Cold noodle restaurant in Suyu with baby chairs: Iseol Myeonok

Hi, how's it going :) I went for a walk near the fresh-air 4.19 Tower and found a really tasty Hamhung-style naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant nearby, so I paid it a visit — 'Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch' 🙂 Here you can enjoy refreshing naengmyeon along with old-style bulgogi, wang galbitang (short rib soup), wang galbi-jjim (braised short ribs) and more, all clean and light in flavor — no wonder it's popular with regulars! Let me tell you all about my visit :)

The storefront and the private parking lot

Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch sits close to the 4.19 Democracy Cemetery. It occupies its own building, with a clean overall look. There's parking space both in front and behind the store, so it's easy to visit by car.

Right behind the building is Iseol Myeonok's own private parking lot, and it's really spacious, so parking was super easy 👍 It seemed like it would be especially great on busy weekends.

Inside Iseol Myeonok: baby chairs and second-floor seating

This is the first floor of Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch. Once inside, it was more spacious than I expected.

There are plenty of tables, and the overall bright, clean atmosphere seemed great for a family meal or dining with a larger group 👍

On the wall hung photos of Master Chef Lee Chun-geun and shots from TV appearances. (Classic sign of a good restaurant.)

The ceilings were high, and there was a big window in the back, so it felt open and pleasant rather than cramped 🙂

Water is self-serve, so you just grab it from here,

and there are baby chairs like this too, so it's fine to bring your little one! (My baby's pose was extremely cocky 😎)

This is the staircase up to the second floor — there were tons of celebrity autographs and awards. Very fitting for a place with 20 years of history 👍

I went up to the second floor and it was also quite large, with roomy tables. They said this floor opens too when it gets busy, like on weekends. Seemed great for families to visit.

Iseol Myeonok menu and how to order from the table tablet

From naengmyeon, the restaurant's main dish, to galbitang, mandu, and bulgogi, there's a wide range of options. It's nice to have all these choices in case naengmyeon alone isn't enough. We ordered two servings of Seoul old-style bulgogi, one mul naengmyeon, and a half plate of wang mandu.

Warm broth and the side dishes

First they bring out a warm broth. Honestly, I go to naengmyeon restaurants for this haha. People usually say it's just water with seasoning powder dissolved in it, but this one tasted like real stock! The subtle umami was really nice.

Here are the basic banchan (side dishes). Japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), skate salad, corn salad, cabbage salad, pickled onion, kimchi, and mukbap (acorn jelly in broth) came out. Quite a lot of variety and generous portions for just the basic side dishes. Overall the seasoning was well-balanced and satisfying 👍

What does Seoul old-style bulgogi for two taste like?

This is the main dish, Seoul old-style bulgogi for two. Bulgogi and glass noodles sit on a bed of seasoning, topped generously with bean sprouts, scallions, and mushrooms. (I love a lot of vegetables 💛)

We patiently waited for it to come to a boil. Once the vegetables wilted a bit, we stirred the meat around too.

All done~ There's really a lot of meat, right? The combination of vegetables soaked in the broth and the meat was so good.

Bulgogi is usually super sweet and salty, right? But Iseol Myeonok's bulgogi is soft and mildly seasoned, so it was easy to eat without feeling overwhelming. Especially the kind of healthy flavor older folks would love!

Mul naengmyeon: why even the noodles arrive ice-cold

Next is the mul naengmyeon. Cool, slushy broth with noodles, cucumber, meat, and egg garnish. (The textbook version of naengmyeon!)

First I snip it with scissors. Loosen the noodles quickly and it's ready~

There was a lot of noodles, and more than anything, it wasn't just the broth that was cold — the noodles themselves were freezing?! It was great being able to eat it refreshingly cold all the way to the end.

I like thin noodles like this, and Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch's naengmyeon noodles were exactly that! Chewy yet firm, quite different from regular noodles. The cold broth also had great umami, and it didn't feel artificial at all. It was so delicious I'm now curious about the bibim (spicy mixed) version too. Next time I'll definitely order bibim naengmyeon!

Wang mandu: is a half plate enough?

Last up, wang mandu (large dumplings). Naengmyeon and meat is a great combo, but naengmyeon and mandu is also a wonderful pairing, right?! We ordered a half plate, and each dumpling was really big.

Cutting it in half, the filling was packed full, and biting into it, the texture of vegetables and meat together was so nice. The flavor wasn't too strong either, so it paired perfectly with the naengmyeon! I'd have been sad if we hadn't ordered it 🥹
