Gonderle egg rice bowl set for haejangguk in Gimhae: Ppyeodae Itneun

These days the mornings and evenings are getting cooler, so I keep craving warm soup dishes. You know those days when you want rice and soup, but also want to eat a bit of everything, including meat? This place was exactly right for one of those days!

I was looking for good restaurants in Gimhae's Yulha area and found a place where you can enjoy haejangguk (hangover soup) along with several other menu items together. I've always liked haejangguk anyway, so this Gimhae favorite — Ppyeodae Itneun Haejangguk Gamjatang — Yulha branch, was where I ended up.

What was the atmosphere like?

The first thing I noticed walking in was how clean and comfortable the atmosphere was, much more than I expected. When you think 'haejangguk restaurant,' you might picture somewhere a bit rough and cluttered, but this place was easy to relax and eat in.

The tables were neatly set up, so it seemed like a good spot for a family meal, and also a low-pressure place to grab a casual meal with friends or acquaintances.

Here's the menu board for reference. Haejangguk, grilled bones, gamjatang, and more! We ordered the 'Daega Hansang' set, available from 2 people, which comes with haejangguk, sliced boiled pork, and spicy seasoned crab, and swapped the rice for 'gonderle egg hotpot rice.'

It was great to have sliced boiled pork alongside everything else. It had plenty of collagen, chewy yet tender, and easy to pick up piece by piece, so alternating it with the haejangguk was delicious. Hot soup, a piece of pork, and rice together made for a really filling, satisfying meal.

Spicy seasoned crab

And then the spicy seasoned crab I'd been waiting for! It felt a little unusual to be able to have seasoned crab at a haejangguk restaurant.

Picking up a piece and trying it, the spicy-sweet seasoning really woke up my appetite. It paired especially well with rice. Being able to have haejangguk, meat, and spicy seasoned crab all at once was great.

Haejangguk

First I tried the haejangguk broth. Seeing it served piping hot in a stone bowl, I thought — this is exactly the kind of dish soup food is meant to be. Taking a careful first spoonful, the clean, hearty flavor was really nice. Eaten with rice, it left my stomach feeling comfortably full. A spoonful of haejangguk, then a spoonful of hotpot rice, then a piece of pork, then some spicy seasoned crab — before I knew it, the rice was disappearing fast.

The gonderle egg hotpot rice! The savory aroma of freshly cooked hotpot rice combined with the subtle fragrance of gonderle (mountain thistle greens), plus egg mixed in for a nutty flavor — it was great. Scooping up a spoonful of rice with the gonderle, seasoning, and egg all mixed together, and eating it with either the haejangguk or the spicy seasoned crab, was really delicious.

After the meal, and a few things worth knowing

After eating, I had a cold slushie for dessert.
