cheese on the house. Definitely join in! The rice arrived first, and I liked that it was served in a way that made it easy to share.

Gyukatsu cooked one piece at a time over the grill

After a short wait, the whole table was filled with a generous spread. The gyukatsu I ordered uses sirloin, and perhaps because it was the double, the portion was generous enough to fill the plate.

Most of all, the color of the cross-section was so pretty when it first arrived. It had a thin, crispy coating on the outside and a rosy interior, and you cook it to your liking on the brazier set at the table.

Cross-section of gyukatsu grilled on a brazier

At Ichigyu, butter for the brazier comes as standard. Melt the butter on the grill first and place the gyukatsu on top, and that rich, nutty aroma rises right up—what more can I say? The best!!!

Brazier melting butter for grilling gyukatsu

Because each person has their own brazier, rather than putting everything on at once, you can cook one or two pieces at a time to your preferred doneness. Watching it sizzle made even the waiting fun. If you are looking for gyukatsu in Sinnonhyeon, you cannot leave out the fun of grilling it yourself like this!

The meat itself was thick and tender, with the rich flavor characteristic of sirloin. I liked it best cooked to a moderate doneness rather than too well done.

Changing things up with sauces and curry

It was delicious on its own, but I could try each piece differently with gyukatsu sauce, chili sauce, and wasabi. Dipping it in sauce or adding a little wasabi kept it clean and not too rich, so even the double did not become tiring. I also gave the gyukatsu a good dunk in the curry, and that was a special treat, too!

After grilling the cheese until golden on both sides and placing it over the gyukatsu, it added a rich nuttiness for a different combination.

A Sinnonhyeon date meal for talking slowly over dinner

The gyukatsu itself was good quality, but I especially liked being able to grill each piece myself and combine it however I wanted, from sauces and wasabi to curry and cheese. That is why I would recommend it as a Sinnonhyeon date spot where two people can talk while eating slowly. Thick sirloin gyukatsu, an individual brazier, and butter included as standard! It worked well for a satisfying solo meal and for a date when you want something a little special. That was my honest review of Ichigyu Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Branch, a gyukatsu restaurant in Gangnam.
