Pork skin and mul-naengmyeon at Suwon Station BBQ spot Ssosam 208

In short

Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch is a stone-grill pork belly restaurant on Deogyeong-daero 895beon-gil near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Back from a trip to Da Nang and craving pork belly and cold noodles, the writer ordered samgyeopsal (pork belly), cheongyeopsal (layered pork), pork skin and mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup), and a staff member grilled everything from the kimchi to the meat on the stone plate. The cheongyeopsal was chewy enough to warrant an extra serving, and with seating for 2 to 78 people, Ssosam 208 also works for group dinners.

After getting back from a trip to Da Nang, I was craving pork belly and naengmyeon (cold noodles) so badly. Using the excuse that my daughter Tissue's toy tissue box was falling apart, I was heading to Starfield Suwon with her and her dad, but on the way I remembered a pork belly place near Suwon Station that I'd had a really good company dinner at before — Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch — so we stopped by. (Tissue waited in the car with Tesla's pet mode on!)

Ssosam 208 menu and what we ordered that night

Menu board at Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch

From good-value mixed stone-grill sets for people who want to try several cuts, to single-cut orders for people who already know exactly what they want (that's me), plus a range of side dishes — the menu felt pretty extensive for a Suwon Station spot. Since I firmly believe meat without fat isn't really meat,

  • Samgyeopsal (pork belly) 1 serving
  • Cheongyeopsal 1 serving
  • Mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) x1
  • Non-alcoholic beer x1
  • Milkis x1
  • Added later: cheongyeopsal 1 serving, pork skin 1 serving

That's what we ordered!

We had booked through Naver Reservation, so we went in and sat down at a table that was already set.

We started picking at the various side dishes before the meal even began. A pork place that serves rice noodles as a basic side dish?! ❤

Around the time all the side dishes came out,

a staff member started by putting kimchi on the stone plate to grill,

and yep, we started getting into the mood too haha. Drinking non-alcoholic beer with meat as our very first meal in broad daylight — now that's what a true adult does, ha.

Samgyeopsal and cheongyeopsal grilled for you on the stone plate

At Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch, the staff grill the meat directly on the stone plate for you, so all we had to do was sit comfortably and wait,

like this~ oh, that's an old reference now 🎹🎤🔊⭐🎵 haha, sorry, guess I'm showing my age, ha. Anyway — the samgyeopsal was on the thinner side, so grilling it crisp on the stone plate gave it that nostalgic flavor of pork belly grilled in the backyard when I was a kid,

Chewy grilled cheongyeopsal

and the cheongyeopsal I love felt like something between hangjeongsal (pork neck) and pork belly. Chewy and springy with a nutty meat flavor — it was so, so, so good.

An extra serving of cheongyeopsal

So we ordered one more serving, hehe.

Pork skin grilling on the stone plate

If a pork place serves pork skin, we're getting it, no question. Grilling the skin on the stone plate gave it that signature chewiness plus something moist and soft at the same time...

Pork skin dipped in bean flour

Personally I just dip the skin straight into the bean flour, and it ends up feeling like eating a really tasty dessert — I enjoyed it a lot.

Mul-naengmyeon after a week of pho in Da Nang

After eating nothing but pho in Da Nang, I was dying for cool mul-naengmyeon 💚 A cold, refreshing broth and chewy noodles — that alone is the standard, but I was just craving naengmyeon in general, so thank you for saving me.
