Gung-dong Western eatery, Daejeon: shrimp pasta, pizza at Ciment

In short

Ciment Chungnam National University Branch is a budget-friendly Western restaurant with a concrete-toned interior, set on the main alley of the Gung-dong university district in Yuseong, Daejeon. Two of us shared Toowoomba shrimp pasta (12,000 won), a half-and-half pizza in potato and American cheese (14,000 won) and a salad (3,500 won), and the pasta's five shrimp were just right for two people. Dipping the thin-crust half-and-half pizza into the pasta sauce is the winning order at Ciment.

If you're looking for a good-vibes, budget-friendly Western restaurant in the Gung-dong university district of Yuseong, Daejeon, one place always comes to mind: Ciment. It's just as good for a group hangout as for a date, so I went back to enjoy some pasta and pizza. Here's my honest, hands-on visit record.

Where is Ciment Chungnam National University Branch, and what are its hours and parking?

Ciment Chungnam National University Branch sits on the 1st floor of 131 Daehak-ro, right on the main street of the Gung-dong university district. It's open daily from 11:00 to 21:00, last order at 20:30, and never closes.

Since it's on a back-alley commercial strip, there's no dedicated parking lot. You'll need to use the nearby Gung-dong public parking lot or park on a side street. If you're coming by public transit, it's an easy walk from either the main gate of Chungnam National University or Yurim Park.

Ciment's concrete-toned interior and seating

Walking in, the first thing that caught my eye was the hip, modern concrete-style interior — very on-brand for a place called 'Ciment.' Heavy gray tones meet warm lighting for a nice balance.

Seating ranges from tables for two up to tables for four, all with generous spacing so it never feels cramped — good for couples on a date or groups of college friends alike. It can get busy during lunch and dinner peak hours, so I'd recommend arriving a bit early.

There's a restroom right inside the restaurant, which was really convenient since we didn't have to hunt for one outside. It's unisex, but it was kept very clean and pleasant to use before and after our meal.

What made this place feel even more special was learning that it takes part in a 'Good Influence Store' program supporting children who lack regular meals — offering warm free meals to kids in need. Knowing that made the food taste even better, on top of the great value and the owner's warm heart.

What's on the self-bar at Ciment?

Self-bar stocked with pickles and sauces

Once you've ordered, there's a self-bar set up on one side of the restaurant. It's stocked neatly with pickles, hot sauce, parmesan cheese powder, Tabasco, tissues and wet wipes. The crunchy, tangy house-made pickles cut through the richness of the Western food perfectly, and you could help yourself to as much as you wanted.

Toowoomba shrimp pasta, 12,000 won 🦐

This is the must-order signature dish at Ciment. The thick, rich cream sauce has just the right amount of spicy savoriness, so it never feels greasy.

It was loaded with plump, springy shrimp, which gave a great texture alongside the noodles. The sauce coated the pasta so well that every last bite was satisfying. There were five shrimp total — just right for two people to share.

Two flavors in one: potato and American cheese half-and-half pizza 🍕

A thin, crispy crust lets you enjoy two flavors at once, making this pizza feel like great value. The crust isn't thick, so the outside was crispy while the inside stayed moist — good all the way to the edge.

It was generously topped with cheese for a deep, savory flavor, and adding hot sauce or parmesan powder from the self-bar to taste brought out even more flavor. I'd also strongly recommend dipping the pizza crust into the Toowoomba pasta sauce!

We went with 1) potato and 2) American cheese. Personally, the potato pizza was really delicious.

✨ What I liked best about Ciment

Haha, since the pizza crust is a thin, crispy type, there was no need to struggle with a knife or scissors. You could just cut along the pre-scored lines or rub it with the included pizza scraper-spoon(?) thing and it sliced cleanly — I loved that.

Final verdict on Ciment in Gung-dong, Daejeon

Gung-dong's Ciment is a go-to spot for solid Western food at a reasonable price in the neighborhood. Between the hip, stylish interior, the well-organized self-bar, and even a small review event perk, the whole experience was satisfying.

If you're after a rich, spicy pasta or want to try a variety of pizzas in one sitting, Ciment is a safe bet for a great meal!
